One Stage. Five Hours. 40 Comedians. A Million Laughs. Absolutely FREE! Sunday, September 14, 2014. Noon — 5:30 PM. Sharon Meadow, Golden Gate Park.
This gift of laughter to the Bay Area and beyond will last forever — even if we have to use our late founder Jose Simon’s memorial bench in Golden Gate Park as a stage, and a bullhorn instead of a microphone. As long as comedy fans are looking for a laugh, Comedy Day is committed to providing five hours of free comedy in the park every year. And that’s a promise.
The good news is that we have a stage, a sound system, food and beverages, and the all-important port-a-potties, to help us present our annual fun fest. Our goal is to buffer our funds for 2014, and to raise the flag high as we approach our 35th annual event in 2015 to make it the most spectacular Comedy Day ever. Every dollar we earn over our goal will be used to fund our outreach programs, special projects, and to make Comedy Day a more enjoyable event for fans, comedians, sponsors, and staff.
San Francisco's professional comedy community joins together each year to produce this highly entertaining show to help make it the most anticipated comedy event of the year. Won’t you help us be the best we can be? We promise to keep you laughing.
Comedy Day is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) event that has turned into a long-standing tradition in San Francisco. Heavily supported by leading Bay Area media companies, the event has attracted more than 60,000 attendees in a single day. And because we're a not-for-profit organization, your donation is tax deductible!
Contributions to Comedy Day help in four ways:
1) Supporting the production of each year's annual event;
2) Providing our outreach program presenting workshops teaching conflict resolution through the use of humor to Bay Area public schools;
3) Producing comedic entertainment for nonprofit benefits, as well as to patients in hospitals, nursing homes and hospices, residents of homeless shelters, and wherever people can use a good laugh. For example, Comedy Day recently produced a comedy benefit for Housing 1000 in Santa Clara, CA that raised enough money to provide permanent housing for three homeless individuals; and
4) Spearheading special projects, such as seeking support from the City of San Francisco to raise funds to create a Walk of Fame on Columbus Avenue from the site of the old hungry i to the Purple Onion paying tribute to the comedians who performed in these famous venues, petitioning the City of San Francisco for a Comedy History Museum.
San Francisco's Comedy Celebration Day in Golden Gate Park started in 1981 and for 33 consecutive years our non profit organization has provided a daylong event featuring top national headliners along with the rising stars of Bay Area standup comedy. For free. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. No money. Walk right over to the park and laugh.
Our beginning saw us catch the crest of the comedy wave and now here in the 21st century another boom sees comedy on the upswing again with hot rooms and open mics in every community across the country. It is said that laughter is the best medicine and our goal is to heal the nation, one laugh at a time.
Our organization has also taken on the mission of bringing laughter to kids in hospitals and schools, creating workshops in conflict resolution through humor. We also work with adults in various companies teaching self-confidence by facing down the fear of speaking in front of an audience. Now this is the first time we have reached out to comedy lovers for help to continue our noble cause. Frankly we operate on a shoestring and it is with deep humility and trepidation we now ask you, the comedy community, to help us with the funds we need to make the 2015 event a triumph. Asking, hell, we’re begging.
This long standing and globally cherished tradition needs your assistance. Over the past 33 years, Comedy Day has entertained nearly one million comedy fans and the comics nurtured on that stage have gone on to bring laughter to the world. Become a stakeholder in the future of Comedy Day in Golden Gate Park by taking a minute to make a donation to preserve this eagerly anticipated and highly-valued event.
It was our founder Jose Simon’s dream to provide free comedy to the people of San Francisco and our organization has carried that dream in our heart for years. We are an all volunteer group which means nobody gets paid. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. No money, you get the idea. So won’t you please find it in your hearts and your pockets and your piggy banks and your IRA portfolio to join our funny family. From our board president Debi Durst and the rest of us, thank you! And as Jose Simon used to say, “Long live the comedy spirit”.

Risks and challenges
For the past 34 years, Comedy Day has provided a free day of entertainment for the Bay Area and beyond. Because we operate on a shoestring budget, we always rely on the good graces of vendors and sponsors to help us through. But, as next year is our 35th anniversary, we are really hoping to receive some additional support from our comedy fans.
In order to produce a a successful event it costs Comedy Day about $35,000 a year. The park permit alone is $10,000! Add in our production company that builds the stage each year, tent rentals, port-a-potties, dumpsters, and trash cans, plus our sound system, generator, police presence, health permits etc., and you can see how it easily adds up.
ALL PERFORMERS DONATE THEIR TALENTS.
