About this project
Our next goal! Scroll down to the next section to read about our first Stretch Goal.
This Kickstarter is to fund the transfer of half of my over 200 research videos from numerous cassette formats to digital media. These research tapes were taken by me, Sahra C Kent, an ethnologist specializing in the study of Egyptian Dance. The tapes contain footage from my six-year stay in Cairo, Egypt while I was researching my Master's Thesis and from my numerous subsequent research trips to Egypt.
Once the footage is transferred to digital media, dancers and other enthusiasts will be able to subscribe to the the Journey Through Egypt Dance Archive and receive weekly videos with raw footage and commentary in both written and audio form.
By bringing this raw footage directly to you, in easily digestible chunks to fit into your busy schedule, the Journey Through Egypt Dance Archive will help bring you closer to the roots of your dance a little bit more every week. Understanding the roots of our dance, and the culture of the place that helped shape it into what it is today is essential to any dancer, and what better way to get to know these roots, and this culture, than through documented video straight from the source.
*Completion of the Journey Through Egypt course will not be necessary to become a member of the Journey Through Egypt Dance Archive.
Now that we've hit our funding goal, it's time to talk about what comes next! Below you'll see our stretch goals for this project. Stretch goals are new funding goals that trigger more things to happen to the benefit of everyone involved in the project.
In addition to what's listed, each stretch goal will also help us fund the creation of the rewards for everyone, because as there are more backers, we will need to produce more rewards as well.
Remember, nothing can happen without your help!
Donate & spread the word far and wide, and together we can accomplish anything!
All the tapes will be transferred & all artists are getting paid!
If you donated at $100.00 or above you now get a 1 year membership instead of 6 months.
All backers will receive one full tape of raw footage, we will be accepting questions that we will answer over live broadcast. The talk will be recorded and distributed to all backers.
We have opened up a new tier : Farah. This allows for 10 more slots in an exclusive Kickstarter only lecture. All participants will also receive a recording of the lecture and Q&A sessions.
Every Backer who has donated at $50.00 and above will receive a digital copy of this book for no additional cost upon it's release.
If you donated a any of the tiers below $50.00 and would like to purchase the book at a highly discounted rate, please add $15.00 to your pledge to receive a copy.
MET!! On my next trip to Egypt I will (for the first time) be able to have professional quality sound and video for my interviews!
These videos will be interspersed with transferred research footage for the JtE Dance Archive!
During my time in Egypt, I have not only taken hundreds of hours of research video, but also hundreds upon hundreds of photos. And now they're going to be transferred as well!
Many of these photos are of the Moulids, Zeffas, and other events that I have had the joy of attending while in Egypt. Just as there is no better descriptor of movement than video, these pictures are worth their thousand words in the traditions they depict.
These research photos are also stored in bins around my home and storage unit. Having these photos transferred in high quality will allow me to share these with you through the JtE Dance Archive's weekly service as well. Every so often, instead of a weekly video we'll change up the format and provide a small gallery of research photos that are organized and explained for you.
Money raised until the $20,000 dollar mark will go towards the production of more rewards (as there are a lot of backers!) but, will more importantly be going towards the initial payments of a translator for the videos that are being transferred.
More information on this will be available through the update coming later today!
You need this information. We need this information. Our dance form needs research like this to be documented so that it can be passed on, and that can't happen if the tapes disintegrate. Due to the nature of the medium, tapes degrade over time, losing their magnetic properties. The playback quality suffers, with problems like static, noise, and tracking issues. This often leads to the tape being completely unplayable.
Currently, I have no way to back up the tapes. If anything happened to my home, they would be lost forever. By creating a digital archive, backups of this irreplaceable footage can easily be stored for future generations.
Asking for enough to transfer all the tapes is a bit of a lofty goal, so to make it more reasonable I've decided that we will start with half of the tapes, hoping that over time we will raise enough to transfer the remaining tapes. The first stretch goal also involves raising enough money to transfer the rest of the tapes, so if the community is generous enough there will be even more footage available to everyone!
The good news is there are over 200 tapes to transfer. Each is filled with priceless recorded history that cannot ever be replaced.
The bad news is there are over 200 tapes to transfer! I cannot do this alone. I need your contribution to keep this detailed record of our dance alive and usable by anyone who wants it.
I'm willing to put in the work, I just need the funds, and that's where you come in. Anything that you can donate is helpful.
Can't donate? Don't worry, you can still play a huge part in our success. Share our campaign with your friends, your students, your teachers, strangers on the street, anyone and everyone you think might be interested in a service like the Journey Through Egypt Dance Archive.
