I’m raising funds for my fifth book titled Two Guitars, Bass and Drums—the history of the Dondero Pop Concert.
I first had the idea for this book back in 2006, after the Alumni Solo Replay, but it never got off the ground in earnest. Over the next several years I wrote bits and pieces when I could. These short pieces grew and grew and have become a half finished manuscript. Now it’s time to finish it.
This book will only be available to those who make a pledge for its completion on kickstarter. it will not be sold in stores nor on the web.
I believe a large audience exists for this book. The performances of the Dondero High School choirs have had an enduring legacy in the Royal Oak community. This is not just a story of high school nostalgia, but the wonderful story of people being transformed by music and friendship.
The story of the Dondero choirs and Rick Hartsoe's thirty nine-year career isn’t the story of an international superstar, but one of a humble and incredibly talented teacher who knew how to tap into the vast amount of talent in his students.
Far too often, finances can silence a dream.
If the fundraising is successful and exceeds my target amount, stretch goals will be added, such as the design and implementation of an interactive E-Version of the book for kindle, with archival video footage, audio recordings, photos and more.
It will likely take me the remainder of the year to finish the book. After Kickstarter and Amazon take their cut (about $1400 with this project) the funds will cover: research, travel, editing, layout, design, postage, manufacturing, obtaining photos, web promotion and attorney fees.
This book is fully endorsed by Rick Hartsoe and I will have unprecedented access to his personal archives of photos, memorabilia, notes and endless stories.
I will also be soliciting stories from as many Dondero alumni as possible, including those in choir, instrumentalists, set and stage crew, faculty and students who witnessed these years of concerts.
Risks and challenges
I have already completed one successful kickstarter project in 2013 for my book Bending Water and Stories Nearby, which has become a regional best seller.
The risks for this project are minimal. I have been writing, researching and collecting information for this manuscript over the past eight years. I have published four books since 2007, each of them on time with strict adherence to budgets and time constraints. Each book sold out of its initial run and was reprinted by popular demand. This book will only be available in a limited pressing and only available through this kickstarter campaign.
I had a ringside seat in this event as a spectator (when my older sister was in choir) as a performer (when I was at Dondero) and as an alumnus, as I continued to follow the music programs after graduation.
The Dondero Pop Concert was an event that left an enduring legacy which has only become stronger over time.
