Update #6 - Playable Demo is on!
We just put a playable demo on our web site, go there, play (give it a few moments to load) and then tell us what you think! Demo consists of one level and a boss fight that happenes at the end of every season. Be aware that this is an early build and lot of things will be polished further on. But we are pretty happy how it looks and feels for now : ) Go smash, and come back here to leave comments!
Update #5 - Vote for Your Demon Boss!
We are inviting you to vote for one of the bosses in the game. It has to be a creature from Japanese mythology, and it can either be land or flying creature, no fishes, sorry. To make it easy for you, our friend Matthew Meyer - an artist and author of book The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons has a selection of more than 30 yokais (japanese ghosts and demons) prepared on his blog. You can choose from there, or from many more demons presented in his book - or use any other source if you like.
When you pick the one you like just leave your voice in comments above the video. We will have this voting opened on our Facebook page also, where you as a backer get to vote again, so that's double votes from our supporters.
If you have any questions please leave them in the comments above the video, I will be happy to answer to all.
Playable Demo coming soon! In the mean time take a look at our gameplay video:
Scarecrow Samurai is set in a world where history and mythology are merged together. It encompasses time when food in Japan was hard to obtain, and had to be defended with sword and magic. The time when people, demons and animals took equal part in world affairs. The main character is a mysterious creature, demon-protector by nature, committed to honor the code of both scarecrows and samurais, who puts himself in service of the Kakashi clan.
The game begins in a critical moment when your clan plants first wheat crop on Japanese soil, to establish more variety in food and hence healthier meals for people and animals alike. But mighty Warlord Kobayaghi, hungry for power and determined to rule is afraid that his influence will grow weaker if people become less dependent on one source of food. Under the excuse of keeping traditional ways and refusing foreign influence, he wages a war with one goal - to reach the first wheat crop and destroy it.
Your goal is to stop his army, and protect the crop.
Some of the features in Scarecrow Samurai:
- Play as a scarecrow-samurai demon in this freemium Android and free-to-play browser game. Point and click on enemies or in their vicinity to attack them.
- Each level brings new types of enemies and possibilities for upgrades.
- Different climate conditions follow the change of seasons.
- Night missions
- Ability to summon your sidekick (NPC).
- Special skills/powers
- Boss fights
- Introduction to every level
- Animated cinematics
- Original score
- Art partially done by Aleksa Gajic, one of the best-selling comic authors and illustrators in France and Sebia, main author of the animated feature film Technotise: Edit & I released in 2009.
- Voice-over narrations from professional voice talent Connor Mckinley (@Senile Snake)
Artistically, the world of Scarecrow Samurai is a mixture of realistic and comically stylized design, with the unique mix of cute, comical characters and scary demons in one place. Levels change along with seasons, bringing rain and snow, mist and winds, and ongoing hordes of enemies.
Different variations of enemy deaths and player character's attacks will be accompanied with great variety of custom sounds and animations. Our sound designer Dimitry made sure that each new weapon has different variations of its own authentic sounds - vakizashi, katana and kusari gama - they all do sound very differently.
The game is accompanied with an original soundtrack greatly inspired by traditional Japanese music and instruments. Enjoy listening to one of the tunes from the game while reading on:
Delivery time for most of the rewards is the same as the delivery date of the game. We will be able to deliver some of them earlier, and for some it will require additional time to make them.
Kobayaghi Industries is a small group of people driven by love for games, by personal need to create games and desire to expose others to them, and by professional determination to top each previous game we make with the next one. We all have prolific backgrounds and we had our foot in many different industries, but for the last couple of years we decided to focus all those different skills and aspirations and pour them into one direction. Games became natural grounds to do that. We love to write stories and design characters and worlds for them. We love to build and balance those worlds and we love to animate and to make music. Merging all that together and seeing it all work is fascinating. We love it.
HOW WILL WE USE THE MONEY?
The project needs the Kickstarter funds to expand the core team. So far we invested all of our spare time and money, but It just takes too long for few of us to do it all. There are a lot of talented and professional people around us with whom we worked on many occasions before. Hiring them would allow us to make this game in reasonable time and to add more features that we would love this game to have.
In order to finish this game we need to make (visually, programming and sound wise): more bosses (with complete animated sprites and sound effects of moving, attacking, destroying crops, taking damage, laughing, dying, berserking), new types of enemy units with complete animated sprites and sound effects, new spells/special powers, inbetween level animations and screens, outro, real user interface (the one shown in the video is just a placeholder), voice overs and narration, tense music for boss fights, and more music in general.EXTERNAL LINKS
Risks and challenges
We have a lot of work ahead of us but we don't see any probable setback or challenge beyond our goal - which is to create high quality browser game with smooth animations and professional sounds. We also want to keep controls simple so anyone would be able to play the game. We really hope it will rise to the expectations of our supporters.
We will make this game and many more games in the future. We would love you to be a part of its making. Knowing that people believe in our project and support us is of great personal value to us.