I can't do this without your help.
I have spent the last 30 years extensively researching and studying the cultural and historical contexts of Egyptian dance. It is my passion to bring my learning about this subject to others of similar interests. Unfortunately, when one decides to take their study of Middle Eastern Dance (or Bellydance) to the roots of the dance in Egypt there are often thousands of roadblocks to learning the truth. Uneven misinformation along with a lack of written knowledge on the subject can confuse even the most savvy of researchers.
Back in 2008, I came up with a solution: Journey Through Egypt. A course that currently spans 4 levels, it seeks to educate anyone who is interested in the history & culture of bellydance in Egypt, along with introducing students to the myriad of other folkloric and performance dances that are practiced throughout the country.
As more and more students have taken Journey Through Egypt a new problem has been presented. Many dancers who complete the Journey Through Egypt course, or even those who have only just begun it – would like to learn more! Many take it upon themselves to begin researching on their own, and I acknowledge that this is a very difficult path to follow. Others choose to seek out more time with me, or other professionals of the field, to gain as much knowledge as they can. The problem is that I only have so much time, and with personal lessons, I'm only able to help one person at a time.
For backing our project there are plenty of rewards, varying from a computer wallpaper to tank tops, long sleeve shirts, custom henna Riqqs & more!
It's the first time a lot of these items are available, and the first time that I will be holding online lessons, so make sure to get in on the ground floor.
Below you'll find visual representations of all of the reward tiers.
After the tiers there are breakdowns of each of the individual rewards, including descriptions, pictures and more. If anything seems confusing that should clear it right up! If not, shoot me an e-mail and either I or my team will help out immediately!
Need help learning how to use Kickstarter? Scroll down to the bottom and see our "I'm In. How do I donate" section for more information on Kickstarter and how it works. Thank you in advance for your support!
Every backer donating above 1 dollar gains entry to the Journey Through Egypt Dance Archive. There are 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months available through the reward tiers.
In this program you will :
Here is an example of some of some (mostly) unedited footage from one of my trips to Nubia in 2004. This would be cleaned up & come with a lot of information on what you were seeing as part of the Journey Through Egypt Dance Archive.
After the Kickstarter is over memberships to this program will be 10 dollars per month, so make sure to sign up now while the price is HEAVILY discounted!
I expect that the scope of this group will expand dramatically as features are put in place, especially if we meet any of our stretch goals, but everything has to start somewhere!
Some of my glamour shots from my time in Egypt have been made into posters for various events. Now you can have a hi-res copy just for your computer background as a thank you for donating to our cause.
Everyone who backs this project will receive a hi-res computer wallpaper for their desktops, laptops, or tablets!
I am also the president of "Layali Yasmine Productions" ("Nights of Jasmine") an independent recording and distribution label for Egyptian music, Middle Eastern dance performance and instructional videos. And as president/owner I am happy to offer the three CD's recorded under that label from my time in Egypt, along with a compilation of Nubian music created under the Caravan Institute International: Music & Dance of Egypt Series.
For several of the reward tiers there is the option of receiving a digital download of one of these CD's, or even autographed physical copies. Below you will find each of the CD's and a description, after the campaign is over we will send out surveys asking which CD you would like to download or have mailed to you.

We have custom printed Journey Through Egypt shirts, both tank tops & long sleeves available as rewards. These will be the first run of JtE Shirts, and I couldn't be more excited.
These t-shirts will easily be some of the softest in your collection. They will also be printed with high quality water based ink. What does that mean? Not only is the printing process better for the environment, it creates designs that are soft to the touch and that won't crack and wrinkle as they age.
The pictures below are simply mockups of the final designs, and they may change some before final printing.
ADD ON PRICES :
These Nubian Scarves are handmade at the Nubian House Luxor in Egypt. Every JtE-4 my students and I visit the Nubianhouse to learn some of the traditions of the Nubians and to explore their weaving, pottery, and handcrafts rooms.
I often bring these scarves back from Egypt when I go for dancers that wish to help support the Nubianhouse and to have scarves handmade in Egypt. I am also wearing one in the main video!
To read more about the Nubianhouse, please read our blog post on them.
These scarves are available in almost all colors. When the Kickstarter is over we will request your top three choices and will do what we can to get you your first choice in color. These are to be added on to any tier below $500.00.
