My name is Julie Choo and I’m writing and designing the book
“THE STRATEGY JOURNEY: TRANSFORM YOUR BUSINESS IN THE DIGITAL AGE".
# This book isn't like most business books or text books. Its full of illustrations so you can read and experience all of the stories and case studies in it via the many comic book like images. As a techie and former coder who has move into business strategy and design as well as worked for big banks in Fintech for a while, I have tried to blend both my left and right brain to bring you this unique book, that will also cover some really interesting trends and technologies from AI (artificial intelligence) and blockchain to Smart Cities and Autonomous Cars.
#The case studies in this book include many of my own experiences, as well as the experiences from numerous expert co-creators who are industry experts in their own right spread over 80 years plus more. We've put this book together to demystify how to apply the right strategies to your business in the modern digital age to help you create lot of business WINs in the game of business.
THE MISSION and how this came about
My mission is to provide a guidance system and framework to businesses of all shapes and sizes, so that they have the tools and techniques to help themselves survive, grow and thrive in the fast changing digital ecosystem that we all live in today.
I want to reduce all that wasted opportunity out there and reduce those horrible statistics that state that:
"Only 50% of small businesses make it past the first 5 years"
"$109million for every $1bilion is lost due to project failure" in corporates.
When I was a little kid, my father lost everything risking it all to become a successful entrepreneur, so I really hate seeing so much money being wasted after not having a lot when I was young.
I've also work on many projects where despite all my efforts, I couldn't prevent the waste from happening, so I decided I wanted to do something about that. Haven't seen some good one, and having driven real results i the good ones, I wanted to reduce and eliminate all those bad ones.
NB: I'd not advocating that you shouldn't fail. Failure can be a good thing if you learn from it and CHANGE and IMPROVE. It's great that we all experiment and prototype new things and be creative, entrepreneurial and innovate.
What I want to do, is to really help all business owners, leaders and workers out there, who put in the dedication and commitment to their work, in many cases taking risks and making sacrifices, to succeed and feel proud of their achievements, love their work and what they do, whether they are in small business or startups, or in a large corporate.
YES - in all the uncertainty and waste out there - if you have a structured guidance system and framework to help you - you can do amazing things and succeed in making your business or the one you work in, deliver amazing things too and in doing so provide value and succeed.
With this Kickstarter I will bring my mission to life with my book, THE STRATEGY JOURNEY, which will introduce my framework for mastering the 5 stages of any business’ journey. I will explain WHY knowledge of how THE STRATEGY JOURNEY works can make the difference between success and failure, WHAT value the framework brings, and HOW to apply it to create business success.
The framework and all the tools and techniques within these 5 models covered in the book, is based on my 15+ years of experience helping businesses including global multinationals and big banks and more recently tech startups and even my local cafe.
And as I said before, I'm not on this mission alone, as I've founded a community of co-creators who will provide their expertise too, as well as their own success stories and lessons learnt to highlight HOW the 5 models in the book actually work, including many case studies too. I will be working with co-author Graham Christison and illustrator Dana Adnan to make this book real.
So why this Kickstarter and what's in it for you?
Firstly, I'm launching this Kickstarter, alongside my Co-creator Community, to put together the ONE book you need on business strategy. Some books only cover one aspect of your journey as a business, others are dry and wordy, others tell you what strategy is but not how to execute it. And I should know, I've read most of them, and I'm sure you have too.
THE STRATEGY JOURNEY is a practical, illustrated how-to guide to show you not just what THE STRATEGY JOURNEY is but how to create and execute your own for your business, giving you the edge in the digital age. It glues all the strategies and tactics in all these other books as well as having its own new disruptive method with lots of tools and templates for you to use to help you with implementation and execution. Its goes into the HOW, WHERE and WHEN, not just the WHAT.
YOU DON'T NEED TO READ 10 DIFFERENT BOOKS. JUST THE ONE.
And secondly, I need our help to get it finished. I'm several chapters into the the book already so making good progress with much of it completed, but getting all of these case studies is proving to be more work than I could have funded on my own, and the printing costs of a full color illustrated book of this quality is also a lot more than expected.
I could have gone down the traditional publishing route having spoken to a few publishers to get the printing part sorted, but their business and operating models means that I actually need to guarantee and pre-buy my own books, which was challenging to fund and finance already, and I still have to spend a lot of time, effort and my own money to put all those real practical case studies together that I want everyone to have access to.
I've been doing a lot of research speaking with people, and everyone wants these CASE STUDIES. Real ones of real companies both big and small as that is what's missing.
These are just some of our sample case studies. I need your help to help me finish this journey so I can build all these case studies and more for you.

