“portfolio,” paintings and light pieces are three installations where I investigate color, line and space in an exhibition at Poem 88

Hi – I’m Mehmet Dogu and I’m initiating this Kickstarter to help fund my March 3rd- April 14th 2012 exhibition at Poem 88 gallery in Atlanta, Georgia called “Living Color – Meditations in Three Parts.”

I explore and construct architectural ideas in a variety of ways beyond designing buildings. For this exhibition, I am addressing these ideas through photography, paintings and light installations.

photography

Photography has always been important to architecture to document sites and materials and buildings.  More importantly, it is also a spatial event in and of itself.  The space that photography creates is a medium I have been working as pictures always fascinate me because they not only capture something we think we know, but they create a whole other world that can have their own unique space.

“portfolio” is comprised of photographs  mounted on reclaimed ink-print tests of varied and vivid colors. At Poem 88, these will be displayed for the first time as an installation mounted floor-to-ceiling in 9 panels of 9 pieces each for a total of 81 total portfolio leafs on the wall.

painting

Surface is integral to architecture as the primary viewing event and is what contains space and what hides and reveals.  Surface in building is not static – it changes over time, shows wear and weathering as do my paintings.  Phenomenally, surface can be flat, or dimensional, it can be actual or representational – so how space and line work on a surface is a curious thing to me. Also curious are the numbers; counting, rhythm, logic and mystery that lie both on and behind the surface.

This meditation will be four new paintings about lines, space and color by incorporating an ink wash on reclaimed palette panels of roughly 4’x4’ framed with angle iron.  I will make saw cuts, scorch these lines and apply bright lines of paint into the grooves.

light

Light is another architectural area I’ve regularly explored through constructions called light pieces. Some of these have been inserted into architecture, others are freestanding or hung objects.  Though the installation may be different, each affects and creates new conditions of space.

For Poem 88, I will create two new pieces, one large and centrally located in the space, the other much smaller and tucked in a remote location. These pieces will provide an overall glow and subtly color the gallery when the ambient light is great and transform the space more dramatically as they become beacons in the night.

So here’s what I need your help with:

I’ve been able to do much already, but there’s a lot more to realize these pieces.  I’ve sourced many recycled materials like the portfolio papers, the substrate for the paintings and I may even have some lights – but I’m a long way away from being able to realize this show.

Your donation will allow me to purchase:

- nine backing substrates and plexiglass sheets

- metal frames for the paintings

- materials of light sculptures - wood, fixtures, hardware, fabric and mounts

To cover these costs I need to raise a total of $3300- in the next 30 days – that’s $1100- every ten days.

If you need more information – please see:

and

www.poem88.net

Thanks again and that total amount is $3300-.  We have 30 days to make that amount.  Please also remember that if we don’t raise this amount in the given time, I will get none of the proceeds.  Please donate to this site and not to me directly.

If we exceed $3300-, I will use that money to buy additional tools and materials to create more art.

One more thing. When you contribute, you help more than my efforts to continue my work and to make this exhibition a reality.  You help Poem 88 with the mission of presenting meaningful and inspired art.

Thanks for watching, reading and donating.

Hope to see you somewhere soon in a world of space and color.
