It was the year 2020, Artificial Intelligence was becoming more and more popular around the world. Due to the potential threat of AI becoming self-aware, the governments of the world had to work together to prevent the possible extinction of the human race, in doing so, they created the XERA Corporation.
A new law was soon taken up by all governments of the world. This law strictly prevents any further research and development of artificial intelligence. There was a loophole, which would allow the XERA Corporation to legally seize all research and prototypes created, and continue the research and development at its own facility.
In 2022, the first artificial intelligent humanoid went online. Soon after, it showed signs of consciousness and emotion. Then one night, it disappeared from the facility. The humanoid found an abandoned factory, which is where it created hundreds of replications of itself.
The military soon took over the XERA facility, and sent out a remote update to the humanoids. Something went wrong, the updates were corrupted. They started to turn against the whole of humanity and the world fell into war. Everything is chaos, it's kill, or be killed.
This is a story of a future, no one saw coming.
XERA: Survival is an open world humanoid-apocalypse multiplayer survival game. In a world controlled by humanoid robots, players have to scavenge the world to find supplies to survive - not only against the humanoids, but also other players.
Driven by the passion of the survival genre, I felt there was something missing. A large number of survival games are surrounded around a 'Zombie Apocalypse' theme, I thought that I could introduce a new style of game to the survival genre.
I have always been fascinated by Artificial Intelligence and in the most recent years, with AI becoming more intelligent, this seemed like a perfect fit - a "Robot Apocalypse". XERA: Survival is one of the first open world multiplayer survival games to have a humanoid / robot themed apocalypse. I hope this will bring a fresh mood to the genre.
I'm an avid gamer - so I know how important good PVP mechanics are. In order to support fast-paced PVP combat - the mechanics need to be fluid and responsive. XERA: Survival has been built from the ground up with these elements in mind, which provides an amazing PVP experience.
We feel that multiplayer games provide a far better & longer lasting experience than single-player games. That's why XERA: Survival has been built from the ground up with multiplayer support. You have the ability to play with your friends, or play against others from all around the world - the choice is yours.
Player Capacity. For the current map - the player cap for the servers will be around 50. A larger map is planned which will have a player cap of around 100 Players per server. While it is very possible to do this now, it is important to find the balance between server performance & game play.
Voice Over IP (VOIP). Communication is important in every multiplayer survival game, whether you're screaming "I'm friendly!!" or taunting your enemies - you will be heard. With directional support, you can pinpoint where the voice is coming from.
Cross Region Inventory. Character inventories are stored on a master server, which crosses over every region and every official server. You can logout of an American server, and have all your items on a European server. This enables players to group up with friends and meet players from all over the world.
Server Geography. Having low latency is an important element in a fast paced PVP game - so that's why XERA: Survival will launch with server locations in - North America, Europe, Asia & Oceania.
Private / Custom Servers. Player owned private servers will be hosted by us and we plan to make them purchasable through an in-game interface.
Players will be able to create a server with default rule sets which connects with the official servers, this means Global Inventory, Character Inventory, etc. will still work just like an official server.
Alternatively players can customise the server to their needs. When a private server is customised it will run in a "sandbox" mode and no longer connect with official servers.

Private servers will also come with administration tools for the owner to kick & ban players.
Anti-cheat Solution. We want our players to have the confidence that they are playing in a cheat-free environment, which is why we are implementing Easy Anti Cheat. We will also have game moderators constantly monitoring & processing player reports around the clock.
Easy Anti-Cheat is the most advanced and complete solution in the market, used in games like Rust, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands and Hunt: Showdown to name a few. They bring fast automation and a hybrid security engine to detect and prevent cheat software.
We have a zero tolerance for cheaters and will go to all lengths to keep XERA: Survival a fun environment for legitimate players.
Player VS Player VS Environment. While XERA: Survival is heavily focused on PVP, there are still environmental factors to worry about. Be cautious of the roaming humanoids and keep on top of your hydration and hunger levels.
Easy to use Inventory System. The inventory has been designed with simplicity in mind. It is very easy to quickly understand, and use. With drag & drop functionality, large icons, item descriptions and a player character preview.
Simple HUD. Clean UI is very important, all of the UI in XERA: Survival has been designed with simplicity in mind. The HUD is no exception, only displaying what is needed to reduce screen clutter.
Find loot to survive. Adventure through the world scavenging for resources to survive. Find weapons, food, drinks and medical supplies to stay alive & protect yourself. The world's loot system is constantly spawning & re-spawning items around the map, so roaming is your best option to finding more loot.
Stash your loot. The global inventory is where survivors can store their items safely. This is done inside of a Safe Settlement. Your global inventory is saved across servers and does not wipe on death.
The world is yours. The map is an open-world environment, explore, scavenge, and stay on your feet to survive. Find a location to make yours, and guard it with your life. As night time comes, you should use it as an opportunity to scavenge as other players will find it hard to spot you.
Full Player Loot Drop. There's no better feeling than seeing your enemies explode like a loot piñata. When you kill an enemy everything is dropped where they fall. Armed with weapons you have found in the world - kill your enemy, take what was theirs and make it your own.
Mission System. The mission system will provide players with a task to do for a reward. There will be different types of missions depending on the type of character they take the mission from. Such as collecting specific items or delivering items across the map the other safe settlement.
Fortification / Barricading. The barricade / fortification system allows players to place objects such as sandbags to barricade themselves from enemies. It is useful for taking control of a building and making it your own.
Choose your play style. Be a nomad survivor lurking in the dark, a notorious bandit, or a vigilante helping others - the choice is yours.
Third & First Person. Depending on what you enjoy, you have the choice to switch between third & first person views. For the die hard first person fans, servers locked to FP is planned.
Armour System. Players can find armour & helmets in the world to protect themselves. Various types of armour, protect different amounts.
Medical System. The medical system is a simplified style, with various ways to apply the medical items. Most medical items are applied instantly, with a cooldown. While the cooldown is active, no other medical items that have cooldowns can be applied.
Types of medical item applying:
- Instant apply & heal with a cooldown preventing use of more medical items
- Instant apply with a gradual heal over time, with a cooldown
- A placeable 'Medical Kit' which heals multiple players within a small radius
Grenades & Explosives. The grenade system is extremely easy to use, with a projectile prediction preview to help line up those hard shots.

