About

 What's the project?

A Voyage To Arcturus is a Stage Musical based on the classic Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel by David Lindsay. This is a comic adventure. Philosophical and surreal, dangerous and mind-boggling; with a score that spans rock and jazz idioms and other more eccentric forms. There has never been a show quite like this - a serious science-fiction musical.

What's it about?

It's about a young man searching for the meaning of life ... on an alien planet.

Maskull, like all of us, wants to understand. You know, the big questions – What's it all for? Why are we here? What happens when we die? To find answers he must travel to the planet of Tormance, in the binary star-system of Arcturus.

But the lessons will not be easy. In fact he will almost die twice before he reaches his final destination, and meet a lot of very strange people along the way.  His absent guide on this journey is Krag, who seems to be the devil incarnate, and who abandons Maskull on this desolate and bizarre planet to fend for himself.

He is not completely alone, though. Seraphina is with him every step of the way, challenging Krag and guiding our hero on his quest – even if he doesn't realize it. It's the adventure of a lifetime.

A Voyage To Arcturus deals with big philosophical issues, something good Sci-Fi has always done well.

What exactly do I want the money for?

I am seeking funds to stage the world premiere production of the show at a local theatre - The Peninsula Theatre, Woy Woy. This will be a a 'Proof of Concept' production. Not quite a full show, but more than a Workshop. It will make extensive use of Projection Mapping, and have unique costume, wigs and masks.

Performance dates will final weekend of September and First weekend of October 2019.

And we're going to film it!

The entire thing will be professionally filmed with multiple cameras. We've done this before, notably with the podcast series The Litmus Test.

The point of this is so I can pitch the show to potential producers anywhere in the world; by posting the video online for anyone with the link to view. Clips from the show will be posted publicly for promotional purposes, but the whole show will initially only be made available to serious producers - and our more generous Kickstarter supporters.

It is hoped of course that this production will lead to a more fulsome staging with a bigger budget. But for now, the intent is to get it on its legs and get it seen.

Where's the money going?

This production will be on a Pro-Am basis. So most of the money we raise will be going to theatre costs, as well as material costs for set, costume, props etc.  Also costs involved in filming the production. And to help pay our cast and crew something for their work.

In the event we raise more that the requested $60k, the additional funds will be used to pay  myself (Phil Moore) something. Beyond that, any additional funds will be used to help promote the show to producers around the world through competitions, travel expenses, and anything else I can do toward getting Arcturus seen by as many people as possible. Including possibly transporting the production for a season in Sydney or elsewhere.

So who the f* are you?

I am a Writer, Composer, Director and Actor, and I will be wearing all of those hats on this production. I began in musical theatre in my youth, but for the past several years have been focussed on film work. 'Arcturus' is the fourth Musical I have written, but aside from a few readings and workshops none have received full productions to date.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge in staging this show is finding the right collaborators. We're halfway there. We have most of our cast, and they're awesome! For the filming I have a very experienced DOP on board with all the necessary gear. We have worked together many times. Our choreographer is the one of the country's leading exponents of latin dance and salsa. Most other crew roles have also been filled with experienced locals.

For those who may be concerned about me wearing so many hats, be reassured I have been doing all of these various roles separately for decades - either on my own projects or for others. This production simply brings them all together. And I won't be totally alone of course. Theatre is a collaborative art form.
