So what are we building? What is our product? It's difficult for us to pigeon hole Context into one nicely packaged box because Context is an evolving idea. What we are presenting today is only the first step in hopefully many more to come. We offer the means to liven up your home with the Lotus or the N.T.S. lines. We can turn your typical office space into something truly unique with Vipera and Laboro. We don't limit ourselves to the macro realms either.
As you can see in our reward images at the bottom of this page, we have invested time to develop lines and graphics that are inspired by our larger macro lines as well. We know not everyone has the space to have a full scale Context line but we all have the space for micro::context. You are rewarded with a micro::context line for your support of our MACRO::context project. Thanks a "macro"!
We feel like we are truly on to something here. The desire to bring high design to the masses has always been our mantra. Sure we can sell our ideas and let the few companies with deep pockets fill their lobbies with our work, but Context from the very beginning was always about availability to everyone. Our systems are modular, so you can install Vipera behind your couch, or in your private art gallery. Clad your building with Lotus, or hang a single Voxel panel in your entry way. The idea works with any scenario. We are limited only by our imagination and our ability to produce this at a low cost. That is why we come to you! We need the means to bring our products to the masses; to develop, test, prototype all in-house. This is our opportunity to open a dialogue with the community.
That dialogue starts here on Kickstarter. Currently this is our process; We design products that we think are cool and would be proud to have our names attached to. We take our design prototypes and send them out for fabrication. We are constrained heavily by the schedules of our fabricators. It's incredibly time consuming sending, waiting, and then reviewing what was created in our absence, only to modify and resend and start the whole process again until it's right. This adds heavily to our cost, which in turn makes offering affordable prices impossible.
With your help, we want to create everything ourselves in order to breathe life into our products. There is no need to worry about the quality of our products when we produce them.
Who are/is Context? (we're not sure of the grammar)
We are comprised of Architects, Fabricators, and Industrial Designers. Our ability to see through the eyes of multiple disciplines has helped us to remain critical of ourselves as we continue to produce. Using an iterative process and through lots of experimentation and years of experience we have created many interesting and intriguing lines:
We at Context have sought to produce an activator of space. A response to a lack of well designed solutions to typical problems within the field of construction, architecture and design. How can we alter lackluster environments, delivering unique designs quickly and on a reasonable budget? How can we add value without all the typical time consuming processes that come with building? Context is our constantly evolving response to these questions.
From wall/ceiling mounted systems with shelving and display boards schemes, to partitions and drastic spatial altering configurations, we continue to push our applications.
On all scales from the "micro" to the macro, from the decorative to the fully functional, we remain vigilant to our progress and application of our abilities. We refuse to settle for anything but great design that we ourselves would be proud to have our name associated with.
What are Our Goals?
1. We need to generate enough funds to produce the full Context line which include: Lotus, Vipera, N.T.S., Voxel, Ink&Skin, Synthesis and Ossa. To do this we need to purchase a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine and begin production of these lines. The CNC would allow us to create, prototype and produce all of our own designs without the need of a middleman. The cost savings are obvious.
2. We also need to be able to generate enough funding to purchase/lease a space in which to fabricate our designs. The machines needed are quite large, so a bigger space than what we currently have is required.
3. As a stretch goal, we would also like to generate enough funds to purchase a larger laser cutter. Our current 24" x 16" Laser cutter has been great for small scales but a large version would allow for greater exploration.
What is the New Process?
1.We continue to design in-house.
2.Testing, iterations and products are all made in-house.
3.Because everything is made in-house, we can continue to experiment and develop new awesome designs at way lower costs.
4. Lower costs = lower retail price = further reaching product and very happy customers.
5. Context Families will be fed properly, which we are obviously excited about.
6. And of course we, with your help, are able to save the world from bad design!
What is the Future of Context?
If we can meet our goals, we can move Context forward. Context can become a company that is allowed to continue to create awesome, thoughtful work. We refuse to stop here, we have an inherent desire to constantly create and evolve. Context has never been just a product, but rather, a conversation with the world and our environment. The future will see us continue to push ourselves, our designs, our critiques, and our application. All because of you and your funding! Thank you!
See our already built and developed lines below:
A reptilian inspired skin that changes and manipulates the current feel of the space. Each Vipera Panel is meant to be easily removed and replaced at a fraction of the system cost. These panels work with many of our existing lines to allow the user to change the feel of the space as the seasons change.
