About this project
Help Make a Definitive Update of the Ultimate, Unauthorized Madonna Fan Book a Reality!
From the author, Matthew Rettenmund:
THE ORIGINAL BOOK
Back in 1995, the esteemed editor Thomas Dunne at St. Martin’s Press published my first book, a humorous, irreverently reverent, exhaustive, unofficial A-to-Z on the life and career of Madonna called Encyclopedia Madonnica.
As a fan of Madonna and as the owner of a massive archive of magazines, clippings and “Madonnabilia,” I felt compelled to document the incredible phenomenon of the girl from Bay City who in her first 13 years on the pop scene had become one of the greatest music icons (and one of the most controversial public figures) of all time.
The book was a big hit—it sold well for over a decade, was published in Japan and led to quite a few TV appearances for me as a Madonna expert.
Over the years, I’ve received so many notes from readers asking for an update that I finally decided it was time for a complete overhaul…and I want to publish it on my own terms—by a fan, for fans—on the 20th anniversary of the first book’s publication.
THE NEW BOOK
The original Encyclopedia Madonnica was a paperback of about 200 black-and-white pages, with a color insert.
In keeping with Kickstarter’s motto of underpromising and overdelivering, I can promise that the update will be at least 200 pages, black-and-white, heavily illustrated and will contain some amazing, never-before-published photos of Madonna.
Depending on how much money I raise, my personal goal is to make the book quite a bit longer, in full color and to create a 500-copy initial run for collectors with a unique cover and some special content, as well as at least another 500 copies beyond that. Money permitting, I would like to offer the book not only to my generous Kickstarter donors (you get a physical copy of the book starting at the $45 donation level), but would also like to make it available via traditional outlets, like Amazon.
I have an enormous wealth of information to add to an updated edition and countless unseen photos.
When I wrote the first Encyclopedia Madonnica, I was just a fanboy writing in my room. This time around, I have more credibility, so I believe I will be able to secure original interviews with many of the players in the Madonna story.
With your generous donations, I plan to create a sequel that will not only live up to the high expectations created by the first book, but will surpass it in scope, humor, imagery and design.
WHO AM I?
I have been in publishing and media since 1987, when I went to work for trail-blazing female literary agent Jane Jordan Browne in Chicago. I continued my book-publishing experience when I moved to New York, working in editorial for St. Martin’s Press. It was at this time that I published Encyclopedia Madonnica, followed by my first novel, Boy Culture.
I worked at Reuters, in adult-magazine publishing, did celebrity ghost-writing, and published several more books, including the first ‘80s nostalgia book (Totally Awesome ‘80s) and the novel Blind Items: A (Love) Story.
In 1998, I created and founded a popular teen-entertainment magazine called Popstar!, which kept me busy 24/7 for 14 years. During this time, I became the first editor to cover Zac Efron, the Jonas Brothers, and Hilary Duff, among many others. I also learned a lot about the expenses and considerations involved in publishing.
From 2013 until this spring, I worked in TV for Anderson Cooper and then Bethenny Frankel in Web production.
Perhaps the creation I'm most associated with currently is the gay-culture blog, Boy Culture. (My 100 favorite posts here.)
There is no aspect of media in which I have not worked, so I am uniquely qualified to be entrusted with a budget to produce a quality book.
WHY I NEED WHAT I NEED + THE REWARDS
Traditional book publishers have huge discounts on printing, print overseas and have discretionary budgets in which to bury losses. Printing this book on my own terms will be expensive, as will securing the right to publish photos, not to mention the time investment of about six months.
I realize that people want value for their dollar, so I promise a terrific book that any fan would enjoy immensely.
To help make your contributions all the easier, I have dug deeply into my archive and am offering a wealth of unique Madonnabilia, including original Polaroids, special prints and jewelry actually worn by Madonna!
WHAT IF I RAISE MORE THAN $22,500?
Keep checking back. As rewards vanish, I may be able to offer more and more.
As I wrote earlier, I am in this to create a truly special book, and the more money I receive the more I’ll be able to spend toward that goal. If I can blow past my minimum goal, I will be in a better position to make the book full-color, and I’ll be able to afford more illustrations.
HOW ELSE YOU CAN HELP
If this Kickstarter is successful, I would value your input on entries you’d like to see, what was missing from the first book, rare Madonnabilia you have that you think I might not have seen and, of course, original images I might use. I want your participation and feedback, so e-mail me any time at firstname.lastname@example.org, friend me on Facebook @matthewrettenmund and follow me on Twitter @mattrett.
Thank you so much for your time and attention and, if you decide to give, your generous donation. Please give whatever you can afford, and please take the time to share the link to this page far and wide.
Special thanks to Bruce Glikas for the main image of this Kickstarter.
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges are not great here; if you pledge and I fail to make $22,500, you won't be charged. If I do make $22,500, you will be charged...and I will then compile and publish the book and get copies to everyone in 2015.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
