About this project
WAAM Industries is a new collaborative design effort, between Andrew Vomhof and Karl Zinsmaster. We have been collaborating as designers and makers for the past decade. This is our first fully developed joint work under the moniker WAAM Industries.
The Shellphone Loudspeaker began as a simple solution to expand our phones' musical capabilities. Our product functions on the same principle as cupping your hand around a speaker to direct and amplify its sound. Through much experimentation, we have refined the Shellphone Loudspeaker to its current functional and elegant form.
We are are seeking funding for the Shellphone Loudspeaker to bring our final prototype into production, and introduce it to the masses!
Our base material is the Whelk shell, a native species of the North Atlantic coast. The Whelk shells are collected on the beaches of Florida by a U.S. supplier that warehouses and sells them after they are cleaned.
In our shop, we will be hand-cutting, shaping and custom fitting each Whelk shell to receive your phone. These processes are necessary to provide optimum functionality of each Shellphone Loudspeaker. Attention to craftsmanship is our passion, and is what makes our products individuals and unique.
With your contributions, we will be able to pay for the workspace, materials, packaging and time needed to individually craft your Shellphone Loudspeakers.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest risk to the completion of this project is the supply of whelk shells in the size that we use to create the Shellphone Loudspeaker. We are confident there are enough shells in the size we need in warehouses throughout the United States, but if they were to become unavailable somehow, we would need to seek a new supplier or shell, and therefore adjust the design and production as needed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