Vipera is designed to adapt, evolve and highlight the use of the space. Restaurants, resorts, custom mechanic shops, bedrooms, night clubs and anything in between can utilize the same basic Vipera design scheme and tailor its specific look for its specific use.
When a tenant grows and moves on to greener pastures, Vipera is designed to move as well. Because Vipera attaches to the existing structure it can therefor be easily reassembled anywhere. Drama is alive and well with Vipera. We've been able to take some of the most boring spaces in our area and convert them to spaces worth hosting hipster birthday parties.
Vipera changes and adapts. We've designed it to utilize virtually any material you can imagine. With the use of our CNC we will be able to produce all of these products in house. The promise of quality control like no other is our goal, we need you to help us get there.
Voxel [vok's ul]
An intricate design brought about by physical perforations on flat 3/4" pre-finished plywood veneer panels. Voxel produces an intriguing way of displaying graphics based on proximity to the panel. Varying densities and diameters of apertures generate shading gradients, leading to cohesive images.
If the old saying is "a picture says a thousand words" we've translated those words into small circles and then perforated the nonsense out of our high quality ply veneer to give any space a more dramatic feel. Even if you are not one for drama, the beauty of the "Voxel" line is that these things look killer even on the small scale. Grab one for Grams.
Changing space, changing emotion. They are ridiculously easy to change out. There is no need to spend the insane amount of money to change the feel. Just switch out the panel. Buy three and change during an event. It is that easy.
The genesis of the context line. This is where it all began. It is here at the heart of Context that our story begins.
We had a problem, they needed a partition, a general face lift, new flooring, paint and all in a very small budget. Enter Context, Enter you! This is a real world install, we've done this... we know how it goes up and how it goes in. We just need you to support our effort to transform boring spaces into Context spaces.
We'd like to think this is a new idea... but to be frank (or Jim), it's been around at least since the 60's... ok fine it is a brand new product from a brand new Context... there, we said it.
N.T.S. [not to scale]
Lotus received such a huge response as an exterior panel system that we began to develop a new product utilizing lightweight materials that would resist the elements. N.T.S. was specifically developed to change the look and feel of the existing exterior facade without the need to demolish the existing functional waterproofing saving time and money.
N.T.S. uses the same fabrication techniques and standard sizes as all other Context lines and was developed with the same Context ideas in mind. Whatever the configuration it must be interchangeable and it must be easily replaced.
We've recently been looking for materials similar to "alucobond" that would allow us to score the face of the material without sacrificing its structural integrity. Without an in-house CNC machine these studies have been few and far between. We were however successful in achieving the desired permanent etched graphics, as you can see from the pictures above and below.
Below is a formal layout study:
While Lotus was the genesis of the Context brand, Ossa was the genesis of the fabrication scheme. Using existing structure Ossa was the proof that there is no need to remove walls in order to change space. There is also no reason to create a product that does so much damage to the space that a clean removal will cost more than the install.
An investigation of form, challenging the use of architectural components through an exploration of digital fabrication. Ossa works as a unique display board whose graphics and length can be customized to suit any space. The metal board allows magnets to be utilized as means of displaying sketches, presentations or a changing restaurant menu.
What is next for Context?
Because our system is modular there really is no limit to what can be achieved. Ethos is and exploration of what we would like to see happen in the future, of what we believe Context can become. Ethos is an ever changing idea and as technology increases it is the commitment of Context to continue to keep Ethos in mind and constantly push Context forward.
Risks and challenges
There are minimal challenges with the actual fabrication and quality control of the systems themselves. Our fabrication and packaging for shipment is all done locally and by our in house staff. This allows us the highest quality control possible. In the event that the cost of shipping our large items do not make sense, challenges in quality control will arise. Because all of our systems are created using computer programs and then sent to computer controlled machines the accuracy and potential for quality fluctuation are very minimal.
The only items purchased outside of our facilities here in Southern California are hardware. While nation wide and global shipment is not new to our hardware suppliers there may be a time when circumstances would not allow us to utilize our primary wholesaler for these hardware parts. In this case we have an installation scheme that would allow us to temporarily install these panels onsite using materials and hardware commonly found at your local hardware store.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
