About this project
Everyday the world becomes more digitized. In this day and age you can look around and notice everything is becoming web-oriented. Look at the latest IPO's, the majority are web based companies. Every day people have amazing ideas to share with the world. With the low level of overhead for hosting a website and the extreme reach on the internet its amazing that more people have not built websites for their ideas. Everyone has something amazing to share and its time for an easy way to do it with easily available open-source tools. Some seem complex but at the core they are all similar and easy to use once you peel layers back. This can benefit people who want a website for e-commerce, small businesses, artistic portfolio, spreading an idea, and so many other possibilities.
I've been designing and will be implementing a class at JMU on an introduction to web design. I want to take that class and make it available to the world. The idea behind this project is to create an easy to use tutorial website. On this website will have video tutorials (screen casts), all the tools available for download, forums for people to help each other, and a great community.
The systems that are to be covered in tutorials will be:
0. Uploading files to a server and understanding how to setup CMS's
(Eventually expanding beyond to more systems)
The site will be developed using a CMS with extensions/components to help distribute the content easily. It will also be using CMS components to power the web-design based community.
The question you might be asking yourself is how does this differ from current tutorial sites, communities, etc. The idea here is to simplify the experience, the idea here is to make it a logical progression of steps so even the most technologically challenged people can pick this up. The biggest aspect is the community. Most sites are centered around a single CMS or concept. This is around them all and a great place to share you expertise or become and expert in a multitude of systems. It is an open forum for all CMS's and web based concepts. No one is left out and no question unanswered! This is meant to help anyone and everyone that wants to spread their ideas, businesses, and products without the need of expensive development or being put-off from the learning curve! I am also not just going to give you the basics than dump you off. I will include advanced level tutorials to really give your site extreme functionality.
How you will learn:
You may be asking how the system will teach you. What makes it unique? Well we've designed it so it will keep track of where you left off. The lesson are broken down into modules so you can watch a quick video and than go off and do it without losing your place. It breaks thing in easy to learn steps so its not intimidating!
I am not the only subject matter expert out there. There are plenty others that specialize in certain tools or just have an answer to your question. The site is around the concept of the community. A great place to ask, discuss, and learn about all the different CMS's out there! To give you an example of our yahoo style Q/A:
There are so many more features and so much more to do! We need your help to accomplish it. Any size contribution will help make the site one step further to reality.
We have a working website right now but its in its infant stages and cannot give out the link. In order to prove it please check out the project updates and see the screenshots!
Well first up we have the platform learning software. The website will be set up to teach it in sessions with benchmarks for users. Keep track of what sessions/lesson you need or don't need (pre-req's). We also need certain other platforms to share content, ask questions, get more specific help, make suggestions, etc. Next up is platforms because it will be all video taught. It will be utilizing a bunch of platforms to manage up time, security, traffic, etc. So we need S2 bandwidth, our normal server for hosting, Vimeo Premium, and cloudflare business. We would also be able to work with Windows so we need a virtual machine/license. We also take security extremely serious so we need a few security addons.
We will be updating videos according with technology updates. We will also re-do videos if we find that certain viewers are having trouble with a specific part of a part is not explained well enough. We will have an open community with a Q/A style system as well as a forum. We hope to build the first truly open and free community to support these advanced platforms!
