About this project
Congratulations! YOU did it!
You provided SKARA the funds needed to get our project fully released. We can't be more excited and thankful.
Every dollar you gave us allows us to continue developing our game over the next months, building new arena environments, working out the bugs and of course continually perfecting the combat system. Our vision will now become a reality and it's all thanks to YOU!
From the entire SKARA team, THANK YOU!
You can access our rewards and the exclusive Skara´s alpha testing on Steam via Paypal.
As a multiplayer online versus (MOV) game, Skara is the first of its kind.
To create Skara, we combined our favorite elements of games—the feel of versus fighting, the thrill of multiplayer battle, the depth of an RPG with the frenzied rush of an action game.
We have held onto our original vision and we are close to finishing it. Skara, which passed Steam Greenlight in only 8 days, will be released on Steam Early Access in July 2014, only for backers. The game will be open for everybody in September, after testing and balancing the game with our community.
Skara's development is well advanced but there is a lot of work still to be done, such as animations, mechanics, extra races, more arenas, combined team actions and balancing of the characters so we can provide the perfect gaming experience that players are looking for. And to make it to the finish line and beyond, we need your help!
As a gamer-founded company, we value our creative freedom. Your support will ensure that we can deliver the game we envision without first having to change anything to satisfy an AAA publisher’s profit margin, like offering characters with Christmas hats on. With your input, feedback and support we can continue to develop a game that truly puts you into the world of Skara.
That’s why, amongst other awesome rewards, we are giving you the chance to be part of our Steam Early Access in July, shortly after this Kickstarter campaign ends. And we are already working with our Xbox One developer kit to bring Skara to the next generation of consoles.
Just because a game is free doesn’t mean it has to sacrifice quality. We have cut no corners in graphics or design. Skara will be one of the first videogames released with Unreal 4, and we are dying to show you how wonderful this engine is, even when working with a small team.
Skara is about skill, timing, accuracy and practice. As in a Versus, knowing your combos and the best moment to use them is crucial to survival in our arenas. Dodge, counter-attack and execute your enemies with spectacular fatalities.
Update#6: Combat System
But watch your back, you could be surrounded by enemies. Band with your friends and capture strategic places to conquer the arenas and defeat the rival factions. The best players will be honored as Heroes of Skara,
5 races: Choose one of Skara’s “races”each with their unique weapons and fighting style. Choose how your character looks, from their armor to their fighting style.
Game modes: There’s not always time to play for hours on end. Players can open Skara for a five minute skirmish or several hour long faction battles. Game Modes will include Free-for-all, Team Deatchmatch, Siege, Kill the King, Dominion or Capture the flag.
Arenas: Skara is comprised of arenas, which players enter into to fight. Certain game modes allow for factions to fight to dominate arenas as territory. This will be charted on our interactive map.
Update#3: The Lava Coliseum
Update#7: Zem Moorlands
Fatalities: Customizes the way enemies are dispatched with spectacular fatalities.
Speaking of factions, what are they? Ruling Skara requires teamwork. Band together with players from a similar “race” and fight with other groups to dominate the map.
Members of the same faction can perform special combined attacks called Team Actions. Well coordinated teams will have more chances to win a battle than a bunch of uncoordinated fighters.
This is the map of Skara. Create a faction and search for glory with your friends. Choose a point in the map and establish your territory. Expand it with your victories.
The Skara map shows the progress of all the factions in real-time. The best players and factions will be immortalized as heroes by our writer Jackson Adams, and their stories will be remembered by everyone.
After establishing the history of Skara, we leave it to the players to determine Skara’s future. Will the Khärn tribes conquer all the land? Will the Durno return to their magnificence? Will the Shinse return to their ancestral lands? The future is in players’ hands…
So, if Skara is going to be free-to-play, why should you back this project?
Skara will be free when it's finished, hopefully by the end of 2014. But today we are offering to backers the opportunity to test Skara at the alpha stage, way before anyone else. Besides, you will get all your money back in virtual currency to spend inside of the game, so effectively, you are not paying to play Skara.
We believe that the more people playing Skara, the better game it will become, and going free is the only way to get players helping us to make Skara better, whether they spend money or not.
Because Skara will always be a free-to-win. We will sell only cosmetic items, such as fancy armors, character skins or even fatalities- we hope some players will like to pay for spectacular ways to kill their enemies. But everyone will be able to access the whole content of the game with virtual currency that you can earn fighting in our arenas.
We promise to cut no corners in development, providing the most beautiful graphics and the most exciting gameplay, while being steadfastly committed to staying free-to-win.
No matter how deep pocketed you are, you can't pay to win in Skara.
When the development team got started on Skara, we knew that it would be a much better game if we channeled the energy of an entire community instead of merely relying on our own small team for everything.
For example, our small community focused on factions early on. They took what was a basic idea about team battles and proposed allowing players to develop their own unique faction history. That history would define what particular factions want--all of it up to the players themselves, including what characters look like and even who will lead them and how. Skara is already a much better game because of its community, and we know that our Kickstarter is a great chance to continue this tradition.
What are we going to do to deliver on that commitment?
Kickstarter backers will be starting a lifelong relationship with Skara. We will always take that relationship seriously.
For one thing, backers will have early access to the game, with the chance of submitting their feedback. backers will get a chance to engage Skara’s history and shape it for other players.
Community focus: We want to deliver the product our customers want. Have an idea? We actively listen. Some of our best ideas came from fans and will continue to. As the game takes off, players will be able to fill in the blank spaces on Skara’s map, determining the future of the game for everybody.
Skara was once a land inhabited by three main cultures--the Tamvaasa to the North, the Shinse along the Eastern coastal lands and the Durno, who claimed most of Skara within their imperial borders. This all changed when Skara’s sun, Celem, absorbed Lôm, a nearby planet, unleashing untold amounts of chaos, death and destruction.
The catastrophe set off by Lôm created a chain of events that would forever change Skara. It brought invaders from the burning lands in the South, the Celea, who promptly conquered the coast, exiling the Shinse inland to lake Nagaco, on the far side of the mountains. Earthquakes swallowed entire towns and villages, upsetting the Durno’s domination of central Skara, bringing them back on a level with their ancient enemies, the Tamvaasa, whose land is steadily growing colder. The disaster also brought a fearsome new race out from cracks in the mountains: the Khärn.
Update#2: The Story of Skara
Skara is developed by a group of talented and experienced developers who quit their jobs in other companies to create their own game. The team behind Skara has dozens of years of experience working for other companies such as Ubisoft, Eurocom, Ankama, Freedom Factory and Tequila Works, among others.
As many as three former students from CEO’s videogame classes decided to join Skara, creating a young, well-oiled machine with a solid idea and a wonderful engine to create it.
Update#1: The Journey
Important Note.- The team behind Skara is committed to implementing these features no matter how much money we raise. The game we are picturing includes them, and we'll use the revenues from Skara to make the game grow organically. If we hit the stretch goals we'll hire extra programmers and artists to make it more quickly...
Risks and challenges
Since our game is well advanced, our risk is relatively small. We could get struck by lightning or get lost in the hypnotic swirl of a black hole...but setting aside natural disasters, we are firmly committed to this project and have left big jobs to complete it. So we will not let anything to stop us from releasing Skara!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
