Writing and running have a lot in common, especially that feeling in the pit of your gut that tells you to be afraid, very afraid, just before you start. But in writing as well as running, sometimes the fear and dread turn out to have been misplaced. Sometimes you are powered as if from without by a feeling that you can do what you have never done before. NIGHT RUNNING is a project all about breaking through that feeling of fear and dread and discovering exciting new possibilities. It's a book of essays by five different writers, each alone in the night, each exploring the raw hope and agony of life that we so often keep hidden, bottled up inside or at best, meted out with half-ironic camouflage.

Our all-star lineup of essayists includes - in order of planned appearance in the book - Pete Danko, a former sports columnist in Southern California who has also written for the New York Times and Mountain Bike Magazine; Emily Mitchell, author of the acclaimed novel THE LAST SUMMER OF THE WORLD whose essays have appeared in the New York Times and New Statesman; Steve Kettmann, author of ONE DAY AT FENWAY and three New York Times best-sellers as a co-writer/ghost writer; Dahlia Scheindlin, an international public opinion researcher and political strategist who has published articles in the New York Times, Foreign Policy, Huffington Post and Haaretz; and T.J. Quinn, an award-winning investigative reporter for ESPN who has reported widely on performance-enhancing drugs. He also appears as a regular guest anchor on the ESPN program “Outside the Lines.”

With your generous support, we will be able to edit the final version of the book and prepare it for publication by early next year. We've done a lot of work already, but to make the final push, we need your help. Visit the project website at www.nightrunningbooks.com and, if you're inspired, submit your own essay. This is a project all about discovering new possibilities and we hope that goes for readers as well as for our essayists. NIGHT RUNNING the book also kicks off Wellstone Books, a new independent book publisher looking at ways to help tap new voices through personal writing that is not afraid to inspire.

Risks and challenges

As with the forays into the night described in the essays we are preparing for publication in NIGHT RUNNING, every book project represents a leap of faith. We do not know if the collection will reach fifty readers or fifty thousand. But just having these five diverse voices gathered in one book, we think, will be an accomplishment - and if we inspire only a few people to get out and try something different, whether it's running or writing or something completely different, the project will have been well worth all the hard work. Thank you for helping us to make this possible - and please, write us and let us know how you like the essays.