ADD ON PRICE :
Fellow bellydancers and friends have contributed to our rewards in such a magnificent way. In Journey Through Egypt, I break down Egypt into a series of "dance zones" each containing their own dance styles. Created specifically for our Kickstarter, you can see below the wonderful art representations of each of these dance styles.
Each print is available in a standard 11 x 17 size. Several tiers include your choice of prints.
You may also add any print to your pledge as an add-on. Each print is $15.00. After the Kickstarter concludes we will contact you to find out which print you selected.
These are available for a limited time only through Journey Through Egypt, so get them while you can!
Any combination of prints will make a wonderful educational and decorative addition to any office or studio space. Here are some of the prints displayed in my assistant's home office! (The other two are hanging elsewhere)*

There are only 10 of these available, so make sure to get them while you can!
For the first time ever, I will be hosting an online lecture, and what better way to start then with my wonderful Kickstarter Backers!
I will hold two sessions of this lecture, in order to accommodate for people's schedules. Each session will be 1 hour long plus a half hour to 1 hour Q & A and will have 10 seats available, allowing for a more intimate atmosphere, and to allow you all to ask any questions you may have during the allotted time.
The topic will be determined by you through a survey to be held after the kickstarter. Each person signed up for the lecture will also receive a recording of the lecture and the Q & A to follow.
The Riqqs used as the base for these gorgeous designs were brought back directly from Mohammed Ali street. Each Riqq ordered will be embellished with a henna design of our logo (as shown) by Debi Varvi the Henna Crone.
Debi will create 5 completely unique riqqs, as they will all be hand drawn and she never draws things the same way twice. The above is an example of the one my assistant ordered for herself!
There will only ever be 7 of these made (but my assistant and I already snagged two of them), so get yours while they last.
In these Choreography Critique I will work closely with you to help you achieve your vision for a choreography. From styles set in the Golden Age to any Egyptian Folkloric Style, I can help you hone your performance and choreography to give your dance that extra bit of polish.
These Critiques will take place online over Skype or a similar service and must be scheduled in July or August 2014. They will happen on Tuesdays during that time.
Due to limitations on my time, these are not available as add-ons at this time.
Another first for this campaign is the opening of my schedule for Private Lessons via Skype. Each lesson will be 1 hour long and we can work on whatever you feel would benifit your dance the most.
Choreo critique and guidance? Done. Working on the dance techniques of the Golden Age? Done. Just want to sit for an hour and pepper me with questions about a particular dance in Egypt? That's fine too.
All private lessons must be booked in July & August 2014 and will happen on Wednesdays. If you choose a tier that includes private lessons, we will contact you regarding scheduling once the campaign is complete.
Private lesson slots are limited, and therefore cannot be offered as an add-on at this time.
And last, but certainly not least, we have our final reward. For those of you willing to go above and beyond in helping with this project I would like to personally invite you to Riverside California to attend either JtE-1 or 2, whichever you prefer.* Airfare, lodging, and other travel expenses are not included.
Journey Through Egypt 1 will happen on July 26th through 28th in Riverside California. Visit the facebook event to learn more.
Journey Through Egypt 2 will happen on August 1st through 3rd, also in Riverside, California. Here is the link to that event page as well.
Whether it's your first time, or you're just back for a refresher, Journey Through Egypt always has new information for you. In each class we spend at least 20 hours learning about the different regional "dance zones", the people, the dances, and the traditions of Egypt.
* You must complete JtE-1 before you can take JtE-2.
Many of the rewards here can be added to your pledge if you would like extras, to buy them as gifts, or to get all of the poster prints.
To "add-on" to your pledge simply click manage my pledge and change the dollar amount you would like to donate (do not change your tier!). After the Kickstarter is finished we will send out surveys to see what extra items you added-on to your pledge.
Please consult the chart below for easy reference:
If you do not live in the United States, please add $15.00 to cover excess shipping costs (unless you have backed at a tier that already require shipping, in which case please add $5.00 for each additional item added-on)

Risks and challenges
There are several problems that may present themselves while we go about fulfilling this Kickstarter. Some of the tapes may be damaged beyond salvage (highly unlikely) and there may have been price increases in several of the services since the estimates were attained for the Kickstarter. There may also be delays longer than those assumed in the fulfillment of rewards
We've built a good buffer into our Kickstarter to cover any increases in price, or postage, that may have occurred in the time between estimate and fulfillment. This extra money can also go to helping tapes that need extra care to be processed.
We'll also be clear and transparent with our community from start to finish with any problems that arise that affect our backers and will ask opinions from them and let them know should anything make a big change in plans, such as delays in fulfillment.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
