About

Play Pallies: A Playdate Program for Kids with ADHD

Does your child with ADHD:

  • Not have a lot of friends?
  • Have difficulty keeping friends?
  • Not get invited to playdates and parties?

Children with ADHD can often have difficulty maintaining and sustaining friendships.  Many children with ADHD are impulsive, which makes it difficult for them to wait their turn.  They may also have difficulty with listening, blurting out, sharing, and being empathetic.  It's not your child's fault!  These skills just don't come naturally to children with ADHD.

That's why My Little Villagers is kickstarting Play Pallies, a playdate program for children with ADHD.  How great would it be for your child to have a friendship with another child who is just like them, a child with ADHD who truly understands them with the same struggles (and gifts) of ADHD!

Play Pallies is a program that allows parents to set playdates up for their children (ages 3 - 17) with ADHD with other children with ADHD in their area in a secure and safe way.  The program would also include tips for building social skills, advice for parents on becoming their child's "Friendship Coach," and suggestions for ADHD friendly playdate activities and games.

How would it work?

1. Parents sign their child up for the program and include their child’s first name, sex, age, location (city, state), and hobbies/interests. Parents would also include their email address and/or phone number (whichever they prefer and are comfortable with sharing). This information would be posted in a secure Play Pallies list that only Play Pallies participants can view on My Little Villagers' website. (A password would be required to view the page and the password is given to Play Pallies participants ONLY.)

2. Parents can view the Play Pallies list anytime and search by city and state for a potential Play Pally for their child. When they find a good Play Pally match for their child, the parent contacts the other parent and sets up the playdate in a safe public setting, such as a nearby park or at a local library.

3. The children have their playdate and hopefully have a wonderful time!  While enjoying spending time with their new playmate, the children are forming a friendship with someone who is just like them.  They are able to talk to and identify with someone who understands the struggles (and gifts) of having ADHD, which can be very therapeutic.  Without realizing it, the children are also practicing their social, sharing, and cooperation skills, working on controlling their impulsivity and emotions, and learning how to be a great friend.

4. Play Pallies also works as a support group for parents of children with ADHD.  While the programs goal is to help children with ADHD form friendships with other children with ADHD in their area, it also helps parents connect with other parents of children with ADHD.  (I know parents of children with ADHD can be such a Godsend, because they are understanding, nonjudgemental, and compassionate.  It takes a BIG village to raise a child with ADHD and believe me, other parents of children with ADHD are definitely people you want in your village!)

Risks and challenges

Privacy and Security:

Parents interested in Play Pallies might be reluctant to put their contact information on the internet, which is completely understandable.

Please rest assured that your information will be available to Play Pallies participants ONLY and it can only be located on a password protected page on My Little Villagers' website.

You can include either your phone number or email address, whatever you are comfortable with for the purpose of setting up playdates. Home addresses are not posted, but your city is.

Safety:

Parents interested in Play Pallies might be worried about safety.

Please be smart and only meet for playdates in public places, like a local park or library and be present. Do not give out your home address or any personal information.

With time, your child will develop a friendship with their Play Pally and you will most likely develop a friendship with their parent. It is entirely up to you if you wish to share your home address and/or any personal information with them, but please be smart with what you chose to share.
