The Uopia Nightlight: Better Light, Means Better Sleep
What makes our nightlight different than other nightlights is that it feels and looks like a warm incandescent bulb while providing the energy savings and longevity of an LED unit.
Imagine walking around your home without having to turn lights on and off. For just a few watts of energy your whole home can be illuminated with candle like lighting. Perfect for kids rooms, kitchens hallways and bathrooms.
What about the sleep science?
The science behind the Uopia Nightlight is simple. The nightlight produces warm light with minimal levels of blue wavelengths in order to reduce the impact of artificial lighting on circadian rhythms.
Our body uses sunlight to maintain our circadian rhythm, the body’s internal clock. Much like how your ears are critical to your perception of balance, your eyes regulate your sleep cycle. Photoreceptors in your retina are responsible for responding to light in the 460-480 spectrum, found abundantly in sunlight. When this spectrum of light is present, our body responds by suppress the production of the hormone melatonin to help us stay awake and alert.
Melatonin is responsible for inducing the sensation of drowsiness and facilitating our body’s transition into the deep REM sleep we need to wake up feeling refreshed each day. Unfortunately, most modern lighting--including light from mobile devices, computers and televisions--emits high levels of the blue light found in this range. As a result, our body is tricked into producing lower levels of melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep, and giving us less critical REM sleep. Using the Uopia nightlight before bed and throughout the night will ensure that melatonin levels are at a maximum.
Our custom LED's eliminate more of the blue spectrum. The CRI of over 80 ensures that colors look vibrant even in a dim lighting environment.
Two brightness settings give you flexibility in illuminating your environment. The bright setting is perfect for living rooms, kitchens, and hallways. While the dimmer setting is preferred in bedrooms, and bathrooms.
Our product uses a feature called automatic daylight harvesting. It adjust it's light output when ambient lighting increases. Thus when sunlight or overhead lighting turns on, the nightlight turns off.
SPECIAL NOTE: Our plug is designed for US outlets but our electronics will run at 120V - 240V.
How did it all start?
Quality and Manufacturing
At Uopia we believe that quality and design are paramount . Our partnership with Optoelectronix has allowed us to fulfill this desire. Their expertise and experience has given us a product that will last well beyond 50,000 hours of use. We have used the highest quality components and manufacturing methods. For example we use non-electrolytic capacitors compared to electrolytic ones.
LED lights simply won’t perform as promised without design and manufacture that balances heat, optics, electronics, power, and component attributes. For example, if the heat generated by the LED isn't properly directed out of the LED, it can take years off of the life of the LED. Without proper heat sinking, the LED could lose half of its brightness in less than 1,000 hours.
We have used an integrated approach using the industry’s top modeling tools — including SolidWorks and COSMOS — to design and analyze the entire thermal system for longest life. Automated manufacturing using statistical process control (SPC) methodologies and product quality testing ensure consistent quality and long life.
Our manufacture also uses reliability tests to place the products into situations that greatly exceed what they will normally see over their lifetime.
- Power Temperature Cycling Test: simulates extreme operating and environmental conditions
- Ambient Operating Life Test: simulates normal operating conditions and rules out early mortality
- High Relative Humidity With Elevated Temperature and High Power test: determines the performance of the devices when operated in hot, humid environments
Our product will be CSA certified.
We have been incredibly fortunate to work closely with Optoelectronix. Because of their 30 years and $3 billion of LED product design and manufacturing experience, our product will last for decades. Just miles from our operation in San Jose, Optoelectronix is a market leader in the conception, design and manufacture of plug-and-play LED lighting. They take a cost effective automated approach to manufacturing. Their engineering team located in Penang, Malaysia, the center of competence for LED product manufacturing. Optoelectronix has backed our project and with an abundance of resources that will ensure our product is delivered as promised.

Risks and challenges
Working with Optoelectronix has mitigated our risk in our production. The track record of our manufacturer gives us confidence in our ability to deliver on our production timeline. Furthermore, we are only using CSA certified components in our product to ensure we are creating the safest possible product. Having already created a functioning prototype, we can move forward knowing there are no unknowns in the manufacturing process.
However, even with the decades of experience our manufacturing partner has, there is always a small amount of risk in any production plan.
