Signs of the Zodiac Playing Cards
A unique playing card set where Chinese horoscope symbols compliment the number and picture cards.
A quick glance and these decks seem just like any other deck. Suits of Clubs, Hearts, Diamonds and Spades. Face colors of red and black and backs of royal blue and red. Numbered 2 to 10, then Jack, Queen, King and Ace. And Joker cards.
But look closer at the Chinese horoscope calligraphy artistically personified in a deck of cards. Each card number is paired to a specific zodiac symbol and the Horoscope’s animal sign represented on the card face. Each card has become a unique symbol of a Chinese zodiac star sign. This is FireWater Entertainment Deck Number 002.
According to legend, in times long past Buddha summoned all the animals in the kingdom to his side. Only twelve animals made the journey. As a reward to the dozen animals that answered Buddha’s behest, Buddha awarded one year of the Chinese calendar to each. The Rat had arrived first of all the animals thus he got to have his name on the first year out of twelve. It is not clear how Buddha classed the rest of the animals however they fall in this order following the Rat: Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. The particular year (and each subsequent twelfth year) would be named after that animal.
Buddha’s legend of naming the Chinese years is the inspiration for the Signs of the Zodiac Playing card deck. As discussed below my journey has been one of finding unique and amazing experiences to entertain others. I’ve been intrigued by both the western and eastern zodiac from the day a close friend explained to me that I am a Leo / Rat. Apparently when loved and property admired I stalk through life with uncommon self-confidence but am cranky when confused and find it difficult to humble myself (I can ‘hear’ my friends nodding their heads at the latter point).
Tinkering away in the back of my mind was how to make something unique utilising the horoscope. Something that others could use in their everyday. Signs of the Zodiac popped in my head one day in the shower. Make a playing card deck where the central suit pips become the zodiac symbols. Just as a year was named after the animals that heeded Buddha’s call, each playing card number is allocated to a horoscope sign. The Signs of the Zodiac playing card deck was born.
Your Chinese Animal Sign is based on the year of your birth as per the Chinese calendar (New Year is lunar driven around the start of February). Use this link if you are unsure. http://www.chinesenewyears.info/chinese-new-year-calendar.php
In suit with legend, the Rat being first to reach Buddha became the King. The other animals, mostly are in the Chinese horoscope order. To me it was inappropriate to call the Queen the Ox. However, fortunately the animal character traits of the Tiger was better suited to Queen and the character traits of the Ox better fit the Jack. Here are some of the picture card animal character traits.
King - The Rat - First to heed Buddha’s call, the instinctive and adaptable rat was placed as the first of the twelve signs. A feat worthy of any King.
Queen - The Tigress - Passionate and intelligent, tigers are go ahead people attracted to the zany and outrageous in their friends and mates, “Come on nutcase, I’ll take care of you.” A beautiful Queen if ever we saw one.
Jack - The Ox - These worker beasts are always most capable. Stable, hardworking, creative and practical. A fine Jack to compliment this trio.
The Ace is represented by the Yin Yang which describes how opposite or contrary forces are actually complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world. This duality is found in many belief systems around the world and thus was the natural choice for the Ace.
He may be funny up front but what is he hiding? Regarded by many as an insolent person who seeks to make a show of cleverness our Joker needed to reveal the torrid inner that the Joker so often masks with it’s bubbling humor.
Here is a brief description of each of the Chinese Zodiac signs.
King - It is the cleaver farm rat that Buddha honored. Rats will achieve and succeed while standing out from the crowd.
Queen - Tigers hate rules unless they make them themselves. They need change and movement and always land on their feet.
Jack - Ox people have fine imaginations for dreaming up new schemes and methods plus can usually put them directly into practice.
10 - Rabbits usually impress others with an image of tenderness, grace and sensitive. They are romantic in relationships, having a high demand for quality of life.
9 - Flashy and brilliant, Dragons always noticeable. They are almost always magnetic and attractive. They command your attention.
8 - There is a quality about Snakes that makes them lovely to look at. Whilst very cunning these people are also full of wisdom and wit.
7 - Horses must express themselves, feel free and operate in an atmosphere that reflects only them. Their way is the best way. Their warm heartedness usually has many flocking around them.
6 - Goats need security, unfortunately most don’t know how to create it for themselves. They are peace loving souls that live firmly in the present.
5 - Monkeys are stable, upstanding creatures who blaze trails, love children and take trouble with details. The temptation to be naughty brings out their childish inner and when that happens, Look Out!
4 - Ah the boastful Rooster, they stay abreast of fashion and are more than happy to discuss who and what they know. They are usually the first with the newest and latest thing.
3 - Dogs generally think the world is plotting against them. However they are crusaders and with a cause to champion, they’ll dig up every bone needed to reach their goal.
2 - Strong, warm, loving and honest is the Pig, also usually rich. Pigs love luxury the best and always show off their impeccable taste and have a craving for culture and knowledge.
Who Am I (the age old question)
From as early as I can remember I wanted to entertain others (it was inevitable, as I’m a Leo / Rat combination). In Grade 3, I wrote short illustrated stories which my teacher read to the class. In the playground I’d develop different and exciting games to play with my friends. Plain old hide and seek was never good enough.
However life takes it twists and turns and other priorities take hold. Today I am a proud husband who has married his soul mate and the most beautiful woman in the world to me. We have three children, two in their late teens and another just starting junior school. We’ve been blessed with well behaved, intelligent children who are a joy to be around (yes even the teenagers).
With a firm family sense of accomplishment, the time comes again to revisit those inner passions. Over the past forty odd years the creative juices continued to flow. Ideas building in the background and I wrote a lot of these down. (how technology makes tracking this information much easier today).
Now comes the time for me to bring many of these ideas to life. The foundation of a new enterprise was born. FireWater Entertainment is the launching pad for unique and amazing gaming experiences (The name is resurrected from a Film and TV production company I had many years ago).
Whist the genesis is playing cards, there are a variety of exciting products coming. Initial momentum was gained with the first release ‘Western Zodiac’ Deck number 001. Its initial release did not fund on Kickstarter however it will forever be deck 001 so we will group and re-launch in the future.
Back to ‘Who am I?’ I believe humans have the capacity to create so many wonderful things. We just need to make up our minds to be more than ordinary. Plus in part, I am very passionate about bringing unique and amazing gaming experiences to the world, so back to the story of my Deck 002 - Signs of the Zodiac.
This project will create three limited release decks of cards. Two are Traditional decks with Red and Royal Blue backs, white faces with the traditional red and black suit pips.
The third deck is a Midnight Edition. Pure black front and back matching the night sky. Pips and symbols are monochrome epitomizing the midnight stars.
All cards are printed on French professional casino 310gsm paper cardstock. Every card has a linen finish with air pockets making them very durable, better handling and more slippery. A light blocking black core forms the centre layer of every card. Printing is undertaken by Make Playing Cards. The print and card stock quality was tested and found to exceed expectations.
All three decks are a limited print run. Once the full allocation has been achieved they will never be re-printed. Further these decks are only available at this price on Kickstarter. Once the project is funded and the decks printed any remaining decks will be sold at a premium on our website. Pledging on Kickstarter will be the only way to get these decks at this price.
To view every card, for every suit, in each deck be sure to visit the Firewater Entertainment Facebook page. Amongst other fun stuff, there will be regular posts featuring images of the Signs of the Zodiac playing card deck.
