About

NewsThump is a satirical news website in the UK that has been creating topical spoof news and satire since 2009. You (well, not just you) read three million of our stories every month, and millions more of you see them on social media.

Funny headlines have been making us laugh for years, and now we want you to have the same fun at home that we have at work.

The challenge is to complete the funniest, most offensive or most topical headline from the cards you've been dealt. A headline is made up of a Headline card, an Action Card and an Object card.

Each player is given a hand of 5 Action, and 5 Object cards, with one of each to be played together to complete a headline which is started by the 'Editor' - a role that changes each round. Think of them as the 'dealer'.

The Editor starts a headline with a Headline card chosen from the deck at random, and each player lays - face down - their best combination of action and object cards in order to create the funniest, most offensive, or 'most likely to be real' headline.

The Editor turns over the cards and decides the winner.

Everyones take two further cards from the deck to ensure they are back up to 10 cards, and the Editor role is passed on to the next player in turn who then selects the next Headline starter card.

You can download the rulebook HERE.

This animation shows a typical selection of cards for any player and the combinations possible:

The box contains instructions and a full deck of NewsThump cards, which includes:

  • 100 Headline starter cards (including areas such as politics, sports, and entertainment)
  • 200 Action cards
  • 200 Object Cards

Yes, that really is FIVE HUNDRED cards.

The mathematicians amongst you have already realised this means there are potentially 6.2 million headline combinations within the game, so you can play for a good long while without it getting repetitive.

We are partnering with Cartamundi in the UK to produce the game, who are a well-established card games manufacturer. They were not the cheapest, but it means the game will be manufactured fairly locally and we will have far more control in ensuring we produce a high-quality game that gets into your hands as quickly as possible.  If we meet our funding goal, we plan to have the game shipped out to you within 12-13 weeks - in plenty of time for Christmas.

The games will be distributed to you by GamesQuest in the UK, who again have an excellent track record in delivering games to kickstarter backers in the UK and around the world.

We're deliberately keeping the pledge tiers simple, without added products like t-shirts that don't really add to the game and just complicate shipping process - we're most interested in getting the game into your hands as quickly as we can.

Risks and challenges

The main risk is in the production process. However, we have done everything we can to reduce this risk by partnering with a well-established supplier - Cartamundi - who have a long and successful track record in producing card and board games, including many games also successfully funded on kickstarter.

The games will be manufactured in Europe, reducing shipping time and giving us better quality-control. The distribution of the game has been arranged with UK-based GamesQuest who again have an excellent track record in distributing kickstarter-backed games to backers from the UK and around the world.

The content of the game itself is 100% complete, with test players using decks that were 50-75% complete to prove the concept and gameplay.

Fortunately for us, all the people involved in testing really enjoyed playing it. You can watch the promotional video at the top of the page to better understand the gameplay.
