About

Sometime in the past! We thought it would be fun to do a show where the audience played games to try and move the story in different directions; where they fought battles and solved puzzles and built forts and contraptions and all worked to tell a story together. We could have multiple endings! Boss battles! No two shows would be the same!

So! we did it. We wrote out first two “Missions” with multiple routes through the story and different games depending on how well the audience did. Then we ran our first show in a middle school gym, over two days, with a total of 120 kids. Two months later, we did a completely new show with the public.

And it was great!

And then! Our venue, Links Hall, offered us an opportunity: they would continue to host the show and help us develop it through 2012, if we wanted to. And we did.

So we are.

OUR GOALS

1) To put up a full six-show season of Planetary Defense Force missions, beginning in January of 2012.

2) To develop the show for long-term growth, meaning it needs to be a) economically self-sustaining and b) built with reusable, transportable, and sturdy materials.

WHAT IS THE MONEY FOR?

We are raising money for the following things!

1) Set-building materials. Our first two shows were made of cardboard, which is fun but not very reusable. In order for the show to be sustainable, we need to build about ten durable, modular set pieces that can be moved around and recombined to form a bunch of different sets. Like Lego blocks! And the great thing is, once these are built, we can keep using them forever.

2) Prop-building materials. We build different devices and toys for each show, which allow us to play the finest games. Here is a sampling of our "to build" list from our previous shows:

·         Six (6) fully destructible hovercrafts

·         Fourteen (14) three-person dodgeball cannons

·         Ten (10) fully destructible robots

·         Two (2) partially destructible giant robots (one evil)

·         One (1) Medusa Ray (for turning people to stone)

Again, these are built to be durable enough to use over and over. So once these things are built, the upkeep and replacement costs will be very small. After these initial costs, the show will be self-sustaining.

WHAT YOU GET

Any amount of money you donate makes you a FULLY-FLEDGED MEMBER OF THE PDF, meaning you’ll have full access to every mission as it’s being planned, from prototype to finished product. We’ll be updating the Developer’s Diary weekly with behind-the-scenes videos, photos, all of our ideas and breakthroughs and terrible mistakes, from now through our season finale at the end of 2012.

WHAT WE’VE DONE

Our first mission, “The Terror on Monster Island,” went live on April 5th and 7th, 2011, at a middle school in Chicago. No records of this mission exist, because they have been classified. Also our camera didn’t work.

Our first public mission, “March of the Robots,” was performed on May 27-29th, 2011, at Links Hall in Chicago. For more information about this mission go to http://planetarydefenseforce.wordpress.com/.
