We have 3 acres of fertile land located in the High Sierra Desert in Reno, NV. Temperatures in the summertime can get well above 100 degrees and freeze in early autumn. We have come up with the design to extend our growing season by 30 percent. With some plants we know we can keep them growing year round.
We have done a lot of research and have come up with an aquaponics system that fits our needs. We will have (4) 16 Foot long beds that will be covered by a 30' geodesic dome greenhouse. Temperatures will remain more stable than outside temperatures. We will have over 30 Koi Fish in a fish pond dug into the ground. The water will be pumped through a series of filters and then will be directed to the first aquaponics growing bed. Once the bed fills to the top it will have a gravity fed bell syphon that will dump into the next bed and the process will start again until it eventually ends up completely filtered into the original fish pond.
This type of system will allow us to grow vegetables year round for our local community.
Chickens will live inside the dome and naturally fertilize the soil and keep warm enough year round to never stop laying eggs. The benifit of having chickens in our greenhouse dome will be to provide natural heat in the wintertime.
We have estimated that 1800$ will cover our costs to build everything.
The land that we have is completely flat and ready to be grown in.
Having the dome covering will allow us to avoid local insect infestations and keep a much more balanced enviornment for our fish, worms, and ladybugs.

Risks and challenges
We have built numerous domes for customers across North America. Building the greenhouse and all of its components will not be a problem.
The challenges we face are the unknown. We want to try growing new species of plants that do not normally grow in a climate where it freezes. We will be able to stay above 50 degrees year round no matter what the temperature is outside.
Because we are in a desert climate ventilation might be the most difficult process.
We will be using a solar ventilation fans strategically located to create the venturi effect in our dome. As hot air rises cool air will be brought in underneath it and all hot air at the top will be pumped out of the dome. If it gets hot enough outside we could face overheating issues. All of the fans are powered by a solar panel so when the sun hits the dome the fans will come on automatically.
We plan to make emergency vents in the covering if that were to happen.
Fish are hard to keep alive unless they are in a balanced enviornment. It will take approximately 30 days to get all the proper bacteria in all of our beds to create a sustainable enviornment for both our plants and animals.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
