About this project
THE LOST TEA PARTY: BURNING MAN 2014 Who are the Lost Tea Party?
.... Roll epic orchestral desert music....
Some say they stumbled onto the Eastern Seaboard of the New World by way of a remarkably slow steam-boat from China. Others yet, say they have journeyed since the Age of the Caliphs, and that on one dark and stormy night, caught in a ferocious sand storm in the Hindu Kush mountains, this unique caravan was driven from the well trodden sands of the Silk Road.
Lost in time and, well basically, pretty much lost in general, this band of Traders, Neo- Babylonians and Seekers of Truths have continued through the centuries gathering pilgrims and tales. These regal ships of the desert, have - without forsaking their camel-like shadow - somehow taken on a new form, and have emerged as if from a mirage, like great big tea pots.
They stride majestically across the sands of time like some mutated Dali-esque vision on ornate, elongated metal legs, with their spout-like heads nodding and bells tinkling. Harbouring Sons of Sultans, Persian Princesses and the odd Assyrian assassin, each pot-like pod has a unique tale to tell, trading not only with herbs, spices and wordly goods but also of philosophies and technologies in a rich cultural tapestry of exchange, setting the world to rights over a really, really nice cup of tea.
Maintained and administered to by the Colonel Major and his hapless soldiers of fortune, no longer scouring the horizon for signs of the enemy, they'd rather search for a nice spot to make camp, get settled and put the kettle on.
Caravan, Music, Performance & A Good Cuppa
The Lost Tea Party Caravan is five trailers pulled by a 1943 GMC 4x4 This Desert Rat houses a water boiling contrivance that is sculptural as well as functional. This steaming contraption requires the constant attention of it's crew the Missing 2nd Unit.
Tea making is the quintessential function of the Train, and every thing stops for it. Led by Colonel Major Third, the crew works with the Bedouin Tea-pod pullers who are dressed in traditional desert garb, richly decorated thobes and fine silk keffies. Their task is to guide the procession, and assist fellow Burners as they climb into and out of the Teapots. All are welcome to ride the train.
Hey, got any biscuits up there?
The pods are capable of housing 3-4 weary Burners. An oasis of comfort on a cold night or welcome shade in the relentless heat of the day. It's an intimate space and each pod has a distinct flavour.
One bears the musk of a thousand spices, while in another an Assyrian assassin will offer you his hookah pipe and in yet another a Persian Princess may light up the incense and shout down to the Mongol hordes for a glass of tea.
Three Mongolian marauders make up the final part of the crew, they guard the rear of the train. They take no prisoners but they also leave no one behind.
The last Teapot in the line is a baby
Would you like a cup of tea?
In exchange for your support we want to make you art and, if you're coming to the Playa, we want to make you part of our art. And of course, there's always a nice cup of tea.
REWARDS FOR YOUR DONATIONS
Pretty much all the rewards will be artwork by me, wreckage, and some of that is still a twinkle in my eye, in those cases i will show examples of the kind of thing you can expect.
Everyone will receive a postcard from the playa and a big shout out on the Mutate Britain Website. Respect!!
THE COMIC BOOK COLLECTOR SERIES
This is a random selection of my paintings and graphics. The idea was inspired by my yellowing comic collection, I will be doing a Lost Tea Party inspired comic book style graphic for this series of prints, but you can also take your pick from any of these.. click on the link to see all of them. Or if you have no preference we'll make the choice for you.
COMIC BOOK PRINTS
A TERRIFIC PANORAMIC FROM THE PLAYA
Ok this is a slightly shonky impression of what this glorious 30"x 10" Gloss Fuji Chrystal Archive print will resemble. We haven't invented Time Travel, yet, but we do have Sketchup
HAND PULLED COLOUR SILK SCREEN PRINT
A 17"x14" multi colour screen print of graphic artwork inspired by the finished TeaPods. Signed by Wreckage and in an edition of 100. OK so, still working on this, but I think it'll be in this kind of ball park
PENCIL SKETCHES FROM THE PLAYA
A signed pencil drawing of the Caravan on the Playa. I'll be sharpening my pencils with greatest of care to leave no trace.
OIL PAINT SKETCHES FROM THE PLAYA
I've always loved the small oil sketches that Singer Sargent made as he travelled the world, from Spain and on through Jordon, probably with his valet on hand, to hand him the turps. Of course, I'm not John Singer Sargent, but I'm going to give it my best shot!
Finally!! A Large Scale 3'x4' Oil and Acrylic Painting for your Parlour
This is my most recent painting, airbrush on Board, 3' x 4'. This is not on offer I'm afraid It but it gives some indication of what I'm up to..
So for these last two rewards I intend to develop from sketches and photographs whatever inspiration this years Burn throws at me, and when I'm done they are yours, and many, many thanks for your heroic participation in this modern day adventure..
A brief history and an Introduction to the lead artist and crew:
In 2008 myself, Joe Rush and a small crew of Mutoid Waste bandits made our way from London to California with a vision.. a vision (well more of a vague notion really) that we could somehow and in someway build a dream, our American Dream, a wagon we named Rustang Sally. This is she..
RUSTANG SALLY: 2008 THE AMERICAN DREAM My name is Wreckage, I'm an artist who has worked and travelled as part of the Mutoid Waste Company for over twenty years. Who are Mutoid Waste? Well, they are a rum bunch of renegades - freedom fighters of sorts. artisans, scrap metal fabricators of form and fiction. On a wave, and as part of a cultural tide we squatted empty factory's throughout mid 80's London and had some legendary parties in the emerging Acid House scene.
Keen to expand our horizons we then ran amok throughout 90's Europe in mutated and probably highly illegal vehicles. Around the fall of the Berlin Wall, we hi-jacked discarded military hardware and in a good natured way, utilised this military detritus to highlight the futility of war, only in a party setting and with some bloody good tunes.
We have since made our mark on Glastonbury Festival and were also invited to be a creative force in the closing ceremony for the 2012 Paralympics in the UK. With a viewing audience of over seven and a half million people, it was our biggest gig to date. Hello Mum!
Last hour update
I have decided to do a last minute addition to the rewards - three actual ceramic tea pots, in the style of this gorgeous 3D rendering by Luke Marcel.

Risks and challenges
We are a predominantly British crew and a smattering of us has attended the odd Burn or five, but we do have strong Burn connections - like attracts like, it's not rocket science, it's physics! or at the very least, human nature, but I digress.
We have received an Honorarium from the Burn, which is totally brilliant. It's a welcoming gesture and at the very least means y'all think we are on the right track. But it is but a portion of the costs required. We would like you to be part of the project, why else would we embark on this campaign of insanity.
So, sit back, no really - sit back relax, empty your mind, and imagine you want to build this thing... think ..where do i start
get some 2" pipe, Okay got it, hmmm, ok i want to bend it.
Better go buy a pipe bender...
it's a challenge, and no mistake.
It's all worth it though when you see the look on peoples faces as it rolls past them, or better still, as it scoops them up and carry's them into an uncertain future.
an uncertain future built on positive, creative vibes.
Update 25th July: Raising more than our target means we can replace the broken pipe bending machine and complete the project stress free (ish). Thank you all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
