I first started developing my wooden bow ties many months ago after being turned off by the available options on the marketplace. Almost every design felt physically flat, with no contour. I was intent on developing a design that was comfortable to wear, stylish, and most of all, emulated the three dimensional qualities of classic, fabric bow ties.
This is where I developed the Crooked Branch Bow Tie. I went through countless prototypes, fabrics, and woods until I was satisfied with this design. The tie is smooth to the touch, rich in color, and adjustable to make comfort standard on every piece. It comes in three woods: Walnut, Cherry, and Maple.
History of Crooked Branch Studio
I have been crafting and selling wood products since I was 12. In 2013, I opened Crooked Branch Studio on Etsy, and since then, my business has done very well. However, I have always been hindered by output. Crafting every item by hand is time consuming and laborious.
When I first started making wooden bowties about 6 months ago, I ran into the same problems. I currently hand-shape every bow tie on the belt sander, but this process makes achieving a consistent form difficult. I am working on bringing my design into Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software to standardize the shape of every bow tie. With the help of Kickstarter, I will then buy an X-Carve CNC machine, and production will start. This will enable me to create consistency in my product which is crucial for taking my bow ties into a retail space.
Maple, Walnut, and Cherry are all North American hardwoods that are locally sourced. I have chosen select boards for their character, color, and consistency.
Finish- All bow ties are finish sanded by hand up to 0000 steel wool. They are then oiled with food-safe mineral oil and waxed in food-safe beeswax.
Strap- 100% Polyester ribbon, machine sewn by hand, with black powder coated clasps

Risks and challenges
From my experience running Crooked Branch Studio, I have gained lots of experience in crafting, finishing, packing, and shipping products. However, there are certainly a few new challenges. For one, assembly of the CNC could take longer than expected. However, I have access to a CNC machine at my school and could produce the bow ties there if I were unable to get mine working in time.
Also, International shipping is new to me, but I have researched shipping costs to many countries and have settled on a $10 surcharge for shipping out of the U.S. Lastly, I obtain all of my fabrics from reclaimed sources so supply is limited. However, if I am unable for some reason to get the fabric shown in the Kickstarter on every tie, I will find a comparable fabric and communicate this substitute to the backers. Should any person not like it, they will be offered any of the other bow tie options or a refund.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
