In my new record, Already There Yet, I will take the listener on a journey through music from all over the world as seen through the eyes of jazz harmony and improvisation. The jazz-inspired harmonies, driving sambas and the wonderfully danceable odd time signatures from the Balkans create an unforgettable sound with original compositions and arrangements held together by this band’s fine musicianship.
I'm excited to be working with an amazing group of musicians on this record:
Davy Mooney on guitar (www.davymooney.net)
Yuka Tadano on bass (www.yukatadano.com)
Cody Rahn on drums (www.codyrahn.com) and
Eric Trudel joining us on the tenor saxophone (http://www.myspace.com/erictrudelmusic).
Curious? Here’s a link to videos of us playing some of the tracks from the album at our most recent gig: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Acn7M7jd_zE&feature=youtu.be
I grew up with one foot in two cultures - halfway between Sweden and California. I find that there are more similarities between people than we allow ourselves to see. By mixing the music of diverse cultures - traditional Swedish folk songs with Baltic time signatures, moving sambas and jazz harmonies - I want to show you the similarities between all these different styles and between the different cultures in your own lives. I believe that the fundamental nature of a culture can be found in their music, and I’m fascinated by how many similarities there are in music from such diverse sources. All traditional music shares the same energy and emotion. It shares these very similar harmonic and melodic structures and a strong rhythmic drive. I believe that if you go beneath culture, conflict, and customs, the forces that motivate humanity are very much the same. By mixing my native music with that of other cultures I hope to illuminate those similarities, and strive to get you to see what I see.
Risks and challenges
Producing the Album
"Already There Yet" is my third album. In addition to a solid production plan, I’ve assembled a fantastic group of musicians. Everyone in this diverse band brings his or her own flavor to the music, creating a cohesive thread in this giant, cross-cultural music exchange with jazz at its core. We’ll be rehearsing extensively and playing three live gigs together over the next several weeks in preparation for recording.
The production of "Already There Yet" will happen right along with this Kickstarter campaign. Over the next six weeks we will rehearse, record, and send the tracks for mixing. We will record at Tedesco Studios on December 14th and 15th. My Producer Charlie Smith will take the final cuts to his studio in Seattle to be mixed and mastered. While it’s being mixed, I will work out the pressing and layout with an environmentally friendly CD manufacturer so that the record can be made as soon as the mixing and mastering is done, in as green of a fashion as possible. The final release date for "Already There Yet" is set for March 15th, 2013 - which gives us plenty of time for any of the unforeseen delays that can come up during production.
Albums cost a lot of money to make. The two days we will spend at Tedesco Studios recording the music is really only the beginning of making the record available to you. Between musician fees, studio time, mixing. production, mastering, pressing, artwork and layout, distribution, and promotion, the full budget for this project is approximately $7000 dollars.
This Kickstarter’s $4000 goal is just a portion of that. Some of the funding is already secured. For the rest - this $4000 goal - I’m counting on your support. As a supporter, I’ll keep you in the loop as the band rehearses, records, and performs. You’ll get special behind-the-scenes footage, bonus tracks, and other nifty things.
Any amount you can contribute makes a real difference. Donate $10 or $100! Pre - order an album, and you’ll receive your copy before the official release date. In addition, if you support the project at a higher level, you’ll get various other fabulous benefits when the album is released. Check out the rewards page for more information!
I want to thank you so much for visiting my Kickstarter page for "Creating Already There Yet". I’m so excited to bring you the music I’ve been working on since I moved to New York and make you part of the process as we record this album. In recognition of that, every single person who donates will receive a free MP3 download of my "Log Lake Sessions", a solo recording I made at Log Lake in the Trinity Alps, and an invitation to the album release party in March.
If you have any questions about the album, the project, or the rewards, please feel free to email me - or find me after a gig. I look forward to seeing you there!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
