About

The details: Canteen magazine has commissioned 16 lauded art photographers to shoot 16 brilliant authors. Each photographer will offer a singular interpretation of fashion-magazine glam. And each writer will respond to the question “What’s the hottest thing you’ve ever read?”

Why is this important? Writers have lost their place as cultural heroes. Instead, we celebrate a numbing parade of overpaid and undertalented actors, musicians, and athletes. Ridiculous amounts of money, publication real estate, and TV time are squandered to promote The Bachelors and the Kardashians and whoever will soon rise vapidly to take their place.

Writers don’t get such crass and ubiquitous promotion. But why can’t they at least try to compete with pop-culture stars on the same terms? Let’s promote novelists as sexy and fabulous! Let's hype those who actually deserve it!

Expenses: All writers and photographers have agreed to participate free of charge (everyone's excited about this idea). But professional-quality photo shoots are very expensive. Money raised via Kickstarter will go directly toward the costs of these shoots and toward printing Issue Seven of Canteen, which will contain this project. Everyone who works on Canteen, from our publisher to our editors to our slush pile readers, is an unpaid volunteer.

Rewards for donating? Yes! Look to the right. Plus Canteen is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, so all donations are tax-deductible, minus the value of the donation reward.

Timing? The project has already begun, but we have run out of money to complete it. With proper funding, it will be finished by early May. The results will be included in Canteen Issue Seven (due out late May 2011), and we hope to exhibit them at galleries in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
