About

Hello, I am Pawel Bodytko and together with my daughter Alexandra (Alex) Bodytko, we created Spheroku™ a mobile game that gives a new dimension to the popular puzzle, Sudoku. (You can try Spheroku free on iOS and Android devices. More info on www.spheroku.com)

While working on Spheroku™, another idea occurred to us: “What if we wrap the chessboard around a 3d cube?” -- Similar to what we did with the sudoku grid, which we wrapped on a 3d sphere.

People have been playing chess in some form or another for about 1,500 years. And, millions find pleasure in the battle of wits associated with the game. Those who rose to the masters level enjoy celebrity status around the world, as well as financial rewards. The popularity of Chess gave rise to thousands of books & articles written in all languages. Not to discount studies, countless of them, conducted on this subject. Having said that, it's almost as if everything that can be thought of about Chess, has already been done.

But, how much of this knowledge would still be relevant, if the structure of a chessboard was changed dramatically, from a flat area to a surface of three dimensional cube? How many of the known strategies for standard 2d chess would survive in this new 3d environment? Would it make an interesting game? Would the game end too quickly, or would it go on forever? Would it be easy to check and mate? Would it end in a large number of draws?

This project intends to find the answers to all these questions, as well as to the more fundamental one: Would people enjoy this “all-around-3d chess” and would they be willing to put their money to see it happen?

 360-Chess description:

  • Each face of the cube will have 4 by 4 fields on the grid . (This will make the total surface area 50% larger than the standard chessboard).
  • This setup will have 4 edges on the cube where the dark and light fields are adjacent to each other. Those edges will become barriers which should not be crossed.
  • Two faces on the opposite sides of the cube will have these barriers, marked with the respective colors that will define home bases for the two opponents.
  • The figure sets will not face each other as in the traditional chess game, but instead they will be positioned sideways to each other.
  • The pawns will be placed on each open side of the home base (4 on each side), and all the other figures will be in the middle.
  • The pawns movements will need to be modified, so that at least initially, they will be able to move sideways, or diagonally in addition to moving forward.
  • The exact modifications will have to be determined experimentally by playing the game.
  • The network game versions will be subscription based.
  • A 2-player stand alone version of the game will also be available. (At the initial release the stand alone version will be programmed for two people playing against each other and sharing a single mobile device or a computer. The option of playing against the computer will come later).
  • All donors will be able to offer suggestions.
  • The initial placement of figures as well as other rules will be finalized by the Founders of the game. (See the details on becoming a Founder in Donations section.)

Kickstarter 360-Chess Project scope:

  • Create website portal to match players among subscribers, exchange ideas and offer game support. The web address reserved for the portal: www.360-chess.com
  • Create network mobile versions (iOS, Android versions for certain. Perhaps also create Windows 8 Phone version, and other mobile platforms.  This is largely dependent on funding).
  • Create web browser version of the game that can be played over the network, as well as locally by two players taking turns.

Estimated development time frame:

  •  6 to 8 months.

Q & A:

 Whose Idea is this?

The idea has occurred to us independently as an extension of the Spheroku™ game development. However, from the beginning, we doubted if it was completely new. This seemed like an idea that someone would have already thought of…

Prior to entering this as a Kickstarter project, we did a patent and web searches on past variations of chess and we did find two similar ideas being explored in the past by other people*. However, those ideas were either completely abstract in nature without any sign of implementation, or they were overly “reality based”, with the intent of building and marketing physical game sets; with the aid of gimbals, magnets, Velcro and so on --- an obvious detour from the simplicity of placing chess figures on a flat surface.

*We did not find any similar ideas that are protected by current patents.

Is playing this kind of chess too complicated?

If we intended to build a physical set, the gravity and mechanical structure would make it very cumbersome.

However, in computer simulation the gravity is not an issue and there are no complicated contraptions necessary to spin a virtual cube around. Taking turns on iPad is just as easy as playing the traditional chess... What's more, with the internet and mobile networks, finding a partner who is not in the same room that may enjoy a similar activity, will be much easier once you have the Online Portal that matches, or connects specific players among the 360-Chess subscribers.

Which development platform are you going to use to create the game?

We plan to develop the game using Unity3d because of its great multi-platform support.

Will you continue developing 360-Chess even if this campaign does not reach the $50,000 project funding goal?

No. Finding out if there’s enough interest in playing this kind of chess game is just as important to us as acquiring the necessary funds for development. Thanks to Kickstarter, an idea can be judged as being good or bad based on potential donors response, and we will respect this collective decision. So, if this is a game you would love to play, please donate and tell your friends about it. Without your donations, 360-Chess will not exist...

Risks and challenges

Pawel Bodytko is a seasoned professional with 27 years of entrepreneurial experience. If the funding is successful, he is confident that the backers will be able to play 360-Chess on their devices within 6-8 months time frame. This is especially true, since this project is in many ways similar to development of mobile game Spheroku™. which you can find in iTunes, Goole Play and Samsung app stores:
