About this project
Beacon & Lively introduces the world's premier piece of jewelry designed to keep you effortlessly connected, in a way that is stylish and comfortable.
Ambient colors and/or slight vibrations will politely alert you when someone is calling or texting, and with a flick of the wrist you can shut it off.
The disruptive days of constantly checking your bag or keeping your phone on the table are finally over. The B&L Cuff allows you to stay connected to what's most important to you, in the way most appropriate for you.
Made from plated metal in gold, silver and black, it's a wearable that you'll actually want to wear.
Know who is calling without looking at your phone. You have complete flexibility over illumination colors and patterns. Red for your best friend, blue for your boss, green for the babysitter. Set the colors and patterns for the people and alerts that matter most.
Never miss an important call again. Never be disrupted by calls you can answer later. You decide when to be notified and by whom. Get control of your life…and your phone.
- Design that fits your style – The B&L Cuff is cast in a modern design that compliments your lifestyle. It's jewelry first, technology second.
- Ambient alerts that you control – Notification-specific colors, patterns and vibration intensity can be easily customized by you. Make the B&L Cuff reflect your particular aesthetic and fit into your particular surrounding.
- Discreet muting – Turning off notifications is as seamless as a flick of the wrist or a tap on the cuff.
- A battery that lasts a work week – The battery lasts about 5 days on a single charge.
- Personalized profiles – You can configure your alerts by notification type (text, email, phone, etc.).
- VIPs – Set unique alert profiles for the people that matter most on your contact list.
- Illumination-off mode – Turn off illumination for movies, meetings, and other times when you require the illumination alerts to stay off (alerts by vibration only).

Get yours first – Pre-order now
As a reward for your support, we are offering our first round of bracelets, which include:
- The B&L Cuff - We have triangulated wrist sizing methods from both the fine jewelry and wearable tech industries to develop three cuff sizes. Following your order, we will send instructions on choosing your size.
- Charger - quick and easy pogo-style connection.
- Mobile App - the mobile app will be a FREE download for iOS and Android and will enable you to customize your experience and preferences.
Please click the "contact me" link at the top of the page, in the blue box, with any questions!
To get the perimeter size in inches, we measure the ENTIRE CLOSED OVAL that the bracelet is built around.
- SMALL is 6” total perimeter
- MEDIUM is 6.4” total perimeter
- LARGE is 7” total perimeter
This image above shows the perimeter measurement in INCHES, and the length and width in MILLIMETERS. To determine a comfortable size, measure the circumference of your wrist, using a piece of string. If the length is 6” or less, order a small; 6.4” or less, order a medium, or 7” or less, order a large.
Don't worry. We'll work with you to make sure you get the right size!
Beacon & Lively started as an idea and is being brought to life through creativity, expertise and a hell of a lot of hard work. Our team is equal parts fashion and tech—just like our product. We are curious and passionate people who are skilled in different facets of the industry. This collaboration between unique yet complimentary skills is what drives us, makes us different, and makes us better.
We set off to design a wearable that you'll actually want to wear. Brainstorms, whiteboards, graph paper, 3D renders oh my... after 21 concept sketches, sketch 18 was finally selected by the team. It's sleek and modern with a restrained and classic elegance. In January of 2014, we started making 3D prints of the design. Lots of them. I think we were just excited to be using a 3D printer. Just a month later, we had actual machined prototypes and although the precision was there, they were too light. They didn’t feel like…jewelry. So we went to renown jewelers to get our design cast correctly. The weight felt right and we adjusted the design to be less severe and more comfortable to wear. The final B&L Cuff design is the result of about 12 prototypes, painfully considered decisions, and consulting with the best and brightest.
The body of the B&L Cuff is cast in bronze, then plated in gold, silver, or black ruthenium. It has a satin finish, with high-polished edges. The bottom door is injection molded, opaque, polished plastic, and the LED lens is injection molded, translucent plastic.
We consider technology not as technology, but as problem-solving, and not more than that. We are particularly sensitive to avoid gratuitous functionality creeping, confusing controls or overwhelming options. Technology is a means to an end, not the end itself. In December 2013, we already had our first circuit prototype that would blink a light when a Bluetooth signal was received. There were hugs and a missed high-five or two. We envisioned ourselves as some kind of mission control celebrating a lunar landing.
