As I write this, a soft roll of thunder unfolds while rain falls gently outside the window. It's perfect songwriting weather. The window is in the spare bedroom graciously being offered to me in the south Austin home of a friend of mine. This kindness and support is the kind of stuff I don't have to go into detail about here, really. I could just explain to you what this fundraiser is about. But because the acts of kindness and support I've experienced lately are the impetus for me being at a crossroads, I feel right about sharing it with you. It's this kind of genuine support, helping me be able to focus on my music, that has me sitting down for a good talking to with myself about how I'm gonna get on in this world. I'm deciding it comes down to the music, and I'm asking for your help to finish this CD that will move me and my music forward.
These are some of my best and most personal songs, along with my version of "No Expectations", a song written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. The two songs you hear in the video haven't even been mastered yet to get all the juju levels just right, and they already sound that good. Tim Lorsch is my producer and plays the strings on the record. He produced and played on my debut CD, and has performed/recorded with Kris Kristofferson, Ray Price, Mary Gauthier, Townes Van Zandt, Lucinda Williams, Rodney Crowell, Kevin Welch, Sam Baker, and other great artists. The band is also amazing and includes Mickey Grimm on drums; Ron de la Vega on bass; George Bradfute on guitars; Steve Conn on accordion; Mike Daly on steel guitar and dobro; Tim Lorsch on fiddles, cello, and mandolin; Gene Rabbai on organ; and guest artist, Anthony Crawford on pedal steel. Collectively, here's a sampling of just some of the artists these guys have recorded with: Sam Baker, Hayes Carll, Rodney Crowell, Dixie Chicks, Emmylou Harris, Allison Moorer, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Bonnie Raitt, Billy Joe Shaver, and Neil Young.
Two of the tracks were recorded by George Bradfute in his Nashville studio. The studio floor still has the colorful tile that was put in when legendary Nashville star, Jim Reeves owned the home. The rest of the tracking was recorded by Bradley Hartman at his studio in Franklin, TN. He's since moved back to Austin and now has a studio here, but we recorded some of the vocals at his little cabin outside of Austin by the San Gabriel river. Brad will also do the mixing and mastering. Brad has recorded and mixed many landmark records, including Emmylou Harris' "Elite Hotel" and "Luxury Liner", and Willie Nelson's "Stardust" and "Honeysuckle Rose". He also recorded/engineered records by Rosanne Cash, Billy Joe Shaver, Guy Clark, and Rodney Crowell.
This CD got started two years ago and is ready to be a reality, but it can't be a reality without your help. I simply do not have the means to get it finished and manufactured. The instruments and the vocals have been recorded, and the players and producer paid. It is this last stretch I need your help with:
Your contribution will go to the Mixing, Mastering, Graphic Design, Manufacturing/Duplication, Song Licensing (for the cover of the Rolling Stones song), the CDs and One Sheets/Bios for the mail-outs to Free-form American Roots and EuroAmericana Radio and Media, and the Postage and Packaging to get them to them, as well as the Postage and Packaging to get your CDs and Gifts to you, WITH MY GREATEST & MOST EXTREME GRATITUDE! All shipping costs are included in every package, no matter where you live. So to pay for all of that, I will need to raise $7300 to complete this record to bring the recordings out into the world and into your hands. This amount also includes Kickstarter's and Amazon's percentages.
$7300 is the minimum goal we have to meet just to get this CD finished and out into the world. The way your personal contribution through Kickstarter works is, if we don't make the goal, then your account doesn't get charged after all, and the project doesn't get funded and the CD doesn't get finished.WE ONLY HAVE 30 DAYS TO MAKE THE GOAL (and less depending on when you read this!). We can do this! With YOUR HELP (YES YOURS!), IT CAN HAPPEN. And AS SOON as you have supported my Kickstarter campaign, PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY, CO-WORKERS, - EVERYONE - that you have done so and SHARE THE LINK to my campaign and my Kickstarter *VIDEO. Please!!! Thank you! xoxoxo!!!
The goal of $7300 that I'm asking for your help with may sound like a lotta money. But that amount does not include adding background vocals to some of the songs - which I would love to have and which could happen IF WE EXCEED THE GOAL. Also on my wish list - (that could happen with your help!) - is being able to afford Radio Promotion and a Publicist, and Touring Costs to include at least a lead player to accompany me, or, if we don't exceed it by enough to pay for any of these things, then even a booklet in the CD packaging for the lyrics would be a sweet extra.
Other stuff I don't have to say and that might be weird and awkward, but I wanna say it anyway: When this record got started almost two years ago, I was doing contract/temp labor work. Placements were irregular, with bouts of unemployment. Sides of "life crises du jour" have been a steady serving since the record first began production, and so the CD got put on the back burner a lot. Now, before too much more time passes, the project as it is now, needs to get born... now. It's tired of waiting for the latest unemployment/trouble/move to yet another place... to pass. You know how some folks wait to have a baby until everything's just right and they know they can afford everything? Well that's how I was going about this record, but now the baby can't wait, and it's ready to just come on into the world, kinda how I met my son. :) WITH MY GREATEST & MOST EXTREME GRATITUDE of YOUR HELP, we can finish this CD that will move me and my music forward.
SO PLEASE HELP ME FINISH THIS JOURNEY. PLEASE LET'S WORK TOGETHER TO MEET THE GOAL SO THIS RECORD CAN GET BORN. If all of my facebook friends donated just $1.50 each, we'd make the goal! THANK YOU!!!
