FIGHT FOR SPACE is a feature length documentary film that explores the economic and cultural benefits of human space exploration, and examines the historical and political events that have led to the decline of human space exploration. FIGHT FOR SPACE presents viewpoints from Astronauts, politicians and staff, scientists, former NASA officials, commercial space entrepreneurs, and many other individuals in the space community. A complete list of interviewees is available at the bottom of this page.
HERE'S THE PROBLEM
Today, NASA is promoting a "Journey to Mars". They have nice graphics, and their PR team is doing a great job telling everyone how Orion is going to get to Mars in the 2030s. The reality is, there's no money for any of this. The Space Launch System is under funded, and cannot fly at any safe or continuous rate with the current NASA budget.
What is the solution? Does NASA need a budget increase? Or is there a different way to get into space? We explore these issues in Fight for Space.

WHY WE ARE MAKING THIS FILM
We know so little about our universe. We have barely scratched the surface of the Moon and Mars, there is so much more that can be done. New sciences can be developed, new businesses created, energy sources discovered, the frontier of space is limitless. We are making this film to help push the people of the world and the decision makers that govern them to look up at the stars instead of at our feet.
- Finish the film by April-May 2015.
- Release to our backers and distribute rewards shortly after.
- Distribute film to all members of Congress to better educate them on space policy issues.
- Release all stock footage to the public by end of 2015.
WHAT WE NEED
Fight for Space is nearly complete, and we urgently need to raise an additional $80,000 to complete the film and get it released. Our goal is to get the film out to our supporters sometime around March-May 2015, show the film at limited theatrical screenings around the country, and have it ready for public television broadcast later this year. We need money for:
1. Post Production Technical Mix - Color Correction and Sound Mixing are an essential part of a good documentary, we need funding to have our film professionally mixed for television and theatrical release.
2. Musical Score - We need funding to produce an epic original score with both live orchestral and electronic elements. Composer pending.
3. Archival Footage - We must transfer a large amount of 35 and 16mm original film negatives from the National Archives and various presidential libraries to digital HD video. Additionally, we must pay for archival news footage to use in the film. This is a very expensive process and we need your help to get it done.
BONUS - If we are funded, all public domain footage that we have transferred from the National Archives, NASA, and other sources will be made freely available in it's source format online on a site such as Archive.org or similar video archival webpage. It is important that this footage be available to future documentary filmmakers around the world.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
In order for this project to be successful we are counting on your help to share this project on as many social media platforms as you can. We urge the use of Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Tumblr, Reddit, E-Mail, or just tell people about us! We have 20 days to complete this campaign, please post daily or weekly about our project so all your friends know about us! However you communicate, please share this project with all!
Fight for Space has reiceved an official letter of interest from several PBS stations, and if fully funded Fight for Space is likely to air on public television stations around the country.
WHY DO WE NEED MORE MONEY?
The common question is, why do you need more money when you already had a successful Kickstarter back in 2012? The answer is, Space is complicated, and movies are expensive to make. Many of our estimated costs went over, and the project grew beyond what we had originally anticipated by interviewing more people and exploring issues that we had never thought of. For example, we anticipated doing about 15 interviews with the project started, we ended doing more than 50. That was necessary to get the most complete and truthful information, it was of the utmost importance that this story be told correctly.
As referenced in the pie chart above, every cent gets spent on the movie, the fundraising fees, and the Kickstarter rewards to you. The choice was made early on to make a first class documentary film about our space program, rather than a second class film that doesn't cover all the issues.
Behind the scenes reel of our travels from 2012-2014 while filming Fight for Space.
We have tried to provide a simple selection of donation tiers to choose from. Choose from a digital download with no strings attached, to physical copies of the film, a poster, t-shirt, and more.
Our film asks, why in over 40 years haven't we returned to the Moon, or sent humans onto Mars? We explore issues and we bring problems to light that always are not the most positive things to talk about. But it's important to remember that NASA has been the only organization to send humans to the Moon, or a rover to Mars, or do many of the exciting things that make up our space program today. We love NASA, what it stands for, and all that it has done.
So I want to say thank you to NASA, to the NASA workers, the astronauts, the clerical staff, the engineers, the political staff in DC, everyone who makes NASA run. Not everyone agrees how things should be done, but amazing things have been done, we just want to see more of it.
Also, thank you for visiting this Kickstarter page. I hope you have the opportunity to contribute and see our film later this year.
Risks and challenges
If this Kickstarter is not funded our film will still be released, but the quality of the release will be sub-standard. We will be forced to use low quality video, the film will not be professionally mixed, and we will not be able to have quality original music to go with the imagery on screen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
