The world lays in ruins from centuries of war and the great armies are forced to take one final stand at their castle gates. Who will be victorious and who will be erased forever? Will it be the Humans who hope to return the land to order, or the Orcs who see it fit that only the strong should survive? Will it be the Undead who slave to fertilize the land with decay, or the Elementals who seek to return the land to chaos? Your skill will determine the fate of the world.
Keep Battles is a turn based strategy game inspired by the popular Warcraft 3 mod Castle Fight. With your support, we hope to create an engaging strategy game that lets you wage epic wars on your friends from home or on the go.
Multiple Races - There will be 8-10 different playable races each with their own unique aesthetics, units, and playstyle! Whether you prefer to play as the Orcs and press a ruthless offensive against your foe, or raise the corpses of your enemies to fight for you as the Undead, there's something for everyone!
Easy to learn... - Gameplay emphasizes making decisions, rather than mechanical skills. As a result, it's easy for anyone to pick up Keep Battles and start playing!
...Difficult to master! - With each race boasting a variety of different units and unique special buildings, there's no shortage of strategies to play with and against!
Gameplay in Keep Battles alternates between two phases, the Build Phase and the Battle Phase. During the Build Phase, players can construct a building inside their castle, or they can choose to pass and save their gold for a future turn. There are two types of buildings: Spawners, which periodically produce units, and Special Buildings, which have a variety of unique effects.
During the Battle Phase, each players' units automatically attack their enemy's castle, fighting each other along the way. Units can't be controlled by the player. After the set time has elapsed, each player receives their income and the game goes back to the Build Phase.
Races are still in development. Information here should not be taken as a promise of final design.
You can choose from 8 different playable races (and up to 2 more from Kickstarter backers). These are the planned races:
Human: Humans seek to restore order to the land. They are well-rounded, with units that complement each other. Humans are the race depicted in the screenshots and video.
Orcs: Orcs live for conflict and battle, and are at home in the war-torn and lawless world of Keep Battles. Orcs value offense above all else, and they are best when played aggressively. Orc units have the Frenzy ability, which restores health and slightly increases attack speed when they kill an enemy unit.
Dwarves: The tech-savvy Dwarves spent centuries supplying weapons to anyone who could pay, but only recently emerged to join the fight. Wielding guns and explosives, the Dwarves are a powerful force on the battlefield.
Elves: While war raged around them, the Elves lived peacefully - and mercilessly executed any trespasser who set a foot inside their glades. With the world exhausted from centuries of conflict, the Elves have abandoned their peaceful lives in favor of expanding their empire. Elven units rely on being fast and agile, raining arrows from afar or quickly moving in for the kill.
Undead: The Undead seek to turn the world into a paradise of death. With soldiers that can reanimate and Necromancers that can raise the corpses, their implacable advances horrify the living.
Beastmen: The Beastmen are a collection of different tribes who banded together after being shunned by the rest of the world. With units ranging from cunning Lizardmen to vicious Werewolves, the Beastmen are vicious fighters that must stand united to reach their full potential.
Elementals: The Elementals wield the power of the land itself, using it to impede their foes. By using the land itself to impede enemy movement, the Elementals spread chaos and panic amongst their foes while picking them off one by one.
Demons: Little is known about where the Demons came from, or why. Survivors speak of the shadows themselves coming alive, and of monstrous winged beasts that can decapitate a dozen soldiers with a single stroke. Wielding dark magic and a willingness to sacrifice their own life for power, Demons are a horror story come to life.
We're passionate about making great games, and that requires licenses, hardware for development and testing, and hosting for our website and servers. Thus far we've used personal investments to make a prototype for Keep Battles, but Kickstarter provides the best chance for us to secure the funding required to make Keep Battles the best that it can be. We'll be using the funds for:
iOS development licenses and hardware.
Hosting for our website and servers.
Programming support for a wide variety of mechanics.
Additional sound effects and music.
Just as importantly, Kickstarter gives us the opportunity to connect with you. You want the game to succeed just as much as we do, and that's why we want you to be in touch with our progress and our challenges. We want your feedback, and we want you to be involved!
Keep Battles is primarily a one-man project. I've spent my whole life playing games (starting with my parents' Sega Genesis when I was 2 years old). I've also been programming, and making games, as a hobby for the past 15 years. I believe that a great game doesn't need to be complicated or difficult to learn, and that the best games are simple to learn but have enough depth that they are difficult to master. With your support, I'll be able to make Keep Battles into a great game.
Our funding goal is the bare minimum required to make this game a success. We would love nothing more than to be able to make this game bigger and better.
$7,000: Single Player Campaign - Experience Keep Battles' history in a single player campaign, intended to give players the opportunity to get acquainted with the game and to try different races and strategies.
$10,000: Additional Maps - We'll add a variety of battlefields to the game, playable in both single player and multiplayer.
$14,000: Custom Race Builder - Make your own race and your own units (using existing mechanics and models) for use in the Single Player Campaign or in battling your friends!
Risks and challenges
Game development is infamous for running into unexpected obstacles that result in significant setbacks and delayed releases. We've attempted to mitigate risks by developing the game prototype first, but there's still a number of possible hindrances that we might encounter.
Although we have experience making games, we've never released a game on iOS before. There are several challenges specific to iOS (for example, general game performance, and being approved by Apple.) However, we are confident that we can succeed in these.
