The debut novel from British author Bruno Cooke. It is a book which deals with many of the struggles of youth: loneliness, shame, growing pains, diarrhoea. It is also about the things which bring us together as adults, and tear us apart. Love, heat, passion. Addiction and self-loathing. Masturbation. A son runs away and a father disappears, leaving mother and sister screaming at each other in an amphitheatre.
Dotted with fairytale elements and dollops of lewd British humour, this book will remind you of the importance of family, belly laughs and, ultimately, love.
Cover artwork by Finnegan Travers.
The purpose of this Kickstarter is to fund a print-run of the novel in the UK (in May/June), and here in Sri Lanka (in May), and make an audiobook. Amazon orders will be printed to order, but it is more cost effective to print in batches. Physical copies will also be useful when approaching brick-and-mortar shops. It will cost approximately £400 to have 120 copies printed and delivered in the UK. Add to this the cost of promotion, and a lesser run in Sri Lanka, and you arrive at my goal of £750.
If I have any spare, and/or make more than my target, I can get on with the next exciting thing: the audiobook! I would like to make a high sound quality recording of Reveries as an audiobook, employing multiple voice actors. I would like to pay those voice actors for their work. This, like the cover artwork collaboration, would generate professional portfolio work for emerging artists, and a well made product for consumers.
From the book:
Sod’s law takes no prisoners. Their love organs thwack into action. They are hopeless, rendered subordinate to the whims of fancy. Turbulence and extravagance, ecstasy and fantasy, drunken feuds and bloodied knuckles – these are the things they enjoy watching on television. They love, they fuck, they do it all and with each other. They sleep nose to nose or brow to brow, depending on the day of the week. They are organised in their love. Regular passion is not enough.
Richard is a victim of tempestuous bowels, Nicole of delayed tooth eruption. After fractious and bizarre childhoods, they meet and engage in a fractious and bizarre relationship. It ends and they lead separate lives, hers fractious, his bizarre. Unknown to Richard, Nicole gives birth to twins. Boy, girl; deluded, difficult. Boy runs away, girl is a maladaptive daydreamer. An all-consuming addiction to tantric self-pleasure means that Richard, too, is miles away, in a world of his own. It falls to a private detective with questionable morals, Ronald, to pick up the pieces.
5 artists have collaborated with the author to each create a unique cover artwork for Reveries. Ranging in styles from monochrome sketchpad to digital design, from the bold to the enigmatic, these bespoke artworks are one of a kind. While these will be released digitally as promotional material for the book, they will also be available as rewards on this page. By selecting X and requesting a specific artwork, you will be on the road to receiving your very own high quality poster of your favourite design, with a personalised message from the author!

Visit www.brunocooke.co.uk/reveries to view all five images as well as the textile designs.
As a sponsor of the project you will receive one or more copies from this novel's first print-run. Pledging at a level that gets you extras will give you. . . extras! Like one of these hand-embroidered t-shirts, pictured below. It also makes a) you a supporter of an independent artist and either 2) a great gift-giver for someone who likes bespoke garments/artwork, or 3) the proud possessor of the aforementioned.
Check out these designs!
The book will be classic novel size, i.e. 203 x 127 mm. Colour front cover, text inside, basically all the things you can expect from a novel. Note: specs may be slightly different for the Sri Lankan run.
The t-shirts depend on the availability of plain t-shirts locally. Request a size, a colour and an design and we will do our best to find a perfect fit.
When will you receive your rewards? The book is written and will be published in ebook format on 29 March. I will organise the UK print-run remotely and have it quality-checked by someone in the UK whose judgement I trust. With regards to printing the book, there is still work to do: proofing, printing, binding, inspecting, packing, etcetera. I aim to wrap everything up and sent it off before April. Then, it depends on whether the sample copy is of a high enough standard.
I will organise the Sri Lankan run here, in person. Depending on the quality of this, I will either send these, signed, to donors, or wait until I am in the UK in July to sign and send Amazon-printed copies. Therefore, I conservatively promise July 2019 for delivery. Likewise for individual rewards - if I can get high enough quality poster prints done here, I will send them as soon as they are ready, otherwise expect delivery in July. T-shirts will be made to order here, so they should ship in May. I will post updates on this page.
Where to? Kickstarter will add the cost of shipping to your pledge based on where you live.
International shipping. Some countries apply customs duties. I cannot predict this, as they are arbitrary and willy-nilly. Sorry!
Pay attention. If you are an international sponsor and receive a tracking number when we ship, please track your package daily.
Questions? Ask me anything from here to the moon and I'll do my darnedest to provide an adequate answer. If I know the answer, I’ll add both question and answer to the FAQ section of this page.
That is all.
Thank you so much.
Risks and challenges
The rewards will be printed/produced to order. So, timeliness for the posters depends partly on the efficiency of local printers - see Schedule for more information on this. It will also depend on our personal availability: my textile artist Laura embroiders the t-shirts by hand, which is a time-consuming process. She is a full time teacher so it may take a couple of days to get designs into production. We are also out of the country for most of April, so nothing will be made during that period.
All in all, I will get rewards together, printed and/or produced and delivered as quickly as I can. But please do not expect an immediate turnaround. Thank you for understanding!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
