The 5th Shadow is my first feature film and after eight years, it is almost complete. What we have accomplished to this point is amazing, especially when you consider how little money we have done it with. The film has been made with the extraordinary support of our wonderful executive producers and a very talented cast and crew. We are here to raise a little more money for post production costs from you guys so we can complete the film. If we don't raise 100% of the goal ($12,000) we don't get any of the money. Even if you can't support us financially we just ask you share this page with all your friends and family and ask them to have a quick look.
The 5th Shadow follows Henry Blank; a lonely, middle aged, burnt out artist on a dark and surreal odyssey into the icy depths of his own hell.
All signs of the child prodigy he once was have disappeared. His wife has run off with an older man, and the only thing left is a house filled with echoes of past happiness. Chased out of his mind by fear, Henry descends through his past, witnesses his own birth, and looks death in the eye - or headlights as it is in this case. However it is a chance encounter with a beautiful jazz singer that determines Henry's fate.
She offers meaning, hope, and together they dissolve time but can she be trusted, or is she bait, luring Henry deeper into chaos where nightmare and reality are no different? Or is she something else all together?
If Henry has any chance of escape he must complete his life's work, a painting even he is petrified of. Ultimately, he must learn to forgive, though he is going to have to cross through hell first.
The 5th Shadow began as a simple idea and grew into a dark, complex tale about loss, heartbreak and failure. It is a look at the intriguing ways we deal with these things. How do we cope? How do we move forward? Where is the line between actuality and delusion when considering ones happiness?
I have always loved films and literature that deal with the truly dark, psychological side of life. Embarking on my first feature film, it was only logical that it was of this nature. If you think of films like David Lynch's 'Lost Highway' of Ray Lawrence' 'Bliss' then you have an idea of what type of film you are backing.
After eight years, eleven months of production, one hundred and fifty hours of footage, forty cast members, a lot of lost sleep, even more cigarettes and the enormous contribution of our executive producers, the film is almost complete. The editing is moving along well and I'm really excited at the shape the film is starting to take. We just need a little more money to finish things like the final edit, sound design and some very cool in-camera visual effects that myself and Gideon Jennings, (D.O.P.) are doing. I can't give too much away but we are hand painting some of the film in a way I have never seen before. Anyway, you'll have to wait and see more on that soon.
The $12,000 we are hoping to raise would barely feed the cast and crew on a Hollywood film, however, if you consider we have spent less than $60,000 to accomplish what we have up until this point, $12,000 along with a lot of favours and some very generous friends in the industry will be enough to scrape through and appear with a completed feature film at the other end of the tunnel.
Any funds raised over this amount will only ease the job at hand and allow us to have the film professionally colour graded, spend more time in the sound studio perfecting the sound design as well as blow off the frontdoor of the heroes house, which I've dreamt about doing for a lot longer than eight years!
P.S. Blowing off the front door of a house without blowing the entire front of the house off, is not cheap.
If you can help complete The 5th Shadow and be part of this mammoth creation, I would love to have you along for the ride. Contributors will receive regular updates about how we are going and how much further there is to go, plus as you'll discover in the rewards, you'll receive a personalised web card on Facebook (emailed to you if you don't use Facebook).
Thank you so much and I hope to hear from you all soon.
WHO IS IN THE FILM?
Actor Joel McIlroy's career began on stage and led eventually to his AFI nominated performance in Daniel Netthiem's short film, 'The Beat Manifesto'.
He later appeared in a variety of roles on Australian television including, Changi, Love Is A Four Letter Word and Home and Away which earned him a silver Logie nomination.
It's the role of Henry Blank in The 5th Shadow however, which most exemplifies McIlroy's efforts to portray the human condition.
“It's a kind of domestic horror until the surface is scratched away, revealing something else, something a little unsettling and closer to home”.
Neveen’s career began straight out of high school in ‘Dylan’ playing Katherine Porter at Belvoir St Theatre, followed by appearances on ‘Home and Away’ & 'GP' which led to roles on ABC’s ‘Rake’, ‘Cops LAC’ and most recently ‘Packed to the Rafters’.
Below are some of the supporting cast I had the pleasure of working with on the film, each and everyone of you, including those Ive not mentioned have contributed in making this, the great film it is fast becoming. Thank you!
WHO MADE THE FILM?
Without the extraordinary crew this film would never have made it past day one.
My eternal thanks go to everyone who has worked, supported, cooked, or poured water for The 5th Shadow.
Woody Allen's 'Take the Money and Run' was the first film experience I ever had. I saw it at the drive in cinema as a double feature with The Man From Snowy River, I was never the same again.
Check out my bio at the top of the page for more information.
Paul's career began at Sydney University as President of the Film Society which led to the attainment of a Masters in Digital Media from COFA at UNSW.
Utilising his knowledge of cinema, he went on to work as a sound designer on the video games Dystopia and Blade Symphony from Puny Human Games whilst continuing his career in film and television
As a producer, Paul is always looking for bold and unique projects to bring to life. Seeing the potential The 5th Shadow had to be a landmark film, meant that bringing this film to fruition was a straight forward decision. Since filming began, the amazing film Paul was expecting was replaced by something far more spectacular; The 5th Shadow has a depth, intensity and beauty that is strikingly rare in our modern cinema landscape.
Gideon studied film with David Sparx and has been a key collaborator for more than ten years as D.O.P. on several short films, ‘Hired Out’, ‘“Run”, He Said’, and the multi-award winning, ‘Under The Brellu’.
During this time Gideon has shot 18 short films, including entries into the Berlin and Cannes Film Festival, and worked on the highly acclaimed, John Pilger documentary, 'Utopia'.
Gideon was drawn to the dark, dualistic aesthetic of the The 5th Shadow, sighting artists Francis Bacon and photographer Gregory Crewdson as inspiration.

Risks and challenges
When it comes to film making, there will always be risks. That's the nature of the beast. The beauty of the position we find ourselves in (having completely shot the film), is that most of the risk has already been taken. You are backing a film that I've personally spent eight years making so it will take spontaneous combustion to stop me finishing it now. Plus I've made a lot of films in the past so I know what is required to see a film through to completion.
I can't guarantee it will be easy, however I can guarantee an outrageous, mind bending, completed film.
The hard part is done, now we just need a little more help in turning all the potential into an amazing film.
Thanks very much and I hope to hear from you all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
