UPDATE: The Kickstarter has been fully funded in the first 24 hours, but I'm increasing the print run, so you can still pre-order books through the end of the Kickstarter campaign. Thanks to everyone so far!

This is a very simple project: I’ve designed a book of some of the best @SEMI_RAD illustrations from 2016 to 2019, and you can pre-buy a copy of the book. If enough people pre-order books, a single print run of 1,000 will be published this spring. The books are $15 each (including shipping to U.S. addresses), or $17 each for signed copies (including shipping to U.S. addresses). Your pledge to this Kickstarter campaign funds the layout, publishing, and printing of the book. And if we meet the Kickstarter goal, you’ll receive a book (or books, depending on how many you order). (NOTE: EU, Canada, and Australia shipping options are available—you'll see them when you do your pledge)

This book, a full-color, 5-inch by 5-inch hardcover, will be the realization of two and a half years of doodling, goofing around, and a slight improvement in aesthetics—and it started like a lot of fun things do: with a drawing on a napkin.

In March 2014, I walked into the Utopia Diner in Manhattan with my friend Syd. The manager asked if we’d like to sit at a booth or a table, and Syd and I both said “booth.” As we walked to our table, I asked Syd, “How many people do you think prefer tables to booths?” Almost before I finished my question, Syd confidently said “Zero.” We both laughed.

We sat down at the booth and I pulled out a napkin to draw a pie chart, which I titled “Booth vs. Table Preference of Americans, According to Syd Jones." And then I took a photo and posted it to my Instagram.

A few dozen people liked the chart on Instagram, a couple people commented, and I had found a new way to make jokes. Over the next few months, I drew the occasional chart on graph-lined Field Notes notebooks, using a set of colored pens. I was having fun, and more importantly, other people were enjoying the charts.

In December 2016, I bought an iPad, in hopes of making the charts look a little bit more professional, or at least a little more legible. I decided I would create three drawings per week and post them on Instagram and see what happened.

After two and a half years, I’m putting the best 104 of those drawings into a book, so you can view them somewhere other than a phone screen, leave them on your coffee table for guests to flip through, or gift them to a friend. The book is called Chart Imitates Life, and it’s designed and ready to go to the printer. I’d love for you to be a part of making the first print run happen with a pre-order pledge.

Risks and challenges

The only risk here is not meeting the funding goal—and, if it goes really well, some fatigue/minor repetitive use injuries packing and shipping all the books from our home office in Denver this summer.
