SCYTHE is a psychological slasher/thriller in the same vein of the classic and modern horror films Halloween (1978), Saw (2004), and films from the iconic director Alfred Hitchcock.
WE. ARE. TIRED. OF. BAD. SLASHER. FILMS.
There are just simply way too many bad slashers films out there. Slasher films follow too many horror film cliches. This is the reason why there are so many lists of THE MOST ANNOYING HORROR FILM CLICHES!
So, after we thought about, the conclusion was simple: If no one will make a smart slasher film...WE WILL.
We are eliminating all the “horror film stereotypes,”and the eye-rolling horror film cliques the slasher genre is known for. You won't find any characters running upstairs instead going out the front door, or identifying themselves by calling out "Who's There" in the dark, or tripping over absolutely nothing. (my personal "favorite").
Instead, we're focusing on character’s human qualities and focusing on developing three dimensional characters that actually have lives, that we care about, and what you might really do when faced with perilous situations. The girls fight back, killer can be hurt, they are alert, aware of their surroundings, they can use car keys, no cat jump out at anyone!
We are bringing back the essence of what made classic horror films popular in the first place, by keeping the focus on suspense, drama, fear, terror and intensity, rather gore and blood. But don't worry, there will be blood. I mean, after all, it is a slasher film. Coupled with modern technology is what separates SCYTHE from the average horror film, into a thinking man’s horror film where each character must find the fighting spirit within themselves in order to survive against...
Stylistically, we're going to blend the fluidity of compassionate moment-to-moment movement with a handheld, realistic, chaotic, indie vibe. Through the seamless incorporation of haunting music and first person “Point of View” cinematography filmed through the use of filters and color tones, we will contrast the controlled obsession of the FBI Agent, juxtaposed with the unsettling chaotic fear into which the girls are suddenly thrust.
On the week of prom night in Concord North Carolina, RONALD WADE, known as The Grim Reaper Killer, escaped a prison transport and breaks into a hardware store, surprising high school student EMILY JOHNSON, the store owner's daughter. Under the cover of the store's blackout, a hide-or-be killed cat and mouse game ensues, ending with several stab wounds to Emily's back with a SCYTHE, the killer's signature weapon.
A television left on breaks the news of the Grim Reaper's escape and highlights his exploits, as he swings a scythe at Emily, beheading her. She is his latest victim. And his first mistake.
With prom cancelled and a mandatory curfew in effect, shy teen MEGAN MILLER is forced by her best friend KIM to meet with AMY, VICKY, REBECCA, and JENNIFER after hours at the abandoned pool for a party. At the pool party Megan opens up about her desire to be great, to be worthy of someone worth knowing. This confession leads the girls to bond and build a sisterhood to watch out for one another. Unbeknownst to them outside hovers the Grim Reaper Killer, targeting them as his newest victims.
When young, disgraced FBI AGENT CHRIS GIBSON is tasked with recapturing the killer he encounters the seasoned US MARSHAL JOHN DECKER. After a jurisdictional dispute the two begrudgingly join forces. While examine Emily's body it is Agent Gibson that discovers the killer's mistake: this is not the work of The Grim Reaper Killer. It is someone else...
In order to attract investors and get them excited about the film, not only did we create a feature film packet full of storyboards and awesome conceptual renderings....
We went out and filmed test footage. Shot on location in Altadena, CA, over the course of a three day intensive schedule, the footage turned out much better than we expected.
So much so that when we edited the entire piece together, our team and I discovered an awesome truth:
WE HAD A SHORT FILM!
We decided to test out the short film SCYTHE on the film festival circuit, and see what kind of response we'd get.
The film premiered at the 2015 Los Angeles International Short Film Festival.
At the festival, the head shorts film programmer for the Cleveland International Film Festival asked us to submit it to HIS film festival. And in March, it was announced, that we had been accepted into the 40th Cleveland International Film Festival!
Since March, a number of articles have been written about the short film...
Since the footage served as a basis for the feature and with everyone loving the footage and with the articles and all the positive feedback, we know we are ready.
It's time to make the feature.

Because low budget films are made...well...low budget, often times a filmmaker will have to make adjustments to his original vision, in order to accomplish the goal of being able to make the feature film at all.
However, in case we are so fortunate to raise more than our minimum goal of $50,000, we have created STRETCH GOALS to be able to make an even better film!
If we don't reach the stretch goals, NOT TO WORRY! We are still going to make a quality film that both you and we can be proud of!

Risks and challenges
In filmmaking there are always unknown factors. The biggest one is that things can be delayed. That unfortunately is the nature of the business. But the quality of the film will never falter. I've shot 4 short films and in my experiences, while delays may arise, the films always are complete. This is my third Kickstarter campaign. And in each instance everyone has received their rewards in a timely fashion.