Between January and February 2014, we looked at several illumination techniques to provide smooth transitions, multiple colors and various patterns, all in a format that would be small enough to fit a comfortable and correct size for a bracelet cuff. By March 2014 we had a functional circuit and in May 2014 we had the circuit mapped to a flexible board that would fit into the B&L Cuff. The hugs turned into high-fives; We knew we were ready to bring the cuff to Kickstarter.
We've developed Beacon & Lively with the future in mind. Sure the cuff looks great, but we know that everyone has different tastes, so we designed it with the components to create a patent-pending foundation that can be used in future bracelets.
From concept, to design, to flawlessly functional prototype, manufacturing and shipping, we have an aggressive yet realistic timeline to get this into your hands and onto your wrists.
The prototype that you see in our video is an early prototype, which focuses on the look, feel and illumination options. It’s really lighting up, and really using patterns that are part of our code set. Since the video was shot, we’ve made even more progress:
Circuit – a full PCB (printed circuit board) layout has been submitted for quotes to about a dozen manufacturers. The circuit contains all the hardware necessary for the B&L Cuff to come to life. We do not anticipate major design revisions to this circuit.
Housing - completed 3dm files have been sent to about a half dozen casting companies. The housing design is complete, except for some final work around finish selection. We identified finish options above (silver, gold, and a black two-tone), but there’s a chance we’ll add a few more. :-)
The Housing + The Circuit = The B&L Cuff.
Also, on our site, we demonstrate a mobile app. The mobile app is fully functional prototype that uses Bluetooth LE connectivity, but is not loaded on the Apple App Store (yet). We’ll be user testing the app with the B&L Cuff to make sure they are both easy to use and provide an effortless experience.

From the overwhelming response to our surveys, energetic buzz, many email inquiries and vocal group of early supporters (you know who you are), we know that there is a real need for our product, and a real problem to solve.
- Mobile - Your funding will help us create an app for the Android platform. We'll also be conducting usability testing to make sure the app strikes the correct balance between personalization and ease-of-use.
- Prototypes - You can help us complete circuit testing on our prototypes to make sure the inner is a refined as the outer.
- Design for manufacturability - There are technical refinements that need to made to ensure that manufacturing is consistent and scalable, so that the price-point can stay accessible.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you for your support in making Beacon & Lively come to life!
Risks and challenges
As with any great idea... refinement from good to great is the significant challenge and vital moment. Over the last several months, the B&L Design team has encountered several technological challenges, most due to the size of the B&L Cuff (keeping it jewelry and not bulky tech). We've overcome these challenges by building an experienced team of engineers, many from the University of Pennsylvania's program for Integrated Product Design.
The B&L Cuff we are bringing to Kickstarter is in its 3rd iteration. Much of the form has been influenced by the size parameters of the components within the bracelet (the LEDS, the bluetooth component, etc.). While we anticipate some potential minor changes in the future, we believe that the design is fundamentally complete.
Future revisions will be focused on designing for manufacturability, so that we can produce the B&L Cuff at volume. We expect the first shipment of B&L Cuffs to backers in January 2015.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
In the US! Although we can't vouch that every part is sourced in the US, the design, casting, and assembly will all be done in the United States.
Short answer: yes. We've heard from a lot of people asking for a dude-version. Something a bit more masculine, but with all the same features. We've already been researching sizes and designs, such as focusing on brass a bit more. Although it's out of scope for this Kickstarter, stay tuned for more details...
No. We have no affiliation with that project. And although some of the functionality is similar, we've really focused on making our cuff stylish, discreet, and something you would want to wear...even if it wasn't connected to your phone!
We also understand that EMBRACE+ has had fulfillment problems. Although no Kickstarter project is without risk, we've taken steps to minimize production issues: we are working with a major jewelry supplier for QVC on the casting (bracelet), and an electronics manufacturer within driving distance of our office (Philly, of course!). By keeping our initial production in the US, we think we can deliver a better product for you!
We plan to offer 3 sizes of B&L Cuffs, which should fit most women. Our sizing strategy was developed using jewelry industry standards. The three sizes are based on the perimeter of the "oval" inside of the cuff: small 6"; medium 6.4"; large 7". Please message us if you have any additional questions!
