We've found that iPhones are becoming an essential piece of equipment both on and off the golf course where they serve as a terrific GPS, scorecard, and stat tracker. We found this created a problem: how do you keep your golf accessories accessible and protect your iPhone from being scratched? You could put your iPhone in one pocket and everything else in the other, but then it's tough to dig through and find a small ball mark or divot repair tool while walking up to the green.
The Mark is the first iPhone case designed to hold your golf tools and protect your phone while playing a round. Allowing you to easily store the ball mark and divot repair tool. The tools can easily be removed from the case when you need them with one hand while the case remains in your pocket.
The case has two powerful magnets that securely hold the ball mark and divot repair tool in place. With a simple slide of the thumb, the tools will release and slide up off the case into your hand ready for action as you approach the green. When you are done using the tools, just slip them back into your pocket and the magnets will guide the tools onto the case. A very satisfying snap will let you know they are safely attached. It's that easy.
The MARK is designed with several key features. The first and most important, is a highly protective case that shields your iPhone from typical usage while on the course. The case wraps around the front to protect the screen while in a cart cup holder or placed on the snack bar at the turn. Inside the MARK, you will find soft felt that will provide the right amount of protection from scratching and enough resistance to snuggly hold the case on your phone.
The second feature is the divot repair tool and ball mark holding mechanism. These are recesses in the backside of the MARK that allow the tools to be placed against the case and flush with the top. This will discourage the tools from being snagged while being taken in or out of your pocket. On the inside of the case, two powerful magnets have been placed to secure the tools to the backside of the MARK. These magnets will not be visible and are covered by the felt, keeping it away from your phone's back glass.
There is nothing about THE MARK that isn't original and exclusive to American Utility. The case itself is made of very durable, high quality, injection molded, ABS plastic. It's texture is faintly rough to allow for better grip and provide a mildly soft touch. The recessed areas will be given a smooth, polished finished to add contrast. We are very excited to offer the case in two colors, white and black, so you'll be able to decide which looks best on your iPhone.
We've designed a custom case with a look all its own, but didn't stop there. The divot repair tool and ball mark both feature a matching and distinctive '+' logo. The tools are made of high quality, hardened tool steel and powder coated with contrasting, bold colors to increase visibility, usability and comfort. If you prefer a sleek monochrome look, we will also offer the tools in black and white.
As a Kickstarter backer, you will get to completely customize your MARK with any of the options available. First you pick your case color, black or white. Then, you choose a color for the divot repair tool and ball mark. We are currently offering white, black, blue, red and yellow. You can add additional tools in any of these colors to your order.
The ability to customize your color combinations will not be available once our funding period ends as we will be offering pre-set color combinations for retail sale. This is your chance to be the first to get the best Golf + iPhone accessory and have it customized to your preferences.
If we exceed our goal and reach $125,000 in funding, we will add 3 additional tool colors for you to choose. This would give a total of 8 tool colors and 2 case colors resulting in 16 possible combinations, only here on Kickstarter.
We are just as concerned with how and where our products are made as we are with the details that we design into them. That’s why we decided to go the extra length to design, manufacture, procure and assemble everything right here in the states. This allows us the ability to keep tighter control on the entire process and respond quickly when the need arises. We are very proud of this product. It’s meticulously designed, functions great and will be a joy to use on the course.
We've come pretty far without outside funding creating 6 case prototypes and 4 tool prototypes. We have met with our vendors for design reviews to ensure that the MARK will be manufacturable, as specified and in a timely manner. Giving us the confidence we need to move forward and making sure that the MARK will meet your expectations. We have solid estimates for materials, tool production and assembly. We also have a great handle on lead-in, production and shipping time estimates. All this preparation and information means we've collected the necessary elements for a successful project.
So here is where you fit in! We need to manufacture several items to allow mass production of the MARK:
Additionally, we need to raise enough money to place our first order in the minimum quantities required:
Here is a breakdown of where your money will go once we are funded.
We are Drew Miller, Greg Zucal, and Greg Webster, three engineers with industrial design experience, motivated to design high quality useful products. Our backgrounds include design/manufacturing, reliability modeling, software development, providing civil site layouts, and project management. Together we have over 15 years of design experience ranging from bus/train seating to automated micro spot welding robots. While our focus has been with industrial products, we are excited to join forces and bring The Mark to the Kickstarter community.
Webster and Zucal first collaborated in high school building a floating arm trebuchet with which they successfully hit their physics teacher with numerous water balloons (that was the assignment, we swear). Zucal and Drew were paired up as college roommates and it quickly became apparent that they shared an affinity for golf, well designed consumer products, and the occasional craft beer.
Webster is the 'tinkerer' in the group. He has been professionally designing parts that go into industrial products for 10 years. He has built his own CNC wood router and CNC milling machine which he used most recently to construct a home built 'claw machine' arcade game. Drew is the artist. He has a love for the visual arts, especially photography, typography and graphic design. Using the golden ratio, color theory and perspective, he began developing his skills as a photographer and product designer. A gallery of selected pieces of work can be found here. Zucal has been the idea man. He is driven to solve problems with innovative and elegant solutions. Together, the trio's common desire to create useful American Made products has brought them together to form American Utility and design The Mark.
