What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

Plants are a staple for any healthy household. Not only do they purify the air, but they look great doing it. Plants are a symbol of wellness, and they possess the ability to turn a house into a home. Unfortunately, plants are not motile and cannot gather rainwater inside of a house or in a dry location. Although we try our best to water our plants, but there will be the odd occasion where we forget. For this reason, we at BlueThumbs were hard at work creating a solution, are proud to present to you The Botanist.

We have all had times where we worry about our plants before leaving on a vacation, or sometimes we aren't sure how much water our plants really need. It is this incentive that drove us at BlueThumbs to ask ourselves - How might we ensure consistent and reliable access to water for our plants automatically over long periods of time?

The Botanist is our answer to that question. By combining multiple concepts such as machine-powered liquid transportation and moisture sensing technology, we have built a product that, once set up, can guarantee that your plants will always get the water they need to thrive. The Botanist comes with many features that allow it to adapt to the different needs of every plant and household. There are two buttons and an LED indicator for the user.

Below is a picture of the soil sensor:

Features so far:

  • Power On/Off
  • Set mode
  • Increase/Decrease the moisture threshold
  • Bluetooth connectivity for our app

Now that we've prototyped our design and made it fully functional, we need your help to kick off the project. Only with your pledges can we have an efficient and effective manufacturing, packaging, and shipping process. With your help, we will ensure that your home never feels empty, because plants give a house the life it needs to become a home.

Risks and challenges

Pot size compatibility:
Planters come in many different sizes and shapes, so we are working hard with our 3D modelling professional to create a design that will accommodate most planter sizes and shapes.

Manufacturing contracts:
We need to source a manufacturing process and company that can produce the shell of the final Botanist.
