LOOT & XP: The Game Hub of Norman, Inc.
With board game cafés opening up all over the country, it’s about time for Oklahoma to have one too. This will be Oklahoma’s first board game café, and we’re excited to share our delicious food and our vast collection of games with Norman!
What is Loot & XP?
Loot & XP (LXP) is Justin, Jack, Matt, Morgan, and Rachelle, all of us with several years of experience with a variety of games. We’ve hosted a number of gaming events in Norman, and plan to do several more on the way to our store opening this fall. Portions of our Kickstarter video were filmed at the Norman Public Library during one of our gaming events there, showing the type of community we’ve already started to foster: friendly, inviting, and full of games. The funding we’re seeking will help us create a warm and comfortable atmosphere for friends and family alike.
Once the store opens, we will host a wide range of activities and services for everyone. As a board game café, it’s the union of two different passions: playing games and enjoying good food and drink with friends and family.
You’ll be able to find over 200 games for sale on opening day, with over 400 by next year. You'll have access to one of the largest game libraries in Oklahoma with well over 300 games available to play and more added each month! We'll have plenty of events at our store, such as family game nights, movie and game events, and game tutorials to list a few.
At LXP, you'll be able to participate in weekly tournaments with a revolving line up featuring games such as Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Game of Thrones. And of course top players will win prizes at each of our tournaments.
Of course we'll have more than just games! You can choose from a wide selection of food and beverages while just hanging out with friends. Sandwiches and pastry from a local bakery will be available along with traditional snacks and candy as well as a wide variety of coffee, tea, soft drinks and beers. So you can come enjoy food, drinks and friends in one place all while enjoying your favorite game!
What makes LXP different?
We don’t want to be just another board game store, and having a café with food and drinks is a good start. We aim to provide a comfortable place for anyone to come and enjoy games when you purchase one of our game passes.
Our game passes allow you to play as many games as you want all day long for only $5. This nominal fee allows us to build our game library and keep a roof over our heads while we provide the best place to enjoy games in the state. It’s also a great way to try out different games before you buy them!
You won’t just be able to play games in LXP, the store itself will serve as a game for our members to play! Here’s how it works:
Copper will be our free basic membership, which gets you your own ‘Character Sheet.’ As you get game passes and participate in our events and tournaments you’ll earn Experience Points (XP). When you reach a certain amount of XP, you’ll level up, earning different rewards such as free game passes, discounts on purchases, and free drinks.
Silver includes the Character Sheet and gets you a bonus on earning XP. You’ll also get to roll a die for a chance to get discounts on purchases, as well as once per week you’ll get the chance to discount your game pass anywhere from $1 to $4, and reserve table space with us up to a month in advance. Finally, you’ll also earn Loot Stamps from all your game and refreshment purchases, and for every 10 Loot Stamps you earn you can choose to cash them in or bank them. When you reach 50 Loot Stamps you can challenge one of us for “The Showdown!” You pick which game, we pick who will play. You'll get a chance to automatically upgrade to Gold Membership and even if you lose, you'll still get $40 in store credit, so it’s win-win for you!
Gold Memberships offer all the benefits Silver Memberships have and more! You’ll get a higher bonus from earned XP and a higher chance at a discount on your purchases, which stacks with the Silver discount! Like Silver, you can discount your game pass once a week, but this time the discount amount could make your game pass free! You’ll also be able to reserve any game up to a month in advance. All tournaments will be a flat $5 fee regardless of their cost, and as long as you participate in one tournament or event a month, you’ll get two free refreshments each month. You can still do "The Showdown" at 50 Loot Stamps for $50 in store credit, or a chance at $75 in store credit.
Exclusive to this Kickstarter only, we have Platinum Memberships available. At a one-time pledge amount, you will never pay any monthly or yearly membership costs. You’ll get all the benefits of Gold Membership, but on top of that, you’re guaranteed to never pay for a game pass, and you’ll get an increased bonus to earned XP.
There are several options when it comes to choosing your perk on top of becoming a Platinum Member. One perk is that you’ll be able to name one of our tables at the store! Another is being able to host your own private party at LXP. And if you just want more games, we have that perk available too!
We want to give you even more benefits when you participate in LXP’s events and tournaments! Every time you sign up for an LXP event or play in a tournament, you’ll earn points on LXP's Leaderboard. The higher you place in the tournament, the more points you earn. At the end of the month the top three people will get prizes such as store credit for purchases, free game passes, or even a free upgrade to their membership.
At the end of the year, the top three customers with the most points will get store credit, and earn a free upgrade to the next level of their membership. Also, the person with the most points will earn a place on LXP’s Hall of Gamers plaque.
Where are we now, and where are we going?
We’ve been getting the store prepped for launch for over a year, starting with our first tournament hosted in the Norman Public Library in 2013. As of now, we’ve incorporated our business and developed a formal business plan with help from the SBA, SCORE, and the city of Norman. We’re awaiting responses for our loan requests, and in the meantime have put our own funds into the business. We have distributors in line for ordering products, and scouted several locations in Norman. Once we have our loans, we’ll choose which location to go with and it’s full speed ahead to get the store open by fall.
We are working with local game companies and developers, such as Denexa Games and John Trobare, to host their product at our store, and are looking for even more to work with!
Kickstarter lets us become more directly engaged with you, and allows you the opportunity to get exclusives only available here. Anyone who backs our project will also be invited to our backer only party at our store before we officially open to the public. These Kickstarter funds will go towards furnishing the store with quality tables and comfortable chairs for our gaming and café areas. Any amount over the original goal will go towards increasing the game library and the overall quality of the store. We are also considering what stretch goals we’ll add, pending how quickly we reach our funding goal.
Risks and challenges
We are entering a market that already has a few game stores in the greater metro area, and this sort of business is still a fairly new one. We are still pending our loan requests to get a firm date on when we are opening our store. However based on our research on other board game cafés in different cities, most have flourished and some even opened multiple locations within their respective cities. We’ve researched how those businesses succeeded and plan on building on their successes. We’re getting involved in the community, and we’re excited to start this opportunity with all of you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
