Boo hiss! Quality pork is outrageously expensive and extremely hard to come by.

But, the unbelievable taste and health benefits of bacon (and other unbelievable deliciousness) makes pork a must for the well fed family table.

The good news is that pork, AKA pigs before they are harvested, are surprisingly easy to raise

Despite popular rumors, you don’t need much space (think 240 square feet, minimum), pigs don’t stink (if managed right), they don’t make a lot of noise and they’ll convert ALL your food waste (banana peels, rotten milk, apple cores or whatever) into delicious bacon all while tilling your garden, clearing forest or turning compost.

Given the surprising ease and convenience of raising pigs, countless folks are walking away from the marketplace and taking control of their food story and raising their own pork.

ALL you have to do to grow your own is learn a few simple concepts and you're on your way to growing your own bacon, sausage, ham and head cheese (if you’re feeling oh so saucy ;)

Now, for the first time, a much needed “edutainal” (educational and entertaining)  film project that chronicles one family's two year adventure of getting starting with pigs AND an all inclusive course that will teach you how to raise your own pork from piglet to the plate…

 “Growing Bacon” - The Documentary

Laugh and Learn as you follow a Rhodes’ family adventure in this feature length documentary, “Growing Bacon” - One family’s adventures of growing their own pork

Follow along as the Rhodes’ set out on their first two years raising pigs. See how they went from pigs escaping and destroying their yard to using them to work their gardens, raise them as co workers with chickens, turn compost, clear forests and turn gobs of kitchen and farm “waste” into delicious dishes.

Once inspired by the Rhodes’ story in “Growing Bacon” you’ll undoubtedly want to do this yourself.

Whether you’re wanting to set up a micro farm in your back yard or clear acres of forest, I’ve condensed EVERYTHING I’ve learned from my experience and condensed it down into something you can finish with ease (in one evening).

And, where I lack knowledge and experience I’m visiting some of my pig expert friends, Joel Salatin, Cliff Davis and John Arbuckle (meet them below).

Meet Your Instructors:

Justin Rhodes of the Holler Farm in North Carolina

Your host, Justin Rhodes will bring you along on his family’s two year adventure raising pigs in the much anticipated “edutainal” documentary, “Growing Bacon”. Incidentally this is Justin’s third major film project following in the paths of “Permaculture Chickens” and “the Great American Farm Tour.”

Justin is a seasoned homesteader having enjoyed many years of practicing “beyond organic” and permaculture methods on our 75 acre family farm near Asheville NC.

Since 2016 Justin has published his daily homesteading adventures on his YouTube Channel totaling more than 1,000 videos.

In 2017 Justin and his family traveled all of American on “the Great American Farm Tour” learning from, and showcasing America’s greatest farms.

Joel Salatin at Polyface Farms, Virginia

We’ll be visiting Joel Salatin in June to learn his unique, but totally doable and highly profitable systems for raising pigs in the forest, and on compost.

Joel co-owns, with his family, Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia.  Featured in the New York Times bestseller Omnivore’s Dilemma and award-winning documentary Food Inc., the farm services more than 5,000 families, 50 restaurants, 10 retail outlets, and a farmers’ market with salad bar beef, pigaerator pork, pastured poultry, and forestry products.” - From Joel’s bio on Polyface Farms

Joel will show us first hand the basics of raising pigs for market while explaining how you can implement his system to create your own profitable pork operation.

Cliff Davis of Spiral Ridge Permaculture, Tennessee

You may remember Cliff Davis from Spiral Ridge Permaculture from our recent vlog, “Man Claims Pigs will Clear Forest, then Proves It”

He’s a well seasoned market farmer and permaculturalist in eastern Tennessee and his beautiful farm is proof that he knows what he’s doing. We’ve already shot his segment for the project on using pigs to clear forests to develop edible food forests.

Cliff will be sharing his decades of experience and knowledge with us while showcasing HOW to use pigs to turn wild forests into productive edible forest for pig and human :)

John Arbuckle of Roam Sticks, Maine

John is a fourth generation pig farmer raising his pigs successfully on pasture and forest.

He is the co founder of Roam Sticks, which is the first of it’s kind (non GMO) pork snack stick (similar to beef jerky, but with pork).

We’ll be looking to John for expert advice in growing forage for pigs, breeding, value adding your pork for market and learning how to manage your herd in such a way the pigs leave the pastures better than when they found them.

Al Lumnah of Lumnah Acres, New Hampshire

Al is an experienced homesteader documenting his adventures on his popular YouTube Channel, Lumnah Acres. Al will be creating two videos teaching from his vast experience on how he raises homestead hogs (in small spaces) and in an extremely cold climate (New Hampshire).
