Defeat Earnshaw’s theorem with your very own Halitron™. Spin a top within a carefully calculated magnetic field and watch it 'float' in mid-air. This fascinating gadget is not only a cool accessory to play with, but it lets you truly experiment and helps explain fundamental space and physics theories.

Background

We've been developing The Halitron™ over several years, with each iteration providing further insight into the world of magnetic traps. The Halitron™ not only displays a fascinating phenomenon, but the physics concepts that it demonstrates are relevant across many different fields, including space science, particle physics and MRI technology. 

With your help, we're giving the Kickstarter community the opportunity to be the first ever people to own one of these by producing an exclusive Kickstarter only edition of the Halitron™, so that you too can experience its mesmerizing effects and experiment at home with this unique gadget.

Design

The design has evolved over the years, increasingly becoming both more precise and user friendly. When Max first started the focus was in proving a theory that many people had said was impossible to prove. After Max created a prototype that proved it was possible he then worked with Isis Innovation, the University of Oxford's commercialisation company, through their SME Smart IP Scheme to develop the Halitron further. They then teamed up with a local design and engineering consultancy, Oxford Product Design, to create a design that is even easier for people to use. 

Reaching our goal on Kickstarter means that we can take the design to the next stage where it can be designed to be flatpacked and shipped out to customers for home assembly so that you too can enjoy hours of experimentation with the Halitron™. We will create a gadget that looks great on anyone's desk and will really get people talking! 

Manufacture

We plan to optimize the design to enable (as far as reasonably possible) for each component to be produced via low cost CNC machining and low volume tooling. The initial prototype used standard sized magnets commonly available online (ours were from first4magnets), but additional developments will use custom sizes which will unlock further possibilities of size and performance. We then hope to assemble the Halitron™ here in Oxford, England. 

What will your money be used for?

Your support will help us to refine the Halitron™to create an adjustable design that meets all the necessary approvals standards and can be shipped for home assembly, so that you can create your own unique experiments. 

Additionally your support will let us purchase more equipment so that Max can create further evolutions of his design and bring some of his other magnetic inventions to market, as well as a range of accessories for the Halitron™.

Warnings 

Halitron™ is not a children's toy. The Halitron™ is a scientific device that uses large, powerful magnets. These magnetic fields could interfere or damage some electronic equipment such as mobile phones, televisions, magnetic bank cards, computers and pacemakers etc. It is therefore very important to keep the Halitron™ well away from any of these items and electrical products.

Additional Money Raised

If we achieve more than our goal this will enable us to continue to further develop the Halitron™, with different variants of design and potentially a miniaturised version. We are also looking to develop a range of compatible accessories including Harrigan launch spinners, laser pen holders,and illuminators for use in the dark.

If this project ends up being really successful then any funds raised will also be used in researching suitable commercial applications. Kickstarter represents the continuation of a journey that has already lasted for several years, and we are excited to see how the next stages will unfold together with this new community behind us.

Risks and challenges

Product launches always come with risks, but by partnering with Oxford Product Design and Isis Innovation, the University of Oxford's commercialisation company, we believe we’re well placed to deal with any unforeseen setbacks. We want to be honest with our backers and currently have assessed the potential risks as:

- This product is NOT A CHILDREN'S TOY. We plan to encase or encapsulate the magnets in order to minimize any problems and safety concerns.
- The strong permanent magnets used create powerful fields which could affect pacemakers or electrical equipment. All warning logos and disclaimer statements will be made clear on the Halitron™ packaging.
- Packaging and shipping of magnets is complicated, but our tests indicate that by supplying the unit flat packed, the fields can be minimized and the magnets can be packaged safely and securely.This may have an impact on the industrial design of the Halitron™.
- CE certification is a time consuming process, over which we have little control.
- We have some aggressive yet realistic cost-down targets in order to achieve a competitive manufacturing cost. This may end up effecting the final aesthetic of the product and materials used in manufacturing.
