L.I.F.E. in the 23rd Century, is a dystopian tale of consumerism, corporate coffee, and crow bars. Imagine 1984 if it were written by Monty Python. Not as dark as Brazil, not as absurd as The Ministry of Silly Walks.
The novel is written and I'm ready to put it out in the world. However, I don't want to put out a book that looks like it was self-published. I want a book that looks like it belongs on the shelf between Aldous Huxley and George Orwell (or right after if you want to get alphabetical). I need funds to pay the professionals I've recruited to make this a reality.
My first novel, Mating Rituals of Migratory Humans, was published by Pernicious Press and the owners have graciously given me insight into their independent publishing process and, more importantly, the contact information for all their artisans. Beyond getting the novel published, your backing will assist in the formation of my own publishing company.
As a side note: I write books. So, all of the rewards are books in one form or another. I want all the money to go towards making this the best book possible, not to get into the business of making coffee mugs and T-shirts. I will consider that down the road.
Where will the money go?
My asking goal of $5,000 will go towards editing, cover art, cover design, professional layout for the ebook and print versions, professional reviews, marketing, and the fees for using Kickstarter. The breakdown is as follows:
Editing - $400
Cover art - $500
Cover design, Print and Ebook layout - $300
Production - $1,500
Promotion and Marketing - $1,800
Kickstarter fees - $500
What happens if you earn beyond the $5,000?
LOCKED: $7,000 -- Book Launch Party in Colorado and Oregon.
The bulk of my family and friends are either in Northern Colorado or near Portland, OR. I intend to have a book launch in Portland at Mother Focault's Book Store (if Craig will have me again) and figure out how to do something similar in Fort Collins, CO. This is what I did for my first novel and I'd like to make it a tradition. If I meet this milestone, it will pay for the trip to Colorado with the wife, a local band (or more) at each event, and (some of) the drinks are on me.
LOCKED: $10,000 -- Limited Edition Hardcover Upgrade.
I don't expect an individual to back me at $10k, but Kickstarter allowed it, so there it is. If the project reaches $10k everyone that contributed at any level at or above $100 or more will get a (one copy) limited edition signed and numbered hardcover of L.I.F.E. in the 23rd Century. (The Librarian, The President, The Chosen One, Corporate Sponsorship, and The Plutocrat.) This will be a different version from the reward for The Commemorative Collector.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge is getting to $5,000. The book is written. The cover art exists, though it hasn't been paid for. All that is left is putting things together and having a professional editor go through the whole thing.
If there are delays with editing, layout, and cover design (not worried about that, but things happen), I have several alternates for all three.
This is my first time trying to put a book into the world "by myself" (without a publisher doing everything but the writing). But I'm confident that I can make this happen with the team I have assembled.
I think that's it. I'm open to questions.
