Lying For The Camera is only half a romance novel.
But with your help it's going to become a completed, professionally edited, as-fabulous-as-I-can-make-it romance novel. It features a truly awesome heroine, Hattie, who is a plus-sized model with big ambitions. She is the best person I've ever written. I want to be friends with her and I want to be her. She's brilliant. Honestly. Don't take my word for it, read the story so far, starting here.
To achieve Hattie's ambitions, she needs Tom's help. Tom is a fashion photographer trying to break into the world of art photography. He's ruthless and charming and just a little bit tortured. He's also crazy about Hattie.
Where it's at so far
I began publishing Lying for the Camera online as a serial in September 2012.
The story stalled when I had to focus my attention on my PhD. That's now all but finished (hooray!) and so I can get back to working on Tom and Hattie. I can't wait and neither can they.
What I want the money for
The online version of the book is raw and unedited. Because I've written it in serial form, I'm conscious that the overall shaping of the story is a bit uneven. I want to hire a professional editor, with experience in the romance genre, to do a developmental edit of the book in order to help me strengthen the story and characterisations. The book will then be copy edited and proofread, prior to publication.
I've self-published without editing before and I've published books through a publisher with rigorous editing. I know which of those books are better. Hint: the ones that have been edited. To be clear, this is about a whole lot more than checking for typos. I am paying for someone to understand the structure of the story, the pacing, the plot, the character development and so on. These are things which are very hard to see in your own work and not easy for non-professional beta readers to identify or suggest improvements.
Good editing does not come cheap. I have an estimate of $320 for developmental edits. Copyedits and proofreading will be approximately $600. See the update page for more details on the budget and funding target for the project.
Why you should trust me to complete the project
I am a published author. I know how to finish writing a book. I've also found that I work much better with a deadline. The Kickstarter pledges will be a great motivator!
I've got a great editor lined up and she's able to do the work in early August. So that's another great deadline to have for getting the first draft completed.
I'll need some time to work through her suggestions, then get the final copyedits, proofreading and typesetting done. I'm confident that I should be able to have the book published by the start of October.
Lying for the Camera will be a category-length romance novel (40-45,000 words), and I anticipate that it will initially be on sale for $2.99.
Will you still be able to read the serial online?
Yes, until the final version of the book goes on sale. I'm not taking down the chapters that are there and I still plan to put the remaining chapters on the blog as I write them. If you just want 'the story', read it there. If you're interested in investing to help me make this story as great as I believe it can be, then please consider pledging your support. When the final version is ready for sale, the unedited version will be removed from my website.
What formats will the ebook be available in?
Epub, mobi and pdf. You'll be emailed the files to upload to your preferred device. These will be DRM free so if you need to convert to some other format, you can do that too!
If the project is successfully funded, then I'm committed to using 5% of the profits to back other Kickstarter projects. To be clear, any money I raise from this project which is not used to pay for the editing/copyediting/proofreading process will be counted as profit for this purpose.
Risks and challenges
I guess the risk is that I might not be able to finish the story due to unforseeable circumstances - illness, or something. Or I might not get on with the editor at all and need to find someone else, which could take a while.
If there are any delays to the process, I'll be sure to update you as soon as possible. I've built in a good amount of extra time to make sure that the pledges are delivered when promised, but if that's not possible, you'll be the first to know.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
