About

Not long ago, Idaho's famous Salmon River was defined as much by the hermits and colorful eccentrics who lived in cabins, caves and other strange places along the winding river's shore.

Today, The Salmon River's cultural present and future are being defined and shaped by a new generation of women and men who are bringing fresh Heart & Soul to this timeless place.

Who are these people?  Where are they from?  Why did they come to The Salmon River?  What makes them tick?  Why are they notable?

Each of their stories is unique and compelling.  Each individual (or couple) we plan to showcase has their own captivating story highlighted and motivated by their love of The Salmon River.

In the past, people focused on telling the fanciful stories of a fast fading generation that was largely part of a bygone era.  We seek to showcase new energy and enthusiasm focused on an exciting future for The Salmon River.

How did our desire to tell these stories come about?

On May 16, 2012, we began our "Salmon River Idaho" project.  Originally, we envisioned a website that would provide information about a 150-mile stretch of the The Salmon River between Stanley & North Fork.  (The entire river is over 400 miles long.)  As our project progressed we realized the "real story" of The Salmon River is in its unique "cast of characters" who reside and make their living on or alongside the legendary Idaho river.

As we made our monthly rounds up and down The Salmon River we began to know without doubt that we must find a way to write about, describe and preserve the memories of the incredible people who call Salmon River Country their home.

The late Dugout Dick is perhaps the Poster Child for the larger-than-lifestyle once so commonly found along The Salmon River.  We are deeply involved in ongoing efforts to preserve Dugout Dicks memory and legacy.  You can read more about those efforts at http://www.dugoutdick.com/ and at the Facebook group we maintain for Dugout Dick: http://www.facebook.com/groups/dugoutdick/

The Salmon River is no longer defined by unique old eccentric guys like Dugout Dick.  The Salmon River is alive with fresh faces, fresh ideas, and the new lives of energetic people wanting to make their living and help create a legacy living in this incredible place.  They are the real story of The Salmon River.  Yes, there are still some Old Guys and Gals whose stories are begging to be told but we're looking for those awesome, vibrant people who are helping reshape the modern legacy of The Salmon River.

Our Salmon River Idaho project proved to be very popular.  We finished our first year (mid-May to end-of-year) with over 30,000 page views.  We also received some humbling donations to continue our work on behalf of covering The Salmon River.

Our Kickstarter project is very simple.  We want to create a Webseries about Salmon River People using video, digital photography, text narrative and MP3 audio files. The Salmon River People project is an opportunity for you to support a webseries and online articles illustrating and describing the new faces of The Salmon River.  The money received from sponsorship will simply pay for our expenses to spend the necessary time with the people we hope to write about.

If you already love The Salmon River, we know you will appreciate our Salmon River Idaho website:

You can see an article that is a sample of the type of writing and video we plan to do on Salmon River People at this website:

http://salmonriverpeople.blogspot.com/

We have so many people we want to interview and write about.  We really hope someday to be able to look back and say that we helped create a modern cultural definition for The Salmon River based on those unique people who call the area their home.

Thank You for reading!  Many Cheers, John Parsons

Risks and challenges

We do not foresee any risks to this project. Our goal is to produce five top notch "people profiles" each year. We seek funding for only five such articles. We are budgeting $240 for each article. We live in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and it is a 300 mile round trip to the nearest point on The Salmon River. Any miles up or down river add to the trip total. Even a short trip to Salmon River Country usually costs us about $200-$250 in gas, food and camping fees. Kickstarter funding will simply facilitate us spending more time on The Salmon River interviewing and writing about the people who call that place home. Kickstarter funds will allow us to take the time and make a specific schedule to visit specific people that we wish to write about.

NONE of the Kickstarter funds will be used for equipment. We have chosen to produce five really good webseries video stories about really interesting people this summer because we feel that's a realistic, attainable objective. The Kickstarter funds will enable us to take the proper amount of travel time to do the story correctly and not be in a hurry. We will keep our Sponsors informed about various aspects of the project from a minimum of a monthly email update to much more frequent communications depending on your level of Sponsorship.