There is a strong emphasis on the customer journey and the role of the VALUE MODEL in business transformation too. This should be the main drive of change and all the activities that are carried out in the Operating Model of a business, not just the business model (or Commericial Model as I'd like to call it). It's all about being customer-centric first and then everyone else comes from delivering customer value.

Why is THE STRATEGY JOURNEY different?
My co-creators and I have searched high and low for a book that brings together every stage of THE STRATEGY JOURNEY. We can't find it. Simply because, it doesn't yet exist. With your help, we are bringing that book to print and digital format too.
We want to help businesses look at every stage of what they do and help them build and execute strategies to get them to the next level.
And unlike other books that don't go enough into the HOW part especially HOW to get your people and customers working for you, alongside the latest and greatest technology, THE STRATEGY JOURNEY will show you how to combine it all, both hearts and minds, as well as building assets and grow, all together in one book.
It isn't just the content of the book that will be different. We're working on the format of the book too.
The book will be full colour and illustrated giving you a full story-telling component to the practical tips and advice of THE STRATEGY JOURNEY.
My commitment to this story-telling and illustration in the book is one of the reasons for this campaign, I want to ensure the content is an engaging as possible to help you make use of it throughout your Strategy Journey.
How will this project be achieved?
I'm the lead author the book having already completed just under 50% of the expected 275+ pages.
I'll be supported by a core team including Graham Christison my co-author, Laura Winton, who will lead research, and Dana Adnan who is responsible for all these amazing illustrations. The design work that I have been putting into this book so far working with Dana is taking up a lot of time as we want these images to help us tell the stories in the book. This is not going to be one of those wordy books you dread to read. It will read like a comic book with stories that are interesting and images that bring it all to life.
Don't forget there is an amazing group of expert co-creators who are all experts in valuation of companies, design thinking, business coaching, leadership, and strategic management, as well as digital technologies including blockchain, AI, self-driving cars, big data and more.
Interviews will be performed with a variety of professionals from within the industry, ranging from juniors to seniors and from industry, academia, government, start-ups, vendor technology companies and consultancies. Whenever possible these will be video recorded so the content can be further re-purposed. The book will be edited and published by Rethink Press.
Rethink Press is an independent hybrid publisher, working mainly with entrepreneurs, business owners, coaches and consultants to get their business or self-help book written and published to the highest standard. I've contacts all over the world too, who are keen to help publicize and endorse this project. Furthermore, I'll be publicising the book on both of my websites and when I speak at events all over the world.
What is the time-line/ schedule?
- 20 November - Kickstarter campaign runs for 30-days.
- January - funds are received.
- February to May – interviewing and write up - plus early chapters start to ship to you in digital format.
- May to June - publishing and editing
- End of June - draft digital copies of the full book shared with all kickstarter backers.
- August+ - signed copies start to ship out.

Risks and challenges
Every project can face risks and challenges. Writing a book of this kind that includes co-creators and a community might create delays. Some case studies involving interviews - even when templates are used - may take longer than expected, as it can be difficult to schedule time with different experts and business leaders who are all very busy. And with the book so heavily illustrated, the creative process in designing the book (which I do myself) while working with illustrator Dana Adnan (based in Austin Texas) who provides the most amazing illustrations can also take longer than expected to get things just right.
I'm confident that the community I'm building are committed to the project and I've shared the timelines with those that want to be involved. I have also hired a lead researcher in the form of Laura Winton to assist me. And recently, co-author Graham Christison, an expert and thought leader in his own right has now joined me to dive into the operating model and technology sections of the book as well as covering Fintech with me.
Bringing the book to completion also needs effective project management and support. This will be obtained via the hybrid publishers, Rethink Press, who will be guiding me. Writing a book isn't for everyone. Few can do it. But, being used to writing, and having already completed several courses on the same or similar topics that have been commissioned by several leading universities and education institutes, as well as being a strong project manager who's focused on the end result - with your support I'll achieve this.
The production process takes between 6 and 12 weeks. Rethink Press will support me by sending proof copies of edits, typesets and covers throughout the production process. My response will be swift, which will enable the book to run to schedule. I’ll keep everyone updated if I need to adjust deadlines, and I’ll be transparent at every step.
And the great news is that I have some early customers wanting the framework and training too, so I am committed to completing the book as part of this plan in order to service them.
