This 365-second animation is a sequence of 8,760 pictures hand-drawn by the director over the course of 365 days.
New "STRETCH GOAL" of $20,000!
PLEASE KEEP PLEDGING!!! $17,870 was the bare minimum we needed to complete the film! Help us reach our stretch goal for P&A (prints and advertising) for the theatrical release along with a retrospective of Mirai Mizue that we are planning this summer. Thank you!
Not a Story to Tell but Emotions to Feel
The abstract animated film director Mirai Mizue has conceived of the WONDER 365 Animation Project in which he creates a one-second animation (24 frames of drawings) each day, uploading it to the web for 365 consecutive days, from April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013. The last frame created on each previous day becomes the starting point for the following day. When the 365 days have passed, the film WONDER is complete.
Eschewing the traditional practice of planning a project with storyboards and scenarios, Mizue relies instead on his intuition while performing this marathon of drawing. His ceaseless activity and spontaneous approach together produce a uniquely emotional story.
Since this project is best expressed through images, please watch the trailer of WONDER here!
A total of 8,760 drawings are required to complete the WONDER 365 Animation Project, which means producing 24 drawings per day, or at least one every hour. Even this truly independent artist, who completes all his work by himself, needed to ask for some help this time around. After hiring a rough total of 160 painters to assist him for a few days per month, he was able to complete the project as planned on the 31st of March.
This project, which has been Mirai Mizue’s most ambitious one yet, is nearing completion. However, the budget keeps rising and to cover the costs of the composing and recording of an original soundtrack, the editing and, finally, the making of a 35mm print, we must ask for your support.
WHY KICKSTARTER? WHY NOT!
Financing independent films, especially abstract animations, has become increasingly hard because they are not seen as lucrative. Mirai Mizue, who has managed to produce his own animations and present them to the world, believes that there is a global audience for abstract animation, including many that are ready to discover it for the first time. WONDER will be the culmination of 13 years of making animation and Mirai Mizue is confident that it will be unlike anything anyone has ever seen.
We are happy to make our debut on Kickstarter and meet and communicate with new friends in this open space where many independent artists are finding their support and their new fans.
Our initial goal is for a premiere screening at an international film festival. Our first aim is the Cannes Film Festival in France and we hope to complete the project by the end of April, in time for Cannes in May!
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR | MIRAI MIZUE
Mizue’s works have been screened and judged at many international film festivals and he continues to forge the future of the Japanese independent animation scene. Since 2002, he has been creating abstract animations, known as his 'cell animations', in which cell structures form the central motif.
In 2011, Modern No.2 was nominated to the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival and to the Spectrum section at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, enthralling audiences with its vivid colors and dynamic, delicate movements synchronized with music. In 2012, Modern No.2 won the SACEM Award for Original Music Prize at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, the world’s biggest animation festival. With his vast experience and boundless energy, Mizue is in his prime as a filmmaker. After a full year of production, Mizue’s most challenging work, WONDER, is sure to breathe new life into the short animation scene.

THE GOAL | HOW YOUR MONEY WILL HELP
Our goal is to raise $17,870, which is the bare minimum required to complete the editing and produce the soundtrack.
☺ This will enable the talented music group, Pascals, to focus solely on this project for 4 weeks, composing and recording an original score with acoustic instruments at a professional studio
☺ This will allow us to make a 35mm print and a DCP
☺ This will help offset the current production costs
☺ This will help to cover the festival submission fees
We believe that the combination of Mirai Mizue’s hand-drawn images with Pascals’s acoustic music is a wonderful match and will create a mesmerizing animation!
ABOUT THE MUSIC | PASCALS
Pascals, led by Rocket Matsu, is an acoustic orchestral group comprised of 14 musicians playing both real and toy instruments such as pianica, violin, accordion, toy piano, guitar, ukulele, banjo, electric cello, cello, saw, trumpet, percussion, and drums. Their unique sound is both upbeat and humorous and their light-hearted approach lifts the spirits of their audiences. The French music press has given them rave reviews, citing their 'delicate sense of melody' and 'adventurous and playful' sound. They favor improvisation over rote technique and play with a genre-defying liberal style, aspiring towards a neutral and open music while retaining a Japanese sensibility.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Producing independent abstract animated films is difficult but it’s especially so in Japan. Needless to say, the WONDER 365 Animation Project is the biggest challenge yet for Mirai Mizue in his 13-year career as a creator of animated film. He was fortunate to receive a grant from the Agency for Cultural Affairs in Japan but we are left seeking additional funds from overseas in order to complete this ambitious, year-long project.
As the technology of digital filmmaking progresses, the analog approach of drawing images by hand, recording acoustic music and printing on 35mm film sounds like a risky endeavor. Our team for the WONDER 365 Animation Project consists of just three people including the director. But we strongly believe that the investment of our time along with the financial help from our supporters will bring a rich surprise to the world of animation!
THANK YOU for your support, from the bottom of our hearts!
