About this project

Dimensions Role-Playing System is a pen and paper role-playing game. It is a unique rule-set that is designed to mix all genres into a cohesive system, while keeping together elements of the more traditional RPG feel. It can be played using one single setting or any combination of settings. The strongest emphasis on the system though is flexibility and creation. It is a system that allows players to create their own races. It allows them to tweak abilities to fit their characters. It allows them to create magically or technologically enhanced equipment instead of just buying them from a list. It emphasizes that anything can be shifted, bent, or changed to create the system you want.

The system began development over ten years ago when its creator, Juliet Fehrenbacher, needed a roleplaying system that combined technology and magic. At that time, none of the books on the market gave the perfect blend her group sought so she went to work to create a basic system. The first run was rough with many balance issues, but fun and exciting none-the-less. Over the next several years, it continued to evolve in both concept and mechanics. Some of the mechanical concepts are created from scratch, and many are borrowed and tweaked from other systems that did it right. Inspiration for rules and elements of the system came from many sources, as we wanted to incorporate the ability for the system to work in any type of campaign. We wanted players to feel that the system could be used for an anime style campaign just as easily as it could be used for a traditional fantasy adventure or a zombie survival fest. Because of this, inspiration for abilities was drawn from video games, movies, TV shows, anime, comic books, graphic novels, MMO computer games, other RPG’s, trading card games, war games, pop science fiction, pop fantasy, and any other source that we could see a group of role-players wanting to create a campaign out of.

There are many things that make Dimensions unique, the first and foremost is the character creation and advancement system. We wanted to create a system that was extremely fluid in versatility like a point buy system but had the classic feel of a level based system, because face it, RPG's just aren't the same without levels. Characters are advanced via levels, where they then earn building blocks to their characters such as additional skill levels and more abilities. A character's true power comes from selected abilities (power attacks, spells, skill feats...), which they gain access to as their skill levels increase in different areas.  Abilities can be Minor (usually passive increases or upgrades to other abilities), Major (moderately powerful special attacks and tricks), and Epic (Powers that define your character.  The big weapons you pull out when surrounded by half an army and you're out of healing potions).

One thing that our unique advancement system solves is an inherent problem with Point buy systems which is end game content. The game is set up so that many abilities have prerequisite skill levels. Skill Level caps at each character level ensure that certain abilities are only obtainable late game and will still require months of trekking across the forests to unlock.

Another unique feature of the game is the Vitality system. The vitality system is set up to show a cohesion between physical damage, stress, mental health, and general exhaustion. As a character takes damage from attacks, they lose Vitality. As they are intimidated, seduced, and charmed, they lose Vitality. Every time a mage casts a spell or a fighter uses a special attack, they draw energy from their Vitality. Every hour your party spends traveling on the road, they lose Vitality. This system creates a new layer of strategy while players must calculate if casting that high level spell is worth the Vitality cost.  Mages can cast and cast and cast all day and they don't merely "run out of spells"... they actually burn themselves out until they are heaving on the ground from exhaustion.

The Dimensions RPG rulebook will also contain the campaign setting Heroes of Terrestia.  Heroes of Terrestia was designed to take advantage of the many elements of the book.  The setting takes place post-apocylpyse to give it a gritty feel of survival as the players navigate between cities trying to trade extra ammo for gas while they avoid the Muted that prowl in the wastes.  Multiple planets span the solar system, allowing the players to take advantage of space travel and explore varying environments.  The setting encorporates all 6 types of magic found in the Dimensions rulebook as well as all traditional fantasy species, mutants, androids, three campaign setting specific species,and even seamlessly intigrates the four alien species found in the book.

But why are we here? If you're reading this then you can probably self identify as a nerd, and one thing that we nerds love is books.  We love our books to be big, hard back, and have lots of pretty pictures.  This is what we want too. We aren’t making Dimensions to put it in a PDF or a Word document. We aren’t going to push it out with a flimsy paper cover and black and white art. We want this to be something you love to own.  Dimensions will be hard back, full color photos, and will be well over 300 pages. We want you to want this book. We want this to be a book that not only has a system worth playing, but we want it to be something that you are proud to display on a book shelf or coffee table. We want it to be something that you can open up for no reason other than to enjoy the pictures and daydream about your next campaign session.

We have created the book and gathered artwork. Now we need to go to the next step, layout design and printing; and we need your help to get there. Help us to make this game for you.

Risks and challenges

The largest hurdle we may face is a delay in finishing the layout or the printing. If this occurs, we will do everything we can to make up time where possible to ensure the book comes out as close to its expected delivery as possible.
