Timbertales introduction

Timbertales is a fantasy turn based hex field strategy game. I want to create a game with the feeling of classical games like Battle Isle or Civilization, but I don't want to create another war game in this "world war" genre, so here we are with animals :)

In Timbertales you will first have to draft an army before starting the game. Unlike other turn based strategy games you will not have to produce units in game. Its more based on a table top strategy game approach. While processing through the game you will be able to unlock new units for drafting and collect them.

If you enter the game we have a classic hex tiled map. You will have to move your units around the map and clear out different map objectives or challenges. Every attack is handled instantly so you will see the results as fast as possible and you are able to plan your next steps immediately. We also provide special abilities for many units so you can make the choice for just attacking or using special abilities like heal or a more powerful kind of attack.

There will be different game modes available for solo playing and multiplayer. To spice things even more up, the maps in multiplayer and challenge mode will provide optional objectives for tactical decisions. For example on the plague of insects map you can destroy an insect hive. If the hive is destroyed the insects hunt down all enemy units. To secure those objectives can be a good strategy, but maybe also opens your base for an attack.

Platforms

Android: Timbertales will be available on Google Play-Store. Amazon underground is planned as well.

iOS: The iOS - Version will of course be available in the AppStore

Desktop: Timbertales will support all common desktop OS (OSX, Windows and Linux) and will be distributed through steam (Currently on Steam Greenlight http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=723740700).

I want to do things different!

I founded rainware to create cross platform games for core gamers. In my opinion there are too much games that are based on the same principle, are mostly casual and you will have to spend a lot of money if you want to compete with other players. My vision is: Provide a full game experience without being pay to win. Feature list

Races - At the moment in Timbertales we have two different races: the vermin and the sylvan. Each race consists of multiple units which are very unique in look and feel.

Single Player Campaigns - There will be a campaign for every race in the game. For the game start we plan to have the tutorial, a prolog, a campaign for the sylvan fraction and a campaign for the vermin fraction. Every campaign contains multiple missions and you will be able to earn many rewards, which are very useable in the other game modes.

Single Player Challenge Mode - A very unique game mode, create an army of limited options and climb up a special ranking! You will have to defeat an ai opponent with an increasing skill level. With each win your challenge level will be increased and the opponent will get stronger as your rewards will!

Unranked multiplayer - In this mode you can play against other players to test new army compositions or strategies.

Ranked multiplayer - You can compete with your individual army compositions against other players. There is a special ranking for ranked games based on an elo rating.

Arena multiplayer - A special challenging game mode. Create an army with limited options and crush your enemies. As soon as you lost 3 times with your army the arena ends and you will receive rewards for your progress.

Army creation - Create your own army, as it's known from Tabletop games. Unlock new characters and rewards to improve your army composition

Skins - There are special skins for all units available and much more skins will follow. These skins will change the look and feel of an unit.

Ranking - Several rankings will show your progress through different game modes. There will be lists for arena, challenge and ranked mode.

Skills - Some units have special abilities. These abilities can be used to heal or empower allied units. Some Abilities can also deal damage.

Spheres - Every unit which is defeated has a special drop chance of an unique type of a sphere. There are heal spheres which can heal your units, critical strike spheres which increases the critical strike chance for several rounds and acorn point sphere which increases your acorn points. Acorn points is the in game currency.

Portraits - You can choose an portrait for your account. To unlock new portraits you will have to fulfill different requirements such as a specific race level.

Maps - In challenge and multiplayer mode there will be special maps to play on. These maps provide special optional map objectives. If those objectives are completed different events can happen and will grant you an advantage. (introduction will follow in a separate video)

Heroes - Another feature planned are heroes. You will want to draft one hero to your army from a collection of multiple heroes per race. Of course you will have to unlock those heroes first to use them. Heroes are stronger than units and have 2 special abilities. If your hero dies the game ends immediately. (introduction will follow in a separate video)

Map diversity

To give maps more influence on the game. I want to create more new cool maps with their own mechanics. For example on the map: Plague of insects, you can destroy an insect nest and the insects will hunting down your enemies in return. I have a lot of concepts in my mind. Another example would be a map, where you have to collect acorns and bring them to a god. The first player, who collected the required amount receives a strong unit in return or the god attacks the base of the enemy. There are many ideas in my mind and I need time to sort and evaluate them :)

Heroes

With heroes I want to bring heroes into the game. Every race will receive their own unique Heroes. Heroes will be stronger than units and will have two special abilities. If a hero dies the game is lost immediately. This will give a strong focus on the hero. I imagine that the hero will also gaining experience while playing maybe permanent, maybe just for the game. The concept is very raw at the moment and I have to specify it even more. But there are more ideas related to heroes: 

