- WHY NOW ? WHY PHNOM PENH ?
40 years ago, beginning on April 17, 1975, the nation of Cambodia was thrown into a period of darkness that resulted in close to 2 millions deaths, almost 1/4 of its total population. The Cambodian genocide left no Cambodian untouched. Yet despite the loss of so many, millions of others have survived.
Sadly, there exists no standalone monument in Phnom Penh in homage to those who were lost.
It is to honor Those Who Are No Longer Here as well as their loved ones who keep their memory alive that this Memorial project was initiated.
This Memorial belongs to them.
This Memorial belongs to you who make the decision to support it.
This Memorial will belong to the new generations of Cambodians so that they may live and grow in awareness.
With absolute violence and intolerance, the Khmer Rouge tried every measure possible to eradicate the identity, the culture, the consciouness, and the mind of the Khmer people. Every step we take together towards healing and finding reconciliation with Cambodia's painful history is a victory over inhumanity.
This Memorial entitled For Those Who Are No Longer Here extends the work and commitment of the French-Cambodia artist Séra respecting the memory of the Cambodian genocide and its impossible representation.
The intention of the artist is to offer to the city of Phnom Penh and its inhabitants a monumental 'place of remembrance'.
In its ensemble, this Memorial will lend itself as a poignant and necessary reminder of this tragedy as a gathering place in honor of those who perished under the unbearable weight of terror.

Risks and challenges
The most difficult aspects of this project relate to the complex building authorization processes which lie on both municipal and national levels. As well, the renovation/construction of the new Chroy Changvar bridge presents a specific challenge in precisely defining the architectural square-meter framework of the Memorial place. However, we are already resolving potential issues through close cooperation with a Technical Working Group that has been established within the municipality's Urban Development office.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
