"This is as close as anybody’s gotten yet to true tower defense in a board game. In addition to deck construction, you have campaign character leveling, and you’ve got a really, very, very unique action simulation, quite unlike anything else out there, including all the other Tower Defense games, which again, aren’t quite Tower Defense.
I think more than anything else, I am very, very impressed by how the developers have captured a heretofore un-capturable video game system and brought it to analog form, kept the spirit alive, but created something new and interesting, most notably, the cooperative play."
Defense Grid: The Board Game combines everything you love about board games with a true to form Tower Defense game. It has a campaign with 10 missions, character leveling, deck building, and 77 miniatures in every box.
Everything included in the game's box, even the miniatures, is designed to improve the game play experience. The miniatures have an innovative pillar system that is used to track hit points, carry cores, track shots fired on towers, and track status effects.
Every mission and wave of aliens provides an increasing challenge that will force you to rebuild your AI character decks regularly and use everything at your disposal to earn the best medal you can.
"Me, I like that. I like a co-op that will really push you hard, and punish you, and force you to make really tough decisions, where there are no good answers."
Defense Grid: The Board Game is a tower defense game where 1 to 4 players work cooperatively to destroy waves of aliens as they attempt to steal the players’ cores and run off with them.
You will each control 1 of 6 available AIs as you play simultaneously to build, upgrade, and fire the Towers available to your AIs in each mission.
After each mission, you will receive a Bronze, Silver, or Gold medal. Based on the medal you will acquire points that can be used to level up and customize each of your AIs.
After leveling up, and between each Mission attempt, you can customize your Decks as you prepare to face your next Mission.
Each Mission in Defense Grid: The Board Game is constructed using modular map tiles, creating the 10 unique Missions included with the game and 24 Bonus Missions that we will release for free in the months after the game makes it to backers.
When playing, each player only has to control 1 AI. It is designed to support true Solo play or a really deep Cooperative experience for up to 4 players.
Setup time for most Missions is about 5 to 10 minutes and play time is usually 1 to 2 hours per Mission.
The game is designed for people 13+ years of age due to small parts that children could swallow.
Thank you for your support and remember to Protect the Cores!

$15 - Digital Art Book & Create Your Own Missions set
Get both the Digital Art Book and the Create Your Own Missions tools for $5 off.
Starting with the $50,000 Stretch Goal, all Stretch Goals include 2 Alien Miniatures in every box. Let us know which ones you would like more of in the comments!
Free Bonus Missions Each Month
Taking a page from the Defense Grid video games, we plan to support this board game long after it is released.
Each month after release, we will be providing 1 free new Challenge Mission and Wave set.
These Missions will be offered as a free PDF download that you can print and use with your game. They will leverage the existing Towers, Aliens, and Map tiles to expand your game and challenge you in ways the included Missions do not.
We commit to releasing these Challenge Missions monthly for at least 2 years following general availability of the game.
The tallest Tower Miniature is the Concussion at 57mm and the shortest is the Temporal at 48mm.
In the final product, all Tower Miniatures will have a hex shaped base attached with a single pillar that is used to track shots available for each tower each round.
The boost platform is a special tower piece that is built under other towers to improve Line of Sight. Each Tower will have a hex-shaped base that fits in the top of the Boost Tower.
All Alien Miniatures are either in the process of being produced in a small run for PAX South or are just finishing sculpting. As the small run and sculptures complete, I will update the images below.
In the final product, all Aliens will have a base with 2 pillars on it that is shaped a bit like an arrow to help players handle Alien facing.
A new design is being produced for the Healer and art is not yet available.
Our draft rules are available for people to check out. These are still a work in progress, so if you have any feedback on them, let us know!

