What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

About

The AR2 robot is an open source robot project where users can build and create their own 6 axis robot.  This robot can currently be 3D printed and build from low cost off the shelf components from vendors such as Amazon, McMaster Carr and Stepperonline. Users can visit the projects Github page  https://github.com/Chris-Annin/AR2 to download all software and full sets of instructions for the robot, the wiring harness, electrical enclosure and the travel track.  Users can download all the 3D print files to print all the components to make the AR2 robot.  This project hopes to bring aluminum parts kits into production so that users have the opportunity to make their own aluminum version of the AR2 robot.

Risks and challenges

Initial prototype production runs have already been made. Prototype robots have been built and tested. There is little risk moving to a full production scenario. Users will need to be somewhat mechanically inclined and able to follow basic assembly instructions and know how to load software onto their computer and onto an Arduino.
The cost for electrical components, bearings and hardware is approx $1180. total cost to build this robot including this aluminum parts kit is $2,375.00 typical desktop 6 axis robots run from $10k to $15k. the smallest size industrial robots start at $30K. This robot is an affordable entry level option.