  • Gaining expierence
  • Collecting items which improves the hero
  • One hero is required in every army
  • Different specializations e.g. Tank or Supporter

Combat

The combat system is based on the system which is used in "Starcraft". This means we have different unit types and different attack types. The unit types are small, medium and large. The attack types are normal, piercing and breaking. If two types clashes each other the types are used to calculate the critical hit chance for the unit for example if a normal attack type is fighting against any armor type he will always have the standard 10% critical strike hit chance. But if an piercing attack type is fighting vs. a small armor type he will receive a 100% bonus which means he has a critical hit chance of 20%. Critical hits will be displayed with a bigger yellow number while normal hits are shown in white color.

 Army builder

In the army builder you will spend some time to create your armies. For each different game mode the army builder will act a little bit different. In the arena or challenge mode you will be able to draft your army with all units, but 3 random units will be banned. This means you will not be able to use these 3 units for your army until your army lost 3 times and you roll a new army where 3 different random units are banned. In the campaigns sometimes you are not able to draft any units, since you will get specific units for a mission. If you are able to draft units in a mission you can use all your units you have already unlocked. The last game modes are unranked and ranked. For this modes you should create your own army, but you can also use a basic army. For these modes you are able to draft all units which you have already unlocked.

Challenge and Arena

As written in the army builder section for this modes you need to create a new army with limit options (3 random units are banned). Before you are able to draft your challenge or arena army you need to pay the entrance for these modes. This can be done by in game currency, a master account or real money. After you paid the entrance you have to draft your army. If this is finished you can play with your drafted army until you lost 3 times. Then you will receive random rewards based on your results.

Campaigns

In the campaigns you are able to find out more about the story. First you should start with the tutorial and get some basic information how the game works. After that it's time for the prolog which tells the story about the conflict in Timbertales. If you have finished the prolog you can go on with the race campaigns, which give you more insight about the race story and their position in the conflict. Each campaign contains of several missions with very different and unique mission objectives. All maps are handcrafted and unique.

Skins

As known from other games with skins you are able to change the look and feel of specific units. Planned are basic skins, which just change the look of the unit and advanced skins, which also changes the animations and sounds of the unit. These skins will be available for in game purchases or with a master account.

Rankings

The rankings will show your progress in comparison with other players. There will be rankings for challenge mode, which show your highest challenge level, for the arena mode, which shows your highest arena level and for ranked games, which shows your actual elo rating. I have also plans for some kind of tournaments, seasons and a league system.

In-App-Purchases

The game will be free and can be played by everyone. There are some in app purchases, but they will not have any influences on the game itself. This is one of the most important part for me. Most of the in app purchases can be done by in game currency, which can be collected by playing. If you have a master account you will not have to pay for anything ever. The in app purchases are: Arena / Challenge entrance, Campaign entrance, unlock random units for the army builder and skins. Skins are the only option available for only real money purchases.

Translations

The game is already ready to support multiple languages. I will add english and german with the start of the game. For the other languages i will need some help by translators or spend some budget to get translations done.

Schedule

Closed beta is already running and the game is tested by a few players. If we can reach the goal on kickstarter it will take me two more months to release the game. This means october 2016

Stretch Goals

I will finish and release Timbertales in every case. If we reach the goal on kickstarter I will be able to finish the game in the next two months and release it on PlayStore, AppleStore and for Linux / Mac / PC.

If we don't hit the goal I have to focus on some freelance projects to earn some more money. This means it will delay the release and development of timbertales for quite some time. 

So of course the better way would be to reach the goal :)

€ 1.500 - Timbertales will be released in October 2016!

€ 2.000 - Introducing 2 new map with their own unique mechanics on top of the 4 maps already planned!

€ 3.000 - Daily quests to earn more acorn points, AI improvements for better moving and doing more complicated strategies

€ 4.500 - Movement improvements which basically means unit movement is more dependent from the terrain. Graphic Update! I am happy with my graphics for now, but there is a lot of space with this amount I could hire someone!

€ 6.000+ - If we collect that much money i could commit to game development for the rest of the year which would be super nice because that opens the way for some features which are already in my mind: Team vs Team, special challenge scenarios, leagues, seasons, tournaments and of course more content

Risks and challenges

Timbertales is already running in a closed beta state. There shouldn't be much more challenges or risks. The only thing i am aware of is the handling of multiple connections at the same time, if the load is increasing. But this problem is already calculated in my time frame to make the server more stable and handling more players at once. So i would say there isn't much risk at all.
