About this project
I'm making a new type specimen book to display some of my best new typefaces. Watch the video above to learn more about the Travelling Font Salesman typographic font display book.
This project is fully funded, but we could still use some extra support to help make an even better book for you.
So, to entice new backers and celebrate our success so far, we've created a new Bonus Reward Font that will be sent to every backer at any level. Read all about the new font in UPDATE #4.
Check out the 20 new fonts that are in this new typographic book and help back my Travelling Font Salesman Kickstarter today!
My name is Chank Diesel and I'm a font designer and a travelling font salesman.
I'm making a new book with designer Anne Ulku and writer Peter Hajinian. It's a typographically dramatic mini-novella. A book zine thing. A typographic novel. I don't know exactly what to call it. It's kinda "different." So let's just say it's a book. And I need your help to publish it.
I make fonts and I sell them to designers, developers and publishers all over the world. My fonts have been used by big, great big corporations, startup small businesses, and also some of the most respected non-profit agencies in the country. Books, websites, packaging, movie titles, billboards… fonts are everywhere! And the hundreds of fonts I've made are seen worldwide by millions of people daily.
I wanted to find a distinctive way to introduce my new fonts to the world and celebrate some of my best work from the last few years, so that's why I'm making a book. It's an impressive and inspirational design book, a celebration of the printed page. And it’s even entertaining to read. But I need your help to get it published.
Its main goal is to be an impressive type specimen book, showing a bunch of new display fonts in a variety of sizes and contexts. But it is not just a bunch of arbitrary words and letters, it is also a story of a guy who goes door-to-door across the country selling his wares and talking to people. You can read it straight from cover to cover and it is a good story about the places he goes and the people he meets.
--And it is more than that, too. It is all the fonts in the book! There are about 20 new fonts displayed in the book and they are all nearing completion and almost ready to release to the public. These are exciting new typefaces to help add more personality to your written words. 20 new OpenType fonts, surely there must be at least one in there that strikes a chord with you and might make a nice addition to your font library.
The book is all written. We're almost done designing it. It's almost ready to go to the printers. I think it's great typography book and it will be a precious artifact to hold in your hands soon.
You can get yourself a copy of the book. You can get yourself your favorite font from the book. You could get yourself a copy of the book and ALL of the 20 fonts used in it.
Get yourself some creative inspiration by adding some of these new typefaces to your design repertoire!
There’s a superextended font! There’s an extracondensed font! Both are totally timeless, utilitarian and useful. There’s a historic-revival font inspired by skyscraper architecture. There's a nice new geometry-inspired "heavy-lifting" font. There's a chromatic, multi-layerable, super-huge poster font full of tiny, delicate inlines. A street art font! A drunken but smart story-telling font! A pseudo-scientific sci-fi font that looks like it came from a galaxy far far away! There's a handwriting font that's full of action!
I hope there's one or more fonts in this collection that you'd like to use in your designs.
I hope you choose to pledge a few dollars and help my Travelling Font Salesman Kickstarter and get some great reward items for yourself.
Thanks for listening to my story.

"BUILDING A BETTER BOOK" STRETCH GOAL MET!
Wow, in addition to meeting our basic funding goal for this project, we've also met our stretch goals and can now confirm this first edtion of the book will be a HARDCOVER BOOK probably featuring some embossing or foilstamping on the cover, with HIGHER-QUALITY PAPER upgrade on every page, making a better book for everybody.
We've still got copies of the book available for you to pre-order by backing this project. All your support at any level is much appreciated.
thanks for helpin :)
Risks and challenges
A big challenge in this project is the potentially un-ending series of tweaks and refinements and kerning adjustments that can be part of the font-making and book-making process. But the fonts are good and the design of the book is solid and I'm confident we can complete it as "finished finished" and get it all ready for the printer by November 20. That could maybe get the book printed and done by the end of this year, but we're promising it by February next year just to be safe.
Another obstacle is relying on a printer to turn the book around as quickly as we need it. We have a reliable printer in line to do the job on schedule. The book will be designed, printed and bound in the USA, so there won't be any long shipping or customs delays involved. So barring some insane weather event that destroys the printing press, we should be good.
Staff is assembled and on-hand, ready to ship the book and art and fonts to you as quickly as possible once the pieces are all finished.
The fonts are almost all finished and could begin shipping to backers via email within the next few weeks.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
