About this project
UPDATED NEW STRETCH GOAL
Thanks to a very generous donor, we reached our baseline goal in less than 24 hrs. We are now shooting for $3,000 to help fund all of Phase 1
Maker Education in our School
Friends of Peirce is a 501(c)(3) non profit all-volunteer organization in Chicago that supports our local Chicago Public School, Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies. We raise the funding for facilities, tools, knowledge, and mentorship needed to help everyone rediscover the joy of making things!
Peirce is on a mission to provide our community students with the STEM skills to meet the evolving needs of the job market or succeed as a startup. To accomplish this, we are building on the existing student interest in Robots.
Students in K-4th grade will be exposed to computational thinking with programmable toy robots like Dash & Dot and Spheros.
5th and 6th graders will explore complex problem solving using Lego robots.
7th-8th graders will work on capstone design challenge projects.
As an International Baccalaureate school, our teachers have a deep expertise in a variety of fun and engaging projects and hands-on making activities.
Over the last few years we successfully implemented what is called a 1:1 computer strategy, which means each student has their own laptop or tablet to use during the school day. Our teachers led this technology foundation approach.
We believe digital fabrication is a natural next step in our evolution.
What is our timeline?
Phase 1 - Summer-Fall 2017 - Grades 5-6 - $3,000 goal
Phase 2 - Fall-Winter 2017 - Grades 7-8
Phase 3 - Winter-Spring 2018 - Grades K-4
Why are we launching a Kickstarter?
We are so excited about this mission and to bring it to the maker community on kickstarter. Please come along with us and help the students at Peirce join the maker community!
We are seeking to raise the funds to make phase 1 of our transformation happen. A pledge of any amount helps. Sharing our project can also make a big impact.
For this first phase, our 8th graders will build a mobile maker cart for our school to learn some basic carpentry skills and to leave their legacy. We will also purchase Lego robotics kits to be shared between middle grade classrooms using the cart.
We are grateful for your help in bringing this project to life. In addition to our heartfelt thanks, we are offering a variety of unique rewards at different pledge levels. Whether useful or just cool, we also hope these rewards will serve as an ongoing reminder of your support for and your partnership with Peirce.
We'll shout out your name in abundant gratitude to 500 of our friends and followers! Get a social media boost from Peirce!
You get a Peirce Maker sticker to proudly display on your laptop, your car or any other place you want to show your Maker school pride!
A personalized selfie-video from one of our students. This video will be posted on our Facebook page for all of the internet world to see.
Our striking 2017 logo will catch the eye of envious makers and let them know you support one of the coolest maker schools in the country.

About our School
Helen C. Peirce School is a Pre-K through eighth grade campus. Opened in 1915, the school now includes the original facility and an annex that was built in 1999. The annex houses a state-of-the-art library/media center, computer lab, music room, art room, science laboratory, cafeteria, and seventeen classrooms. In 1993 the school was selected to participate in the Chicago Board of Education Specialty School Program and was renamed the Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies.
Peirce is a neighborhood school drawing most of its student population from the Edgewater and Andersonville Communities. Peirce is considered one of the best neighborhood schools on the North Side of Chicago and is a newly Authorized International Baccalaureate World School for the Middle Years Programme in collaboration with Nicholas Senn High School (Grades 6th-10th).
Peirce has a dynamic, innovative, and well-educated staff with an impressive nine National Board Certified Master Teachers, a Golden Apple Winner and a Kohl McCormick Early Childhood award winning teacher. Peirce teachers are committed to providing a first-rate education to all students.
About our Partners
We are fortunate to be part of a national program with MakerEd and Google to bring maker education to schools. Thanks to the help from the Digital Youth Network at DePaul University, we have been able to work on a strategy to bring making to our students at Peirce.
Risks and challenges
We want to create a safe maker space for our students and will manage the risks inherent with hands on activities using existing teaching methods and badges to certify when students are knowledgeable and ready to use tools.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