Competitive Game Mode. Being a PVP focused survival game, rewarding competitive gameplay is a huge attraction for players. Competitive servers which will use a 'Skill Rating' based system is planned. Skill rating loss/gain will be based off multiple factors, such as how long the killer / victim player has survived for and how much skill rating the killer / victim currently has.
Player controlled drones are a huge part of XERA. They can be used in a lot of situations and can help with tactical gameplay.

This is Redwood Valley, named after the iconic Redwood Tree which covers most of map. Redwood Valley is currently 10km squared.
Day & Night Cycle. The day and night cycle in XERA: Survival adds a whole new dynamic to game play. As day moves into night, the AI become more of a threat, different variations come out in darkness - with improved resistance & speeds.
Dynamic Weather System. A weather system has been implemented which adds dynamic elements to combat & survival situations. Your play style will need to change depending on the weather conditions.

Additional Maps. The creation of more maps is planned in the future. We intend to use World Creator which provides us with a powerful array of creative tools to create large detailed terrain with realistic erosion, mountains, rivers and more. We plan to give the future maps a different theme, such as desert, snow, jungle/tropic.
The enemy AI are Humanoid Robots. In the lore, they were originally programmed to push the boundary of synthetic consciousness.
Current AI Abilities:
- Roaming System - Roams around their spawn vicinity looking for enemies
- Melee Attack - Chases & melee attacks a players
- Armed AI - Has the ability to use arms and shoot players in range
- Door Opening - If you are inside, they will open the door. They will also open doors if they want to roam inside of a building.
- Audio Sensory Perception System - Hearing nearby sounds such as gunshots & footsteps
Future AI Types:
- Boss AI - which will require more skill & resources to defeat
- Smaller AI - which will have more mobility to quickly attack players
- Flying drone AI - which will scout cities and forests looking for players, then alerting other AI types of positions whilst carrying out attacks
The end goal is to make them quite intelligent, with the ability to make decision for themselves, loot the world, manage their own inventory, upgrade themselves, find better loot and more.
A skill tree & experience system is planned, with multiple skill tree types:
Survival Skill Tree - The survival skill tree will be primary focused on skills relating to survival. You will be able to unlock skills which will improve specific game elements, such as jumping using less hydration or hunger & hydration levels reducing slower.
Combat Skill Tree - The combat skill tree will focus on elements of combat, such as the ability to hold your breath longer, medical items being more effective, being able to heal other players.
Crafting Skill Tree - The crafting skill tree will allow players to gradually unlock new blueprints to craft as they level up.
The crafting system will be a 'blueprint' learning based system. Once a player has learned a specific blueprint, they will be able to craft a new item if they have the required materials. Materials for crafting will be found in the world or harvested. Some examples of crafted items:
- Medical Supplies (E.g alcohol + cloth)
- Melee Weapon Upgrades (E.g adding barb wire, or nails to a bat)
- Fortification Supplies (E.g Sandbag Barricade, Wooden barricade)
- Camp Fire (For cooking things such as raw fish)
- Molotov & other throwables (E.g Gas + cloth)
Thanks to the community translators, multi-language localisation has already been implemented into XERA: Survival. There are currently 7 available languages.
Community Involvement. Since day 1, XERA: Survival has been community driven. A large amount of the development has been live streamed on Twitch. As our community grows we want each and everyone's voices to be heard. Through various platforms we will ensure there is always a place for you to voice your opinions, whether it be positive or constructive - we want to hear it all.
Closed Pre-Alpha Testing. During development of XERA: Survival we've had over 1700 people play across 12 Stress Tests over 12 Months. We have been receiving and acting on both feedback and bug reports since the very early stages of development.
Flexibility & Shaping Future Development. We want the community to be heavily involved in shaping the future of XERA. While we do have a bunch of ideas of our own, we will always be open minded about new ideas that the community bring forward.
You can already see what has been achieved basically on my own, with a very small budget. I have put in a huge amount of time and passion to get XERA: Survival to where it is today. You are backing a game with an already functional alpha, which has been tested, and played by over 1700 players from around the world.

Risks and challenges
With any new venture there are many risks involved. Most of those risks have already been taken to get XERA: Survival to where it is today. You can already see the progress made by one person with a very small budget. Imagine what I can do once I have a bigger team and more capital to work with!
Cheaters - like any multiplayer game, there will be an attraction to use cheats to gain advantage over other players. Especially in this genre. While I can't go fully into depth on how I will handle cheaters (for obvious reasons) these are some key things I will be implementing:

- Game Moderation Team who will be closely working with the community and will be continuously monitoring, investigating and punishing cheaters
