About this project
WORBEY & FARRELL:
Variations on a Caprice - Album and DVD
We are a four hands one piano act that has entertained audiences all over the globe with our revolutionary treatment of the traditional piano duet. We have played with leading symphony orchestras, achieved over half-a-million hits on YouTube, performed in over 200 theatres and festivals, on television (ITV's This Morning, BBC's Newsnight, The Culture Show), and radio 4's Friday Night is Music Night. We push the boundaries of the instrument using it to illuminate music of every style – classical, popular and contemporary.
We are both graduates of the Royal College of Music in London where we met in 1990. Steven toured the UK as a soloist giving piano recitals and Kevin worked as a film composer. In 2003 we both teamed up and made a unique transition from muted, classical performers to dazzling showmen without ever compromising our music.
VARIATIONS ON A CAPRICE:
We are passionate about our brand new set of variations on Paganini's famous Caprice no.24 in A minor. Many composers have written variations on this much loved gem which was originally composed for violin, such as Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Lutoslawski and Andrew Lloyd Webber to name a few. In music, variation is a technique where a chosen theme is repeated in an altered form. The alterations can involve harmony, melody, style, rhythm, timbre or any combination of these. Our composition stretches the piano to its limits, using it in ways seldom seen and incorporating a huge range of styles accessible to all musical tastes. The reason we wish to make a DVD as well as an album, is that it is also highly visual as we perform in such an energetic and acrobatic way. Our aim is for people to be excited, moved, inspired and amazed at what they hear and see. We have always had an immense amount of support from Steinway & Sons Pianos in London and are about to become Steinway artists. We will be using a Steinway model 'D' concert grand for the recording and filming. The score will also be published shortly after the recordings are released. The Variations contain many surprises from the way we manipulate the piano to produce wonderful sounds, to the way we create the most surreal and unusual effects using sounds of the earth.
We are asking for your help to make this album and DVD a reality. We plan on recording at a top London recording Studio. The funds we hope to raise will help pay for production, post-production, art and design, manufacturing and promotion which in itself uses up much of the amount. We humbly ask your help so that we can share our love of this work with you. In the event that we over step our target, more funds will be injected into marketing and promotion.
We didn't think we could beat 2012 but 2013 is set to be an amazing year for us. We will be touring the UK and also have performances is Germany, Canada, Russia and Portugal to look forward to. We are also well under way with publishing our arrangements so everyone can enjoy playing the way we do.

Risks and challenges
As the work is substantial - ie over 40 minutes in length, we estimate we will need at least four days to record. We have recorded CD's and DVD's before and although it is a demanding project, we are ready for the pressures that a recording studio presents. The album and DVD will need much spent on marketing to meet its potential - probably more that the recording / post production itself. We have many contacts in UK media with which to pursue PR and marketing on television, radio and publications. We're ready to go!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