Twitch Kickstarter Launch Night playtest
GenCon 2016 Beta Playtest
This is an early playtest with Jeff and Michael from Hidden Path Entertainment, the original creators of the Defense Grid video game series. It has some nice Q&A with us and the community about what led to the creation of Defense Grid: The Board Game.
TableTop Simulator Demo
A demonstration of Defense Grid: The Board Game is available now on TableTop Simulator.
It consists of Mission #1, and is scripted to make play more enjoyable. If you do not own Tabletop Simulator, it may be purchased here:

Rewards from the Defense Grid: The Board Game Kickstarter will ship as soon as they have finished production. The shipping costs will be collected through a pledge manager (most likely backerkit) when the goods are ready to ship.
Shipping costs will reflect the actual cost to ship your pledge and any additional rewards you selected from that backer level. We will make our best effort to ease the burden of shipping by fulfilling rewards from shipping partners around the world. We are planning to utilize either Black Box or Ship Naked for distribution and to help ease any and all import fees, VAT, duties, taxes, post office fees, and or any other fees each country or government imposes on backers.
When we go to collect the shipping fees, if you are not happy, you can request a refund for any items that have not yet been delivered from your Kickstarter pledge. You will get any money, minus any Kickstarter related fees we were charged, refunded. You will have 28 days from when the shipping fees are requested to request a refund. The refund will be processed after the game has completed manufacture and has general availability. Due to manufacturing obligations, we likely won't be able to process any refund requests before then, but if we can, we will.
We are working with Tim Fowers who has run multiple successful, EU Friendly Kickstarters and shipped them all while avoiding VAT Taxes to do the same for our backers.
- This game is not going into distributors, it may not be in your local store.
- Backer Deal - the game is cheaper now than it will be after the Kickstarter campaign.
- European copies will be sent from inside the EU to avoid VAT.
October is the latest that we expect the game to be in your hands. Panda is currently giving an estimate of July or August for completion, but we would rather be safe with the estimates we are providing backers.
Special Thanks to all of the following who have helped to make Defense Grid: The Board Game the best it can be!
My wife, Nicole, for supporting us over the last 2 years as we dove head first into this project and dealing with my weird sleeping patterns as I overworked myself too frequently.
Jeff Pobst, Michael, and everyone else at Hidden Path Entertainment for giving us a chance to use their amazing Defense Grid series for our first board game. This has been both a dream of ours as well as a honor to work with such a talented and passionate organization on such an ambitious project.
David White for helping us take our map tile art from the basic stuff I made up to fully 3D rendered art based on DG2's video game art.
James Van Schiek for the amazing 3D sculptures that have become our miniatures. This was not an easy task to take 3D models that are mostly hollow and turn them into easy and cost effective to produce miniatures.
Jeff Rodman for the rapid turnaround on making James's sculptures into actual Resin and Metal miniatures for us to show off in this Kickstarter and prove that the miniatures can actually be manufactured.
David with Panda for helping us learn and work through the fun that is manufacturing.
Timothy Fowers for all the great advice and guidance on making board games, creating a Kickstarter, and building a community.
Risks and challenges
This is our first game. That is by far the biggest risk factor, but we have tried to do everything we could to decrease any risks as much as possible.
To start, we partnered with Hidden Path Entertainment, the makers of the Defense Grid video games. This allowed us to build on an existing franchise and set of mechanics that have already been proven to be fun and challenging.
Next, since we wanted to include miniatures, we made sure to hire an industry veteran who is experienced at sculpting miniatures that can be reliably and cost effectively produced. We have sent or are sending all the sculptures to a small run manufacturer to prove that they can be manufactured and to produce high quality Masters for use at our final manufacturing.
Finally, we have worked for almost a year now with Panda to do manufacturing cost estimations to ensure that we could produce the game at a price that enables us to actually get it into your hands.
We even pushed out our estimated ship date on the Kickstarter by 3 months so that if anything goes wrong during manufacturing, we have time to correct for those issues and still get you the game on time.
Naturally, there are a bunch of things that could still go wrong, but we pledge to be completely open and transparent during and after the Kickstarter regarding where we are with finishing the game and getting it through manufacturing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
